Why are we even still on such bad terms with Iran in the first place? The Iran hostage crisis was a whole 40 years ago.

In 1953 the CIA assasinated their democratically elected president and took their oil.

Also we encouraged and materially supported Saddam Husseins invasion of Iran, which was really horrible.
He then invaded Kuwait after losing, so that went about as well as our meddling normally does.

I mean, we're creating a society of despair over here. You can work 80 hours a week and not make ends meet, and even if you're doing well, odds are you're doing worse than your parent's generation. Real wages haven't grown, real income for most is declining, healthcare and a college education are more expensive now than ever, and are proportionally much more expensive now than they were even a decade or two ago. The housing market is the playground of speculators and gentrifiers, and decreased incomes and increased debt loads of the average person means good housing is out of reach for many, if not most. It's easy to feel like things won't get better, either, because they've demonstrably been getting worse for a long while, and not much has been done or is being done to fix it. Good luck saving for retirement, because nobody is any rush to patch up Social Security*. It's little wonder so many people turn to opioids to ease the pain.

*Except for Boomers. And don't you even dare suggest we raise the cap on the payroll tax, that's unrealistic. What's realistic is that everyone will work to 75+ or starve.

I mean, you cannot ever discount the societal factors. There's ample reason to be anxious and depressed in our country today, and trying to sugar-coat what's happening is akin to putting lipstick on a pig.

TopicCan anyone provide specific reasons why Hillary Clinton was a bad candidate?
ElatedVenusaur
07/08/19 3:13:15 PM

Some general ones...

1) Her campaign was based in Brooklyn and ran entirely based on analyzing current polls and demographics to understand the status of the race. Apparently, warnings from politicians and campaign staff "on the ground" in pivotal states like Wisconsin and Pennsylvania were discounted as being baseless, when in fact they were early-warning signs that the race was changing and the campaign needed to invest more in those areas. This meant Clinton's campaign was sluggish and slow to respond to changing conditions.

2) She basically campaigned on boiler-plate notions, like "Stronger Together" and countered "Make America Great Again" with "America is already great!" which to many felt like it erased their very real struggles and problems(as well as their imagined ones).

3) Basically none of her policy proposals were ambitious, but just tinkering, here and there. That made her seem unconcerned and doesn't fire anyone up(something like 100 million voters stayed home).

4) Being tied to Bill didn't help her much: combined with the above two factors and her association with Obama, it painted her as representing a status quo not many liked.

5) Scandals. Most were made up of course, but it made it easy for the media to lazily smear her and Trump with the same brush.

6)Her campaign was also allegedly bad about coordinating with local Democratic campaigns, leading to a lot of inefficiencies which helped to negate some of her money advantage.

Oh, here's a good one: that the Austrian-Hungarian and Ottoman Empires were on the verge of collapse. They were, in fact, quite stable. The former had made a number of reforms prior to the First World War which gave virtually all subjects representation in Parliament and many areas had local autonomy.
The Ottoman Empire, for its part, also had an elective government(though the sultan and some unelected ministers still possessed broad power), and the argument that its subjects could either enjoy its rule, or be ruled by imperialistic Christians was actually pretty effective. The "Arab Revolt" was actually just the Emir of Hejaz calculating that the British would be better patrons than the Turks(and also he thought the Turks were going to depose him soon), and the famous Arab army led by Prince Feisal and T.E. Lawrence was primarily composed of Arabic soldiers who had been serving in the Ottoman army before being captured by the British and given the option to serve in Feisal's army or remain prisoners. They were actually useful in Allenby's campaigns, but were never the center-piece.
Also, while we're on the subject, the British also had another Arabian client: Abdul Aziz Ibn Saud, in Nejd. He and Emir Hussein of Hejaz were bitter rivals, yet the British continued funding both even after the war, at least until Ibn Saud conquered the Hejaz and proclaimed Saudi Arabia. So they were basically paying them to fight each other. The British continued to antagonize Ibn Saud by crowing Feisal and his brother Abdullah. The former first in Syria(the French formally controlled the area and evicted him, as he wasn't pliable enough for their liking) and then Iraq. The latter was crowned king of Transjordan(now just Jordan), which the British had originally intended to be part of their "Jewish National Home".
Did I mention no one in Iraq wanted to be ruled by some Bedouin guy from the Hejaz they had barely ever heard of?

Yeah, IIRC, of the battles Alexander fought against the Persians were pretty close for a while, it's just that he was very capable of turning a break into a full-rout(and undoubtedly the figures given to us by Greek historians in regards to disparities in army sizes and casualties are a bit exaggerated).
And Macedonian phalanx were an entirely different animal than Greek hoplites. Hoplites usually wielded a spear that was about 7-8 feet in length. A Macedonian sarisa was 13-20 ft. long. It was incredibly difficult for most things to get into attacking range from the front.
So yeah, completely different animal, and for a while they made fools of basically every other kind of infantry. Plus, Alexander inherited a lot of experienced commanders and was both uncommonly bold and a master tactician. He was incredibly adept at appearing in the most unlikely places in even short time-frames.

Not even that: Belichick has been on the cutting-edge schematically basically his entire time with the Patriots. He was always a defensive mastermind, but he became equally competent in offense and special teams as well. No other coach has set the schematic tone for the league like he has, and none for anywhere near as long, either.
On the other hand, you have goobers like Mike McCarthy, who had one good idea once fifteen years ago and got hired on that basis, and dinosaurs like Tony Dungy who think "innovation" is an dirty word.

Buttigieg has managed to attract a lot of donor support, but seems dead in the water with anyone who isn't white.
I now think it's more likely than not the top three are going to be Sanders, Harris, and Warren. I don't think Biden is smart or self-effacing enough to change course, so he'll just keep torpedoing himself.

Nah, the Nazis were pretty hell-bent on the war, and the general staff was too until they started losing. I would say that removing Hitler may have prolonged the war, but they could have easily ended up with Himmler or Goering in charge, and they would probably have been even more blood-thirsty and dumb.
But really, the general staff wasn't much better than those ghouls anyway. Their biggest beef weren't any of the atrocities, but that they were losing and Hitler was a micro-managing idiot.

Three is admittedly a bit much, but it's not inherently a bad thing to use more than a 1:1 ratio

Yeah, I feel like The Hobbit could easily be two movies, with more attention paid to some of the battles so you have spectacular set-pieces, but they made it, like, 3 movies averaging over 2 and a half hours each.
They basically wanted it to be Lord of the Rings, which is missing the entire point of the book.

I voted too hastily: Hungary basically already is Fascist(and Russia 100% is, but I assume that's a given). Poland is well along the path as well.

Both the U.S. and Brazil have fascistic presidents, though I don't think either will entirely succumb yet(even if Trump or Bolsonaro get re-elected). Neither is as far from the event horizon as I would like though.

Italy has an ineffectual centrist outsider party in coalition with a fascist party, and the rest of the political spectrum appears just as devoid of answers. Fascism could win by default(appropriately, Mussolini's granddaughter is involved).

Germany is unique, in that the ruling center-right party is unpopular and their one-time rivals, the supposed Socialist Democratic Party, seem hell-bent on going down with their coalition partner's ship. Even so, Germany doesn't appear to be near the event horizon yet.

The UK, well, I actually have hope for the UK, because Corbyn is running on a platform that could douse the flames and Labour is now leading in most GE polls, but the British media and many in his own party seem intent on sabotaging him. If they're successful, the Fash will win.

I worry about France though: Macron sucks and only won election because he wasn't Marine Le Pen. If the presidential election was today, Le Pen might well win on the virtue of not being Emmanuel Macron. Really, this is a specter that threatens virtually all European and American states.

Movie Frankenstein, the one who was a doctor, was actually a pretty decent person aside from being a little too ambitious and choosing the wrong company.

The novel is pretty shitty tbh. No idea how it became a classic.

It was the first foray into horror sci fi.

Also, it's beautifully written. There's this slow, creeping inevitability to it, and the very pertinent question of how reliable the narrator is.
And it's depressing as all hell, but then so was Mary Shelley's life, so she was just writing what she knew, really.
