lol KH3. Currently losing to a remake and might eventually lose to Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice depending on how the night vote goes.

So much for a game that had Top 10 potential in the next GotD contest. KH3 currently has the lowest MetaCritic score and lowest GameFAQs user rating out of the 3 main games. I still expect KH3 to be stronger than at least 75% of the GotD 2 field because of playrate reasons, and because this contest will have the weakest overall field of games in any contest.

Good start for the Phillies. No hits for Bryce Harper, but he did help set up a grand slam by getting an intentional walk to load up the bases (bad mistake by the Braves).

Think about how the contest could have been different if this new poll layout was in effect!

This poll layout wouldn't have affected the contest at all. Contest matches were the first thing you saw on the homepage after getting past the site header, even for those on Mobile. The new poll layout only applies to the regular polls.

@LusterSoldier The past 2 polls have surpassed the 11,000 vote barrier by 2,000 votes, and the current one is about 14 hours in and already at the 10,000 mark.

Any explanation to this spike?

It's most likely caused by the new poll layout that was introduced 2 days ago. Several months ago, a feature was removed from the site that allowed mobile users to navigate to the PotD much easier. Without that feature, it seemed like vote totals dropped off slightly and this is supported by the following poll result:

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/poll/7168-

During the history of that poll, the "All the time" option had been consistently trending upwards until the most recent result where it dropped off in percentage. In 2017, the "All the time" option got 13.09%, but dropped off to 11.88% in the 2018 poll after a feature was removed to allow mobile users to navigate to the poll much easier. I noticed a drop off in vote totals in early August of 2018, which was around the time that feature was removed.

The new poll layout is good for vote totals because mobile users don't have to scroll very far to find the poll now. During the poll when the new poll layout was introduced, we were originally on track to finish with around 11000 votes based on the 12 hour mark, but ended up finishing almost 2600 votes higher than that expected total. In the poll update data from that poll, I uncovered evidence of a vote total spike that happened around the time the new layout went into effect.

The GameFAQs unemployment rate is approximately 12.5% according to yesterday's Poll of the Day. That's over three times the US unemployment rate, even for the age group of 25-34 years. I'm guessing the reason for that is that many gamers are lazy and/or anti-social. That would limit friends and networking, limiting employment opportunities.

I was also quite a bit surprised that the Full-Time Work option got almost 58%. At least in the US, Obamacare killed off a lot of full-time jobs due to businesses being required to provide health insurance to their employees if they have at least 50 full-time workers. Retail jobs were most affected by this employer mandate, while minimum wage jobs were disproportionally affected by the mandate. As a result, many people were stuck with part-time jobs, so I thought this would have had some effect on the site's American userbase voting in this poll. Guess not.

Of course, the employer mandate doesn't apply to businesses with less than 50 full-time employees, which would mostly apply to small businesses. So it could still be possible for someone to have a full-time job in the US despite being paid at or just slightly above the minimum wage.

The Full-Time Work option getting almost 58% in this poll means that we have a large enough userbase to support an After Work Vote. Generally speaking, only full-time workers would be expected to contribute towards an After Work Vote. Part-time workers usually don't work enough hours each day to be faced with a situation where they have to wait until getting home from work to vote in the poll, though it could be possible with an 8+ hour work day.

Yeah, different design, no additional features other than being able to see what you already voted for from the front page.

I wouldn't rule out the possibility of multi-select polls being possible. However, those kinds of polls would be extremely rare if Allen ever chose to run multi-select polls. There are very few poll ideas that would be suitable for a multi-select poll. One possible idea for a multi-select poll could ask you which "numbered" Final Fantasy games you have played (you'd be allowed to select multiple games, one for each game you've played). The main problem with multi-select polls would be making it clear to visitors that they can select multiple options if they want. This requires a short message below the poll stating something to the effect of "This is a multi-select poll - you may select more than one option".

Well, it's easier for me to handle extreme cold compared to extreme hot. Another problem is that the humidity in my area is generally on the high side during the summer, so even a moderate warm temperature (around 80) feels hot due to the relatively high humidity. The humidity in my area rarely goes below 50% during the summer. At least in the winter, humidity means jack shit because it's still cold anyways.

No wonder older games are as strong as they are now.

It's still interesting to see the 2010's being on par with the 2000's. It might make debatable matches like BotW vs. WW/TP, SMO vs. SMG, and P5 vs. P4 more interesting.

Over the history of that poll, the 2010s have gotten stronger, but all of that it is coming at the expense of the 2000s while the 1990s has maintained its strength. The 2000s getting weaker at the expense of the 2010s shouldn't be taken as evidence that the 2010s would be on par with the 2000s since voters of the 2000s seem more likely to continue playing modern games than those who vote for the 1990s.

My guess is that the 2010s would be only slightly weaker than the 2000s.

The results of today's poll are very disappointing. Slightly over half of the site doesn't know any of the starters past the early generations. That's really disappointing for the series as a whole, and is likely a decent proxy for the percentage of the site that hasn't played a Pokemon game after Gen 3.

Yeah, the poll is leaning far too heavily towards modern games. The oldest game in that poll was Resident Evil 2, which was released in 1998. It was the only game from the 1990s in the poll.

Personally, I would have kept Dark Souls II and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 out of this poll in favor of more 1990s representation such as Sonic 2 and Street Fighter II.

Hmm, the new purge rates don't seem to work the way I thought they would. We actually went above 400 topics for the first time prior to this morning's purge, so I thought that meant the entire board would switch over to a 5 day purge rate and kill off an ass load of topics (over 100 of them). But we only lost around 20 topics from the most recent purge.

This seems to prove that we don't have a universal purge rate for the entire board based on the current number of topics, like with the old system when it was based on message count. I suppose it's better that way as we wouldn't lose a massive number of topics as a result of moving into a higher purge rate schedule, but also makes things more complicated in determining which topics will purge each night and which ones are still safe.

Well, this is good change for sure. Though we're currently at a 10 day purge rate, it hasn't been 10 full days since the new purge rates have been put in place, so we could still build up enough topics to potentially reach the 5 day purge rate. During the contest season, I expect the board to be on a 5 day purge rate due to the increased activity (and possibly even a 2 day purge rate).

DanKirby posted...
The way it's worded makes me think the system is slightly different: whether a topic is purged when the cleanup system runs depends on both the position of the topic on the topic list and how long ago the topic was last posted in.
For example, assuming 50 topics per page, any topic on Pages 5-8 that hasn't been posted in in over 10 days will be purged. However, if there are topics on Page 4 that are also more than 10 days inactive, they will not be purged at that time. Also, if enough topics build up that the board passes the 401 mark, only the topics on Page 9-15 will be purged at the 5-day mark, while the topics on Pages 4-8 will remain as long as they are still under the 10-day threshold.

Should also be noted that stickied topics apparently don't count towards the purge rate. We currently have one stickied topic on this board, so you would have to begin counting the total topics from the first non-stickied topic. This means we wouldn't cross over into the 5 day purge rate until reaching 402 topics as we have one stickied topic on this board.

Wow, the results of today's poll are a bit surprising:

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/poll/7496-

I expected PlayStation Plus to be more popular than Nintendo Switch Online, but not to this extent.

Subscriber rate for the 3 online console services right now:

Xbox Live Gold - 15.82%
Nintendo Switch Online - 27.99%
PlayStation Plus - 39.96%

Right now, slightly less than half of all Switch owners on this site have subscribed to Nintendo Switch Online. I thought the Switch having the most hyped game on this site in a very long time (since Skyrim) would have helped the subscriber rate of Nintendo Switch Online as you need that to play SSBU online. The cost is also a huge positive for Nintendo Switch Online, as it's far cheaper than PlayStation Plus for a one year subscription.

Despite all that, I didn't think PlayStation Plus would be so easily ahead of Nintendo Switch Online.

Now that yesterday's KH3 poll has ended, we can now look at the results in more detail. Here's the KH3 poll and the KH2 poll for comparison:

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/poll/7490-
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/poll/2335-

For KH3, 36.88% of the site either has the game right now or plans to pick up the game very soon. In the KH2 poll, 45.50% of the site either had the game or planned to get the game very soon based on the first 3 options in the KH2 poll.

A lower percentage of this site plans to get KH3 near the launch date compared to KH2. It's worth noting that the KH2 poll took place back in 2006 during a time when the site demographics were much different. In 2006, our average age was around 19, so there would have been a larger percentage of the site that would have been open to playing a Kingdom Hearts game. In the 13 years after KH2's release, our average age has gone way up. In the same way that people may have quit Pokemon because they were getting too old for it, I suspect some people also outgrew Kingdom Hearts as they got older, so that may be another contributing factor to the series getting weaker on this site.

Number 2 is the main reason switch has so many votes. Its clearly the new and hit playform right now. And yeah PS4 does have higher playerbase

Unless you dont own the consoles but choices 1ans 3 should be the reasons to pick your system of th year.

I did run a poll on a different board as to how people decide their vote for System of the Year, and "most played system in 2018" was the most popular reason in how they choose which system to vote for. About half of all voters simply go with their most played system with the other half of voters being evenly split between favorite system right now and the system with the strongest library.

Most played system in 2018 explaining why PS4 won System of the Year makes sense since PS4 has been the winner of the "most played system recently" polls such as these polls:

Head to head results between God of War / Red Dead Redemption 2 / Super Smash Bros. Ultimate from the 3 main GotY polls:

SSBU vs. God of War (9-way poll) - 56.54%
SSBU vs. God of War (3-way poll) - 56.58%
SSBU vs. God of War (1v1 poll) - 54.33%
God of War vs. RDR2 (9-way poll) - 56.56%
God of War vs. RDR2 (3-way poll) - 61.05%
SSBU vs. RDR2 (9-way poll) - 62.88%
SSBU vs. RDR2 (3-way poll) - 67.13%

Even though God of War was largely consistent against SSBU in the 9-way and 3-way polls, RDR2 was not consistent between those 2 polls. RDR2 did worse against both God of War and SSBU in the 3-way poll compared to the 1v1 poll. The best explanation for RDR2 getting weaker in the 3-way poll is the anti-vote factor. RDR2 had a far worse early vote in the 9-way poll, and there were only 2 other options someone could vote for if they wanted to anti-vote RDR2 in the 3-way poll (one of which also has a poor early vote). RDR2 only went from 19.68% in the 9-way poll to 21.69% in the 3-way poll. Based on the 9-way poll results, RDR2 should have actually gotten 25.03% instead. I do think the 3-way poll is a better measure of RDR2's strength in a 1v1 poll, especially when anti-votes are an intrinsic part of its strength.

The GTA series is well-known for being anti-voted on this site. The developer of the GTA games is Rockstar. RDR2 is also developed by the same company. It seems likely that all Rockstar games will suffer from anti-votes on this site.

SSBU was pretty consistent on God of War in the 9-way and 3-way poll, but it performed about 2% worse in the 1v1 poll. One possible explanation for this is LFF and this would have been absent from the 1v1 poll. God of War and RDR2 would largely appeal to the same group of gamers.

Poll updates and trend charts for the 3-way and 1v1 GotY polls:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/17hoT3q7uhwz4siwbJN3oaLGPoiPpgpc7aX5XBvzZUX4/pub

Trend chart for the 3-way poll:

Time | GoW | Red Dead 2 | SSBU | Votes | Demographic
EBV | 29.81% | 16.77% | 53.42% | 161 | (0:00-0:05)
PHV | 30.05% | 19.62% | 50.33% | 1065 | (0:00-1:00)
FNV | 34.62% | 20.28% | 45.10% | 2441 | (1:00-6:00)
BSV | 34.41% | 22.74% | 42.85% | 1517 | (6:00-9:00)
DSV | 35.23% | 21.97% | 42.81% | 2836 | (9:00-14:30)
ASV | 33.25% | 23.41% | 43.34% | 2704 | (14:30-22:00)
SNV | 35.21% | 19.07% | 45.72% | 514 | (22:00-24:00)

God of War and RDR2 both have a terrible early vote. God of War does best at night and during the morning vote, but it does drop off during the day vote before getting a boost during the SNV again. RDR2's trends are a bit different from God of War, since it does only slightly better during the night vote compared to the Power Hour. RDR2 has a good moring vote and an even better day vote.

SSBU has a very strong early vote and Power Hour, then drops off hard during the night vote and performs worst during the morning and day vote. SSBU does perform better during the SNV, but it still doesn't come close to the Power Hour.

Trend chart for the 1v1 poll:

Time | GoW | SSBU | Votes | Demographic
EBV | 33.11% | 66.89% | 148 | (0:00-0:05)
PHV | 43.58% | 56.42% | 966 | (0:00-1:00)
FNV | 46.39% | 53.61% | 2272 | (1:00-6:00)
BSV | 46.99% | 53.01% | 1281 | (6:00-9:00)
DSV | 45.46% | 54.54% | 2633 | (9:00-14:30)
ASV | 45.49% | 54.51% | 2449 | (14:30-22:00)
SNV | 45.02% | 54.98% | 462 | (22:00-24:00)

SSBU again has a very strong early vote, but it lost nearly 7% on the second update of the poll before losing almost another 4% before the end of the Power Hour. SSBU performs worst during the night vote and early morning vote. God of War even managed to win 2 hours over SSBU overnight and also cut 31 votes off SSBU's lead (314 to 283) during the night vote. It took until 8:00 AM for SSBU to take control of this poll and begin extending its lead over God of War again.

Unlike in the 3-way poll, SSBU actually showed signs of a day vote here, but it still pales in comparison to the Power Hour. This poll happened on a weekend, which could explain the difference in trends between the 3-way and 1v1 polls. The day vote on the weekend starts in the morning. Another important element that fewer people work on the weekend (at least those with full time jobs), so the usual morning vote on the weekend doesn't resemble the weekday morning vote which contains a lot of older voters who have full time jobs. The presence of RDR2 in the could have also hurt SSBU's morning and day vote in the 3-way poll as RDR2 had a good morning and day vote.

We just got our upcoming game poll for this month and KH3 seems to be doing okay right now.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/poll/7475-

Given how weak this month is besides KH3 and RE2, around 50% for KH3 seems about expected.

PS4 does have an ownership advantage over the Switch right now. The most recent ownership polls have the PS4 around 69% ownership and the Switch around 58%. I guess this could give the PS4 an advantage in today's poll, but even the PS4's ownership advantage over the Switch couldn't save the PS4 GotY poll from getting less votes than the Switch GotY poll.

The only other reason for today's result is how people are interpreting the poll question. The poll question for System of the Year is a very open-ended question, with no right or wrong way to interpret what the poll is asking you about. Here's 3 potentially viable reasons on how someone decided which option to vote for:

1. Voting for the system you played the most in 2018

Pretty self-explanatory. This makes the most sense as to how someone chose which option to vote for in the poll. If the PS4 actually won today's poll, this is probably why it happened.

2. Voting for the system that is currently your overall favorite right now

Although this does seem similar to the first option, I could see a way in which someone's favorite system wasn't the same system they played the most in 2018. Someone who owns both a PS4 and Switch could be a situation where they spend more time playing games on the PS4 because of the larger overall game library to choose from, but consider the Switch to be their favorite system because it has more of the games they actually love.

Some people also use their PS4 and Switch for totally different purposes, like the PS4 to cover multiplatform releases while the Switch is used for the exclusive games. This could lead to someone accumulating more playtime on the PS4 than the Switch even they don't love the PS4's games as much as the Switch's games. The PS4 is also more likely to have more of the 60+ hour masterpiece games (like RDR2) than a system such as the Switch which is more focused on the Nintendo exclusive games that are generally much quicker to beat. So you might not accumulate as much playtime on Switch compared to PS4 among people who own both systems.

3. Voting for the system that had the strongest game library in 2018

I do see this as the least likely reason for someone to base their vote on, but I could see some people acknowledging the overall strength of a game's library in a given year (2018 in this case) even if they don't own the system. It could be possible for an Xbox One or Switch only owner to go and research the notable games that came out on PS4 and other systems in 2018 and agree that the PS4 had the better games in 2018 even if they don't own a PS4 themselves.

Another thing is that the poll question itself includes the text "BEST OF 2018", which could imply voting for the system that had the best overall game library for that year.

PS4 has Spider-Man red dead and GoW.

Those alone had way more votes than smash and whatever else switch had.

Yes, PS4 does have those games, but the vote totals of the PS4 GotY poll suggest otherwise. Simply looking at the PS4 and Switch GotY polls would suggest the PS4 poll had the better overall group of games, but the vote totals suggest otherwise. If that PS4 field was really better what the Switch had, the vote totals of the PS4 poll should have been higher than the Switch poll. What actually happened is the PS4 poll got about 400 votes less than the Switch poll.

So despite the Switch GotY poll getting better vote totals than the PS4 GotY poll and the GotY going to the Switch game, we're seeing PS4 beating out the Switch in today's System of the Year poll. This is a very unusual result indeed.

The Switch GotY poll getting better vote totals than the PS4 GotY poll would suggest the Switch poll had a stronger overall group of games in its poll compared to the PS4 poll.

Around 8 years ago I met another user here, GenesisSaga. She was a fan of things I was and enjoyed the board games here most know as Save Mys.

Save Mys, huh? I'll let you know there's another Save My Pokemon currently in progress right now. I know you participated in the last Save My Pokemon back in 2015/2016.
