The goofy stuff takes us out of the match. We can suspend our disbelief to a point, but when it becomes overly silly and fake looking we don't like it. Certainly most of indy wrestling and AEW is just indy wrestling with a bigger budget. It's all about how it's a bunch of guys putting on a performance for the fans while going "hey, wrestling sure is stupid ain't it?" and then continuously taking the piss out of the thing they supposedly love. There's too many nerds in wrestling. It's nerdy wrestlers wanting to do video game and anime crap in the ring and nerdy neckbeard fans who eat it all up and love all the meta humor targeted at them.
