Because he's a good man? He had some trouble with minorities because he was slow to acknowledge that leftist economic policy is insufficient for addressing racial inequality without being paired with equally progressive social policy.
But, again, Senator Sanders is a good man. He listens. He learns. That's more than most politicians.

Do the States not do this

no, because it has been politicized.

Democrats coined Voter Identification as "Voter Suppression" and that it is how it's described in the news.

They take this strange race angle. They claim that a lot African Americans don't have any form of identification. That they don't have a home, a proof of residence, an ID, or any proof that they exist, meaning that they can't drive, don't have a job, don't buy alcohol or anything for people over 18 etc.

I literally have never met a single person, let alone a black person, who didn't have some form of ID.

I have no idea who they are even talking about. Like a group of black people completely off the grid in the deep south or some shit?

It's very strange and it's basically the mainstream opinion here in America that these mythical people without any proof of who they are exist.

Because that's literally the stated goal of people implementing these laws?

We battled to get voter ID on the ballot for the November 16 election, Wisconsin Attorney General Brad Schimel, who defended the law in court, told conservative radio host Vicki McKenna on April 12. How many of your listeners really honestly are sure that Sen. [Ron] Johnson was going to win reelection or President Trump was going to win Wisconsin if we didnt have voter ID to keep Wisconsins elections clean and honest and have integrity?
That's the Attorney General of Wisconsin.

"Voter ID, which is going to allow Governor Romney to win the state of Pennsylvania: done,"
-Pennsylvania House Majority Leader Mike Turzai(R), 2012

"Yeah, I think a little bit," Gleason said. "We probably had a better election. Think about this: We cut Obama by 5 percent, which was big. A lot of people lost sight of that. He beat McCain by 10 percent; he only beat Romney by 5 percent. And I think that probably photo ID helped a bit in that."
-Pennsylvania GOP Chairman Robert Gleason
https://tinyurl.com/y8mkpbjz
That's not even all of them. All but the first one come from a single article(it has video!) Like, they straight-up say these laws are designed to help Republicans win more elections.

But, let's ask France!

elections-legislatives.frThe requirements are fairly limited :

- Age: 18 years;
- French citizenship ; EU citizens residing in France may, however, require to be registered on the supplementary electoral roll to vote in municipal and/or European elections.

Disfranchisement is limited to persons under guardianship and to persons serving certain criminal sentences. When disfranchisement isn't part of the sentence, detained persons may vote by proxy
How does one register to vote in France?

Registration is automatic with coming of age.

Voters may choose to be registered on the electoral roll:

-of their official domicile;
-or of a commune where they have been paying local taxes for at least the last 5 years;
-or of a place of residence if the residence has been actual and continuous for at least the last 6 months;
-or of a commune where civil servants/military personnel have been mandatorily posted.

Is voting compulsory ?

Voting is not compulsary.
How does one vote ?

French voters, once registered, are send a voter's card providing them the address of their polling station, at least 3 days prior to the election. In the smaller municipalities (with a population under 3,500 people), voters may cast their votes when presenting their voter's card only. In the more populated municipalities, a recognized identity document ( i.e. French identity card, driving licence or passport) is required and presenting a voter's card being optional.

Voting is strictly personal and strictly secret : it is an offense to try and control voting choice. It is even an offense to try and know one's voting choice.

Thus polling stations are equipped to protect voting freedom and secrecy :
At the polling station, upon presentation of voter's card and/or identity document, voters are issued an opaque envelope made of recycled paper.

There is one ballot paper per candidate.

All ballot papers are on one same table. Voters must take at least two different ballot papers prior to proceeding into the opaque polling booth where they fold a ballot paper into the envelope. They do not seal the envelope. Once their names are checked by the electoral officer, voters are allowed to put their ballot envelope in the ballot box and sign the electoral register.

If you're wondering about how much it costs to get a French I.D. , it runs 35 euros, which is a little more than half what it cost for me to get a driver's license from the state of Connecticut.

Yeah, that's why I asked that question.

Also I wanted to discuss these two events which I personally never heard about in school.

the 1994 taiwannese film, To Live, provides a useful contextualization of each event.

fwiw, I voted Cultural Revolution, since your question was about morality, and not net human impact. The Great Leap Forward definitely caused more human suffering.

I voted the Cultural Revolution too, for this reason. If you're making moral judgments, then intent matters quite a bit. Particularly, the Great Leap Forward was partly modeled off of Stalin's Five-Year Plans, the sheer brutality of which was not nearly as well appreciated at the time(and likely would have been dismissed by the CCP as Western propaganda, in any case). What made the Great Leap Forward so disastrous was profound ignorance, a lack of communication/trust and stubbornness. It wasn't malicious in any way, whereas the Cultural Revolution was essentially Mao's way of muscling out and punishing everyone who had (in his mind) slighted him and cut him out of the loop(mostly as a result of the Great Leap Forward). It was 100% malicious in intent.

Why not, a return to actual federalism?
More state autonomy and less federal dominance may actually serve to lessen division, via intentionally dividing.

The last time states made a serious effort to assert their autonomy, a civil war was fought. Right now, you literally have people saying combatants on that side were traitors, even though federal oversight and reach was not really a thing in the way that it is now. I dont think most people would be open to actual state autonomy, especially now that so many are pushing for more and more federal government involvement in their lives.

Not to mention that state identities aren't much of a thing anymore. Virtually everyone identifies as an American first, not as a Texan or New Yorker or a Californian.
And, of course, we already did the "loose confederation" thing. It went so well it got replaced within 20 years without any serious disagreement.

Basically, the issue is this: there's a growing consensus that our government is illegitimate. Republicans have very much become a white identity party which views Democrats as inherently illegitimate. This explains their treatment of the last two Democratic presidents: since they both lost the white vote, their victories cannot have been legitimate. Thus, the drive to, wherever possible, restrict the voting access of non-whites and codify Republican power into law.

These efforts, of course, have badly exacerbated our already undemocratic system of government. The Founders were chiefly concerned with codifying their political dominance and getting 13 very different and very independent states to agree to form a federation. Nowadays; however, the states are not what divides us: ideology is. Functional democracies do not award all of the power to the party that wins a minority of votes, but ours did. In 3 of the last 7 presidential elections, the electoral college winner did not win a majority of the popular vote. In 2 of those cases, they did not even win a plurality. The Democratic Party consistently receives more votes in aggregate in House and Senate races, but is a minority in both chambers of Congress(the former isn't even in accordance with our Constitution's undemocratic design). To win the House, the Democrats must earn(again, in aggregate) 7-8% more votes than the Republicans. As population becomes more concentrated in urban areas, that will only get worse. The Senate, if trends continue, will soon have a permanent Republican majority elected by 30% or less of the entire population.
Basically, there's a growing awareness on the left of just how rigged the system is. Making D.C. and Puerto Rico states would help, as would packing the courts and expanding voting rights, but A)It's unlikely the Democrats have the political will or will obtain the necessary power to do so and B) It would do nothing to address the inherent inequities of our present system. Oh, and of course the Republicans would view it at all as a disgusting, illegitimate power-grab.

As our governmental system's legitimacy decays, the present divisions will worsen. Barring a radical change, the prognosis is grim.

Yeah, you're right. The country that produced the 2nd most carbon emissions in 2016 definitely can't do anything about this(http://www.globalcarbonatlas.org/en/CO2-emissions) and the absence of the premier global power in all efforts to do anything about it has no effect at all, I'm sure.

As per the topic, I'd say the Democratic politicians quoted were being realistic given the likelihood that the Republicans will retain a Senate majority and the fact that the president believes this is all a Chinese hoax or whatever, but then there's also no reason to believe that they have any intention of doing anything ambitious policy-wise.

"A DNA test is useless to determine tribal citizenship. Current DNA tests do not even distinguish whether a persons ancestors were indigenous to North or South America," Cherokee Nation Secretary of State Chuck Hoskin Jr. said. "Sovereign tribal nations set their own legal requirements for citizenship, and while DNA tests can be used to determine lineage, such as paternity to an individual, it is not evidence for tribal affiliation. Using a DNA test to lay claim to any connection to the Cherokee Nation or any tribal nation, even vaguely, is inappropriate and wrong. It makes a mockery out of DNA tests and its legitimate uses while also dishonoring legitimate tribal governments and their citizens, whose ancestors are well documented and whose heritage is proven.
