If it is a character I am making and not one that was already established, I make characters who act as I would in the situation. The character may not look like me, but the personality I impart in them makes them basically an idealized version of myself.

I find that the only way I can play a dick/evil bastard is if the character is already established. The one sort of exception is the Saints Row series.

oh yeah, this is a fair point. My characters don't look like me (I just pick whatever looks cool) but they tend to act like I would want to act.
