If Guardian Legend, one of my all-time favorite games of any genre, does not qualify (understandable), then ... choices, choices. Tons of choices. Hmm. How about Darius Twin for the SNES? Love the way that one handles. Or R-Type Final, as far as presentation goes. Great game.

I admit that I did not read, and have not read, the Dark Is Rising books. At that point in my life, my interest was Lloyd Alexander. (I skipped Animorphs entirely because I was already too old to be the target audience when those were released.) Shortly after that, though, I got into Weis and Hickman, but I agree: Death Gate above Dragonlance (... and -- unpopular opinion -- . A recent attempt at rereading Dragons of Autumn Twilight was ... less than productive. I kept seeing the die rolls in the writing, if that makes any sense. :-P

This is not to say that I disdain all young adult books (barring Harry Potter, which I enjoy, though I would have written parts of it differently), but most of them are not for me. I used to dip into them to see what my kids were reading, but it still feels weird to have it exist as a category.

I use my Kindle for books I cannot get in other formats. E-books are ... different. They read like fanfic, and are formatted and structured like fanfic, even if the material in them is (theoretically) original. For book books, I still go all physical, and I doubt that hoard is going to disappear any time soon.

Considering that most Steam reviews amount to little more than "my pp hard lol" and "my parents are ashamed of me", I'm not going to pay it much mind. It's still FF8, and I enjoy it, warts and all, though I do wish they'd upgraded the backgrounds.

You're right, actually. It's SO2 for me. I despise SO3 for what it does to the overall story of the series (i.e. for how it makes SO2 completely irrelevant).

Got it for my Switch today, and it is about as hit-and-miss as I expected. The FMVs are about the same as before. Character models have been cleaned up, but the animations have not, and the result is visually ... odd, if that makes any sense. Very little has been done to the backgrounds.

Granted, I love FF8, and I am not sorry about getting this version, but perfection this is not. Then again, it never has been.

It does happen. My wife and I got engaged less than a week after meeting in person, and we will be celebrating our ten-year anniversary this Halloween. She was in her 30s, I was in my late 20s, but it all worked out. Maybe because we had both been in bad relationships before and had a good idea what not to do.

I am in favor of UBI, perhaps because I like the idea of all the underpaid, overworked service industry people quitting en masse when they are no longer slaves to their jobs. Would that actually happen? I don't know, but it's a mental image that appeals to me: No cashier to berate at the counter, no server to abuse at the restaurant, no one having to take shit from people for a living because they have no other choice. ... It's a nice ideal. People having time to not be at work, to just live their lives and have interactions with other people that don't involve creeping imbalances of social power.

Collection of Mana acquired for my Switch. Hook that to my brain, Nintendo. ... I mean, I'm not as far up Trials of Mana's ass as many old school fans of the series, but Secret of Mana is legitimately one of the best JRPGs of the SNES era, and I'm glad to have the chance to go back.

Or, I mean, I'll be glad to have the chance to go back once this overstuffed work week is over. :-P

As far as comics go, I almost wish they'd do the opposite: Instead of making the characters 'modern', they go back and make comic books or movies that place the characters back in the time periods when they were first introduced (or first retooled to become the versions most fans know, e.g. the X-Men). I'd love to see, say, Doctor Strange in the '60s, a true '40s Batman, etc. They almost did this with the alternate timeline X-Men movies, but they kept taking bigger and bigger jumps forward in time.

I need to count up my Funko Pops. I've got at least a couple dozen, though I'm not really a serious collector.

And, for a lark, I went to look at the Marvel Subscriptions page, and ... I found absolutely nothing that sparked my interest. Just another wave of the same titles restarted at Issue #1 after, what, a year? Maybe a year and a half? The same things that annoyed me when I stopped subscribing are still in place.

Call me weird, but I kinda missed the days when the issue numbers ran up into the hundreds.

The video game industry is looking to an all-digital future. If you don't have to make anything physical and only have to sell data, that's a lot more profit in the company pocket.

I didn't think there were really any rental stores left, honestly. When Blockbuster went, that was pretty much the end of that. And the industry would really like to finish killing off Game Stop, at this point.

Might be time to pass the torch from the Star Wars movies to all of those new Star Wars TV series on Disney +, perhaps.

I did a very geeky thing today. Had a stack of comic books from when I last had a subscription (... in 2014; this is the fruit of a long period of procrastination), so I took the time to bag and board them to take them out to one of the long boxes in the garage in order to free up a little space elsewhere.

Naturally, it made me reflect a bit. The issues I put up were all from the "Marvel NOW!" runs of Avengers, (not-so-)New Avengers, and Secret Avengers. "Marvel NOW!" was the time when I decided the direction of the comics side of Marvel was no longer for me, which is a shame, since it came after a period (Heroic Age) when I was still pretty excited to see what was coming next. I think, perhaps, when the movies started getting bigger than the source material, that was when I jumped ship.

Doesn't mean I won't go back and reread the oldies, though, even if "oldies" now includes the '00s runs, back when comic books started picking up a new head of steam after the clusterfuck that was the '90s and the comic book crash.
