MLP 9-15- 2, 4, 6, Great: I feel like this whole issue could've been avoided by, like, just letting Dash coach the athletes and Pinkie coach the cheer squad. Ya gotta match your people to your needs better than that, Twilight. I don't really "get" cheerleading either, but I'm here for Yona and Smolder and the idol-lookin' randos. Doesn't hurt me to hear the moral of this one once in a while, either.

Aria 2-17- something about a starry night?: Part 2 of saying goodbye to the gondola- is this the first two-parter we've seen? More flashbacks, as this was actually Alicia's first gondola as well.

FE: Gilbert is another dude who strikes me as suspicious- he keeps insisting that talking is pointless and we just have to fight, and we keep listening to him. Y'know who's REALLY suspicious though is Rodrigue, with his no supports or customization. I'm starting to wonder if I'm missing some mid-battle recruitment opportunities with all these people, but I don't think I've seen a Talk prompt since the tutorial. My team seems to be falling behind a bit somehow- I fought some swordmasters that could one shot most of my team. Part of it is that I'm having trouble accessing classes as more of my guys hit 30. I want everybody to keep advancing so I have some people in worse classes than the ones they've mastered- I un-Dancered Dorothea, and my MC herself switched to Assassin and is missing her magic badly. But Dedue is back!

CHIKARA Speaking in Tongues: Chandler McClure has a very loud whistle and he will face Niles Young. Decent little crowdwarmer. (**1/2) Men at Work/FIST runback with a longer time limit. Oddly serious and slow burning match that actually goes outside and to the back and stuff! Even with the extra, uh, seven minutes, it still goes to time limit. Good time though. FIST showing some edge. (**1/2) There's an RoH trainee roundrobin for a spot in YLC but I have been told to skip these strange black-clothed people. Last minute looked pretty solid but instead let's have a Sabian promo. He's putting up the CZW Jr. Heavyweight title against Ravage. Good match, Sabian over. (***)

Secret History: Was kinda losing me for a bit in the middle but now that Kel is doing more stuff with more characters we know it's cool again. Wonder what woulda happened if Vin had talked to Hoid?

FE: I'm still grooving on the gameplay but the story is starting to irritate me. "Should we go for the Empire or the Kingdom?" "every character around weighs in" >okay let's do the Kingdom "yeah that's gonna be a tough decision" "so yeah we're going to the Empire" and then "should we go East or West with no further info?" >West "no that's dumb we're going east" That and I'm pretty sick of Dmitri.

I have been checking the statues every time I Explore but my progress is slowing :\

11th Metal: Man I didn't realize I missed Kelsier this much. Bossing "Fuzz" around is pretty great. Kinda curious where this is going though! My instinct is that Kel is gonna turn out to have accomplished one last small but important thing from the afterlife, but I can't think of any room for him to have done that. (other than the whole "appearing to people" thing but that was already a plan in motion) Also we switched which metal was which number and introduced so many in weird orders that I don't actually remember what "the eleventh metal" wound up being >_> Gold? ....More importantly did we just freakin' punch Hoid in the face

Aria 2-16- Parting with that Gondola...: Akari's gondola is getting worn out, so we're going to decommission it and give it to a cargo person. This being a Japanese show, we're going to take it for one last spin to say goodbye first. We even pick up Akatsuki to recreate our first fare! I don't subscribe to the whole kami thing but I still get irrationally sentimental about inanimate objects like this sometimes, so this is nice. We get a nice little trip down memory lane (actually I don't recall offhand some of these flashbacks having been shown previously) and then a mysterious old man appears in the boat. He's probably the spirit of the gondola but it was all just a dream...or was it?!?!? Man even I got a bit melancholy at the end there. New ED, too, unless I'm just losin' it.

Disgaea 2: Chapter 5 beated. Good for Taro! I know I got to the arena part before, but am not sure I got to the end of it because IIRC it went a few chapters.

The quick deaths were confusing? Any ideas on what I could do better on the writing side?

My plan for next time is twofold:

-Stat out basic and skill attacks for everybody. This time around, I did stats for NPs but ran everything else off the basic parameters (STR/END/AGI/MAG). I think I can do a bit more nuance there, and it will likely make basic attacks less effective than flashier ones.
-Use Command Spells as extra "saving throws" against death, and maybe make them very strong but affected more by damage than normal checks. I kinda halfway did that anyway on the very last fight of this game. Will also make it more important to stick with your Servant since I was kinda lax on that this game.

The cliff's notes of how the combat system works is that there's an AGI v. AGI check for initiative, then a check to see if the attack hits (most commonly AGI/AGI this time, but that's one of the things I'm going to go into more detail on), then a check to see if it does damage. (this time it was STR/MAG v. END but next time each attack will have a different rating) If somebody takes damage, they receive penalties on future checks, in theory leading to a cool system where you slow down until you can't make an END check. But all you need to kill somebody is a crit on that third check, and it's not unthinkable to hit that even on a fully healed opponent. That's what happened to Salter, for example. So statting out attacks should make "basic bonk with a sword" less likely to do that, and using CS as a saving throw should be a good way to stop that from happening at the beginning of a fight. Maybe.

....The simpler plan, I realize now that I've typed all that, would be to make "basic attacks" non-lethal, but I am not sure I can reconcile swords and magic bolts and guns and stuff like that as stunning damage >_>

BTE 68-69: The "toxicology report" on Masa got me for some reason.

Emperor's Soul: As fun as I remembered. Still one of my favorite magic systems even competing with all the other nifty Sanderson magic systems.

SHOW 2-5

-@davidponte brings out his guest for the evening, @eaedwards6400 . Eaed gives the same ol' underdog promo he's been giving the last couple of months, and the crowd is starting to get tired of it.

-Cena enters for his match....but there's a chant of "Johnny Sucks!" They are, of course, referring to the celebrated Dickieverse and nLverse superstar of the same name, but it takes Cena a second to figure out that he hasn't timetravelled to the mid-2000s....and in that time, @Maniac64 jumps him from behind.

-Match: Cena v. King Maniac
Cena struggles to rebound from the sneak attack, and after he does, he starts playing to the crowd, giving Maniac a chance to recover and suplex him to heck. But Cena busts out an Angle Lock! Maniac gets to the ropes, and Cena gives him a parting stomp as they break. ....Maniac sells it as a low blow! Senior Official Joe Mason didn't have a good angle...so he believes him, and DQs Cena! Cena is furious! He wants a rematch...in a CAGE.

-@TheSultanOfSlam is in his locker room. Somebody is knocking on his door, telling him to hurry up and get ready for his match. He is getting quite annoyed, and gets up to answer the door. There's a loud thumping sound, and when he opens up the door, a nameless staff person is sprawled on the floor, bleeding lightly from the head. Sultan is pleased by this senseless violence, and heads to the ring in a good mood.

-HARDCORE TITLE: Champion TheSultanOfSlam v. M. Bison
Sultan whiffs a haymaker, and Bison kicks out his leg. Sultan goes to one knee, and gets kicked in the head. Bison taunts the champ, and gets a big lariat for his troubles! Bison rolls to the outside, and catches Sultan with a big right hand as he tries to follow. Bison picks up Sultan on the outside, but Sultan shoves him into the barricade. Sultan then finds a ladder under the ring, and jabs it at Bison's legs. On trying a heavier strike, though, Sultan plays into a Devil's Reverse. Bison comes crashing down on Sultan, but Sultan gets the ladder between them, and both men are down. Sultan's up first, but Bison trips him. Double stomp to Sultan's back! Cover! 1.....2.....3!

-Sonya from Langrisser is backstage. Humans are weak, so it stands to reason that even a strong one like Sultan would fall before a demon like Bison.

Eddv is getting a lot of heat tonight. Commentary is burying Eaed for his losing streak and failed promo, and Eaed gets sick of it. He gets in (the recently recovered) Vampiro's face....and decks him! Dude had it coming, really. The ref is not going to allow that though, and calls for a DQ.

Ciconia: Shooting from the hip: there are multiple Gunhilds, possibly beyond the level of the whole parallel personality thing. And/or she faked her death. Anyway BEATED. And man I have said it before but it really feels like he's speaking straight to the modern US. This gon' be gud.

CHIKARA Speaking in Tongues: Knight Eye is joined by Allison Danger to take on S&S (Sweeney, Rorshach, Sharecropper) after some quick promos from both sides. The rudos have been doing hindu squats to prepare. Neat spot with Roger catching Rorshach off the top and countering with a slam. Took a bit to get going but then was pretty cool towards the end. Faces over after a failed attempt at cheating. Sweeney wants a rematch! Diapers vs. Danger as a slave!

Arcanum Unbounded: Here it goes again. I don't know that I really need to re-hear the parts I already did, but I liked them and haven't done my homework yet so we're at least re-hitting Emperor's Soul.

Kinda sorta! Cities and Knights has more ways to score so you're not as screwed if you only get two spots. Seafarers IIRC has some scenarios with more tiles. I haven't played anything else enough to remember. (You could also just get the 5-6 player expansion and then play the bigger map with 3-4 I guess)

fall-behind losers concern me more than runaway leaders!

I don't even mind fall-behind losers if it still feels like you're doing something. Like say Dominion you can still usually improve your deck and have a sense of progress even if you have no chance of winning. Catan if you get that far behind you probably have junk production and/or have gotten fenced in so there's not even much you can do except wait for the sweet release of somebody else winning.

My buddy and I played a lot of 2p catan just by increasing the target score. (I think it was 12 for base and 15 for cities/knights/whatever else added more scoring opportunities) Worked fine imo unless you're really into the area control aspect.

Catan has a special place in my heart but it does not hold up that great against the litany of games I've played since. It is indeed the dang worst game in which to fall behind, which was usually my role. Got some fun expansions tho.

FE: Oh cool, I can train with my "students" now. And....the monastery is kinda not very different otherwise, lol. Interesting that I don't have control over Dmitri's Goals now.

Trails: Cleared up the last couple quests before I ship out to Zeiss- exterminated a couple monsters, and stopped a bit short of 100% on the ingredient hunt. Wasn't gonna be a 100% file anyway since I've already screwed up one quest somehow.

Ciconia: ....oh, that's it! Was hoping it would go farther and assuming there would be loops like the other ones. Most shocking thing was the potential of an Okonogi face turn. ....Did they really manage to fit in a Cookie Clicker reference? Post-game is a good time as usual, but I didn't finish it before NYE company got here.

FE: Timeskip get! Really glad I didn't go the Dmitri route because boy am I sick of him already. Both the big climactic battle and the big heroic battle were really touch and go. Kinda spoiled the moment of reuniting with everybody when half the kids who showed up were a few levels behind and/or weirdly classed, and then went splat. At least the girls got prettier. Still kinda need a break for a sec though after struggling against jobber bandits with edgelord mconeeye.

I definitely rotated that pic but WHATEVER it's a live update.

I know pretty much nothing about GU, up to and including who Haseo is. I think this is where Atoli comes from though, and I had her once in Mercs and she did an absolutely terrible job but seemed nice. I think this is a relatively recent purchase, and I don't think I've read it before now. Let's roll. According to the end notes, this is a slightly different retelling of regular G.U., which actually came out before the games for whatever reason.

Some PK's do a PK, and then Haseo saves a Wave Master (Atoli?) from being their next victim. He is the legendary PKK, who kills PKs and then they can never come back. Somehow. Haseo is your vanilla edgy cool loner type so far. Player Killing is a relatively recently development in The World (....wasn't that a thing in the older ones though?) and then PKKs came along to kill the PKs and for some reason Sakaki thinks it's their fault that The World is grittier and less friendly. He yells at Haseo and Atoli whines about people's feelings, but he gets a cryptic email and blows them off to go do a thing.

Haseo goes to Hidden Forbidden Holy Ground because everything that happens in this franchise happens there. There he finds Tri-Edge, Ovan, and/or Shino, which he's been looking for. We have a cryptic backstory-related conversation that even Haseo has trouble understanding, but as best I can figure, Shino and Ovan disappeared and Haseo became edgy, and also Atoli looks like Shino. Tri-Edge is a person, who killed Shino in the game, causing her to go into a coma IRL. Ovan is going to be the mysterious mentor/anti-hero/rival type I guess. He peaces out and Tri-Edge shows up, looking like an eeeeeevil version of Kite or Shugo. Despite an outburst of righteous fury, Haseo ain't doing so hot in the ensuing fight.

Never ye mind though, it's time to flashback. Okay flashback over. It looks like maybe Ovan used to be a PKK?

Haseo wakes up and some important half-naked lady I feel like I should recognize identifies Tri-Edge as Azure Flame Kite, and says that he data drained Haseo. Then she and her fellow game admin, Tattoo Man, somehow teleported him to the system area Serpent of Lore. They want to have a chat about AFK before he creates more Lost Ones, but Haseo is not having any of it after they covered up the Shino incident.

Haseo storms off to go be edgy somewhere else, but gets an encouraging lecture from Atoli about feelings and people and connections. Atoli is petitioning to end PKing. The surviving bit villains from the opening scene are bored. Haseo needs to get stronger, and goes back to HBHG, where the sign of Tri-Edge zots him to a, uh, Lost Ground. Hey, it's Bordeaux, the head PK person we killed in the opening! She has some kinda power up from somebody, and is looking for revenge and a ticket back by killing Haseo. Her attacks hurt for real oh no! She's about to finish Haseo off when the save is made by some dude, who blows her away. He gives us more exposition on how AIDA possess people. He's Kuhn, who's in GU along with the two admins I guess. Epitaph Users like him (and Haseo, apparently) are needed to fight the AIDA.

Now we come to you live from an arena, where defeated champ Alkaid (hey that's probably where somebody got the idea when I asked B8 to name my character in FE!) is using her rematch clause against Endrance, who is cool enough to have an Epitaph AND AIDA. He name drops Mia and then Alkaid is defeated by the work of an enemy stand Avatar. Only Epitaph Users can see the Avatars of other Epitaph Users. This dude's looks a bit like a Persona version of Mia. He identifies Haseo and scoffs at his weakness.

Haseo has challenged Endrance to a fight, despite being the clear underdog who stands to die in real life. Ovan has Atoli tell Haseo to become stronger to save Shino. Endrance OHKO's Haseo, but he gets better and awakens to his persona Avatar, Skeith.

My rating: 6/10
Might be an interesting spin with some of the callbacks to the original, but I didn't really like any of the characters so it's hard to get invested. Bit too 90s edgy right out of the gate.

.hack/Legend of the Twilight Vol. 3/3

We all came back together and even brought in some of the OGs for a big never-give-up battle with some face turns and stuff. Would have had a bigger impact probably if I hadn't taken, what, four months off? But a solid shounen conclusion nonetheless. Big volume with tons of omake things afterwards.
Overall rating: 8/10
Kinda paint-by-numbers, but it came before a lot of series that did similar things, so can't really hold that against it. Executed fairly well, art's to my taste. Didn't hold up super great, in no small part because I got a lot older and the fanservice characters didn't.

.hack/XXXX, Vol. 1
This covers the original games, I guess, making it a weird sorta prequel to Legend of the Twilight. I don't know how many volumes there were, but the first one already covers a lot farther than I ever got. (I got stuck on I think the final dungeon of the first game? IIRC everything was suddenly immune to physical damage and I didn't have the magic resources or patience to deal with it) Got a bit confusing because they kept jumping around with flashbacks and such, but still did its job and got me interested to see where it was going. Which is kinda unfortunate because .hack and its fifty million constituent entries just kinda dropped off the planet entirely years ago. Maybe I'll watch some Let's Plays in the Tompic instead! (cross promotion woooo)
My rating: 7/10
Bit more interesting than Legend of the Twilight I think, but doesn't have the nostalgia goggles going for it, nor the rest of the story available, so I don't think it'll really stick with me at all.

Y'all doing the GSSR? I got a bunch of google play cards for christmas so I was considering actually taking the plunge....but.....ehh. $40 is a lot (even if I'm just going to spend it on other mobage) and there are too many 5* I don't actually like and too many classes where I already have plenty of dudes I do like.

I will agree Adam Driver did the best with what he was given. I wouldn't call Kylo himself an amazing character though.
