I truly think GRRM had this ending planned, to some extent, from the beginning. But the gaps they had to fill in to get here pandered to a certain audience. And now we are left with a garbled mess of a conclusion.

Honestly they should have just kept the night king as climate change metaphor and everyone unites against him.

I DO like that we finally got to see what kind of damage a dragon can do to a city. After the dragons have been sidelined recently, seeing what drogon could do was a nice change of pace. It's just that because of what happened last episode this all feels unearned now.

Yeah the last episode unwittingly made this finale utterly devoid of any real dramatic continuum. There were a dozen ways they could have neutralized the scorpions instead of having the exact same scene play out again with a different result.

Moving on to everyone vs cersei? Okay cool, maybe we can subvert expectations and say this was REALLY what the "game" was about all along and we see a confrontation that was underneath it all from the start--o wait let's let a building fall on her.

So now it's Jon/the Starks vs Dany. A confrontation that will essentially begin and end in a single episode.
