review starlight: wow, this show was way better than I was expecting. Wasn't super hyped about first few episodes but things just always get more and more interesting and I think a lot of the characters have reasonable yet unique character flaws that get tied extremely well into the story. there's only really one or two choices for "best" girl but I'd have a hard time picking a worst since none of them are really bad or boring which is something I haven't seen in a long time.

Mostly though I'm impressed by the planning and framing of scenes. Like, the angles, the cuts, what they show, what they don't, the constant nods and callbacks to previous scenes not in a explicitly mentioned way but just in how the shot itself is laid out. I don't think I've ever watched anything that does that this well and it just really makes me feel the amount of care and effort put into the visuals even though there are cases that look "bad" from a technical animation standpoint.

I'm a little cheesed by the subs I had not translating a lot of the songs, since they're fairly relevant and it's a dumb thing to miss. Also sometimes the ED was subbed and sometimes it wasn't even when it was the same song |:. My number one TL bother was that I think something was really lost in TL when , a recurring line, became "Let us compete in song and dance". Sure, can mean that sort of competing like that, but then you lose what I think they were really going for (especially as the story progresses and the giraffe emphasizes this word more and more) is that can mean to steal/take something from someone and thus has more of a "stealing from each other" meaning in this case.

also gets bonus points for one of the more unique transformation(?) sequences I've seen lol

drafting is a whole different beast altogether. if you are good at drafting, you can potentially always win more prizes than you buy in for, and basically draft endlessly, earning packs and gem reward each time. this is a great way to earn a steady stream of packs and cards, if you have the mettle for it. but it takes an intimate knowledge of the set you are drafting, and of drafting strategies in general.

upside: earn a bunch of packs
downside: have to play boros mirrors 24/7

the merfolk deck feels to me like by far the strongest of the default decks so I wouldn't worry too hard about that. also yes sometimes you will just get totally rolled over and feel completely outclassed but that's how it is

I would say probably the most common reason newer players end up with bad decks is just not being able to evaluate which cards are good and they think bad cards are actually good. Which is something you gradually pick up on with experience.

Other than that a good tip I guess is to try to have a good gradual mana curve. Don't be the guy who plays nothing but lands for 5 turns and then dies before playing his cool 6 mana dinosaur or whatever. Also don't be the guy who plays a billion 1/1 for 1s on the first 3 turns and then can't win because he can't get through a single stronger creature

As far as what colours to play: certain colours / deck archetypes are definitely better than others but at the level of "can I play well against people at low ranking of mtga" you can just play whatever colour pairing you want. Or mono colour. Or even tricolour I suppose but I wouldn't go above that. Personally I like blue/red. Your taste may vary. The game gives you a bunch of 2 colour decks over the first week or so of playing so you can check them all out and see what you like

I have way too many of these. cowboy bebop, evangelion, code geass are the three extremely obvious ones that jump to mind right away. Then there's also longer running / older stuff like naruto, bleach, HxH, dragonball, none of which I've seen more than a single episode of. quickly looking at that mal by popularity, I'm also missing attack on titan, FMA, one punch man, SAO, and really probably about 75%+ of the top 50 <_<

on a completely opposite note to what I didn't watch, I just started watching revue starlight. The subs I found (dunno if there are better ones out there) didn't bother translating the songs which strikes me as the epitome of laziness. Also cal I find it extra funny now you not knowing lots of things reference utena since I can just tell this show is going to have like 50 utena references

I've found I'm less tied to specific genres and more that I'm just reluctant to try any new games unless I hear good stuff about it from some of the 15-20 people I think actually have good taste in games

chrono isn't the only character who's kinda plain and featureless, just the most obvious example. I'd go so far as to say the only really interesting character in the game is magus

the game rides a lot more on its interesting setting than its characters

hell temple overall feels pretty silly to me, too. It's an absurd area mostly full of difficult platforming challenges in an engine extremely poorly suited to anything even remotely resembling platforming. I honestly don't really fault it for anything though because considering how ridiculous the entrance requirements are I think the contents are allowed to be just as ridiculous

axe is pretty good for the big overhead reach and just generally very high damage for when you get it. knife is nice because of how fast it attacks, good for just tanking early minibosses and mashing. I'm not a big fan of the other two though

I personally didn't even realize the maps tessellated the way they do so I was nowhere near solving it. The only thing I noticed was that they're in the back side of the associated area (there's actually a hint for this ingame but it's really badly translated to the point of being useless) and I basically just wandered around spamming them in every room until they activated and I went to get the next one

Okay, so Gate of Time is just some weird bonus dungeon that has one item - one of those do-nothing (though probably with some hidden combo effect) software items. I also found a hidden exit to Tower of the Goddess, that doesn't seem to do anything special when you get there.

it's mostly just some throwback/reference to the original la mulana, which was a PC game from mid 2000s that was made to look like an MSX game

She was definitely a hard fight (especially since I got myself stuck in hard mode), but I also found it to be a nearly 100% fair fight, unlike Baphomet and Palenque where you're at the mercy of the RNG to a fairly noticable extent.

the rotating lasers do like... 200 damage? granted they're pretty telegraphed so you can just dodge them most of the time but if you mess something up a little you just instantly die lol. palenque is a super short fight so you can just dps race and probably win which is good because yeah that fight is garbage

Yeah, I gave up on trying to do it without a guide shortly after Viy. Though I still try to use one only when I'm really out of ideas (other than "go everywhere, try everything", because I don't have the patience for that).

I personally found the second game to be a lot less obtuse about its hints. It's still tricky and still has its fair share of stumpers but overall I feel like it's a lot more clear what's intended to be done next at any given time
