It's definitely provocative and no shock that it created backlash. I have heard a similar argument that can be summarized as there is no such thing as an accident. The idea is that you can not be in a car crash, for example, without having decided on some level that you either wanted to be in one or you just didn't care if you were in one. In other words, you would have chosen to do everything necessary to not be in that situation, if that was a priority for you. It's an idea I bounce around and examine once in a while, but I wouldn't offer it up in public. Kanye obviously has fuck you money, so he can afford to say whatever comes to mind.

I think this 'Butterfly Effect' defense, while based in some logic, is completely pointless. If we accept that any action is morally justifiable if it can lead indirectly to positive outcomes, then every single action is morally 'right' because you can't ever 100% prove that an action is completely unconnected to a future event. It also assumes that any good can only happen as a direct result of specific tragedies, which is not always the case. In many cases, the positive result could be achieved without the tragedy.

Just to be clear, I think Columbus committed acts that were very clearly terrible and apparently even his contemporaries disapproved when they found out what he was doing. However, I don't think it's false to say that certain horrible acts in the past eventually led to some arguably positive results much later in the future, or rather our present time. Of course we also can't see into the future, so it's not so black and white as to what these chain of events will mean for our world and our descendants.

I mostly agree, but I still recognize that it's unwise to insult people about whatever they consider off limits, whether it's sacred or taboo to even discuss. You can get into a lot of trouble or possibly even a fight if you use the N-word outside of the privacy of your home, for example, and there are people who would gladly use the government to force you and me to use preferred pronouns, if they could get away with it.
