What's going to happen in a couple decades when the people who made those early games start dying out, will the series go on without them?

And we're going to die before we get to see the conclusion of some of our favorite stories :(

I'm still here, you know.

And yes, I have played it a bit. There's nothing in there right now that was worth either the amount of hubris thrown around at the launch trailer nor the amount of controversy generated overall.

They "added" a War Story? You mean they kept back content in favor of seeming like they're actually releasing new things every month.

You know why so many games are moving to this game's as a service model? So they can lure people in with promises of more content in the future. At least with the season passes you were guaranteed at least four to five map packs since you paid for it. There is absolutely nothing you're entitled to in Battlefield 5 outside of what's on the disc, and if EA decides to abort the post-launch content over it, there's nothing that can be done.

You say the other Battlefield games had a shaky launch, but the only one that comes to mind is Battlefield 4, and that game had plenty of content on launch to the point where they could fix the nonsense and shape it up to be one of the best games in the series. Battlefield 5 is gonna have to put out all of its content with the bugs and glitches lingering in the background, and the terrible sales certainly aren't gonna be a great motivator to get anything done fast.

Oh, and Battlefield Hardline and 1 released without any major issues. I know, I was at all three launches.

Hardline wasn't a main series Battlefield, and it was relatively simple for what it presented. I enjoyed it for a little bit but it didn't have the depth of the other games (I did enjoy the heist mode though, I thought that was cool).

Battlefield 1 certainly had launch problems (especially with server connectivity) and had basic features missing that had been in 4 which were introduced later (for instance, customizable emblems, ribbons, clan support, etc.). Not to mention the initial selection of weapons was terrible (each class had basically three or four weapons max, with the unlockables being variations of those weapons). It also shipped with 9 maps (Battlefield 5 launched with 5, so not a huge difference there).

Literally every previous Battlefield had problems at launch, oftentimes related to server connectivity and server finding functionality. Battlefield 2 particularly stands out - it was the first in the series to have a promotion system, but the point scaling was ridiculous. It had server connection issues for a good two months, and when the patch finally came out that fixed that, it introduced a server-side memory leak which meant you would join a server just fine, play two or three matches, then get disconnected because the server crashed.

You say the terrible sales aren't helping, but it's hard to factor the sales in here when EA has been advertising its Premium subscription service so heavily in conjunction with the BF5 release. And they literally just released a giant patch that addressed many concerns people had.

Darmik posted...
Launching Battlefield 5 without their Battle Royale mode in 2018 was an absolutely stupid move. Typical EA being slow to reacting to new trends.

I hate Battle Royale so I'm personally fine with that :\ Also it ties in to their rotating seasonal content approach. Maybe not the best idea to postpone it when touting it rather heavily during pre-release marketing, though.

Honestly the whole drug/hynotism aspect made the cult not make any sense to me. It's a doomsday cult. They're obviously not trying to save everyone, and brutally slaughter people who they determine are sinners, so what is the point drugging people into joining? They need actual believers to accomplish what they are doing

There's a cycle to it, and there are multiple aspects to it, like they needed a highly trained military force to instill order and discipline over people, the druggies could be happy cannon fodder, etc. There were three aspects to how the cult was keeping people under control.

The timing of it all was obviously for dramatic effect and was kind of cheesy. The rest of it, "they knew what was coming", I think was still a great thing. They knew what was coming because they were paying attention to global events and the warning signs. Some of those are also available to you as a player, especially if you listen to the radio.

The cult leader literally just takes advantage of the nuke at the end, in no way did he forsee that shit or the cult would have preached a very different message.

he times it down to the second you try to apprehend him. he had the cult build underground fallout shelters. he knew it was coming down to the second man. the only way i can see them salvaging it is if in the new one, you figure out joseph had infiltrated the right ppl in all the nuclear-capable govts and forced the apocalypse. that's the only way, i think

I just loved how topical it was honestly. A lot of people in the modern world have become complacent about nuclear weapons even though they still pose a very, very real threat to our safety and the global community's safety. I like that you can hear about this outside conflict on the radios foreshadowing what is coming, and I like that you're screwed no matter what. Everyone wants to put it in the perspective of the player and player character and think "it's not fair that I didn't get to kill the cult and save the princess in the castle" but that's kind of the whole point - you're remaining oblivious to the greater dark shadow hanging over the world and the game is forcing you to confront that.

That's why I liked it so much. I could agree with the idea that there should have been one final option to kill or save Joseph at the end (maybe after the credits rolled), though.

I'm not saying it's a perfect game. I do wish there was more depth to the weapon specializations, that there were more assignments (I completed most of the non-weapon/class ones in one week), etc.

But it's a good Battlefield game and this has been a pretty decent Battlefield game launch. As was pointed out, look at the launch fiascos of previous games. And a lot of previous Battlefield games were missing features at launch, too.

And they literally just released a new map for BF5, new single player War Story, and a dozen pages of patch notes that I'm just reading through now. They made a lot of changes to the airplane mechanics, made top gunner positions on tanks more attractive (you can duck and still blind fire so you're not completely exposed) and made changes to handheld RPG weapons... and that's just in the first couple pages.

First phase of vehicle customization is launching.

@Peter_Griffin33 - Delayed all airplane spawns in pre-round by 30 seconds as an intermediate measure to prevent bombers spawn killing players.

"Made various fixes to Special Assignments." I'm curious what that entails...

It's not fair to compare this to Battlefront 2, which was destined to fail from the beginning from an extremely unbalanced progression system linked specifically to microtransactions. MTX were the basis of virtually every mechanic in that game and when they were disabled, it made everything else feel ridiculously grindy. The modes were also rather boring and there was a bad weapon selection.

It also wasn't made by the primary Battlefield team...
