In the story told by Super Mario Bros, Peach is near-invariably kidnapped by Bowser, her own will overpowered. In this story written and presented to kids over and over, Bowser had the agency and power to deny Peach her own and acted on it. Mario has the agency and power to fight through the horde of monsters and save Peach. But Peach does not have the power to do very much except maybe call Mario for help. To say Mario "has no agency" because "I need to press the buttons!!" is wildly pedantic. It's like arguing you can't say characters in a movie had agency because you paused it, or characters in a book because you can stop reading and their story ends. --- |
