Topic | Don't bitch about politics if you don't vote next Tuesday |
ElatedVenusaur 10/31/18 11:30:02 AM #14 | Voting really isn't that impactful(I mean, unless you do it A LOT, like us Soros-financed supervoters). Particularly when you account for crap like gerrymandering. If you care, there are much more important things you can do than show up and fill out a ballot. I mean, you should still do that, but, just saying. |
Topic | Just voted straight Democrat |
ElatedVenusaur 10/30/18 4:31:36 PM #55 | To be fair, it's hard to love the Democrats, since the great majority of Democratic Politicians are mealy-mouthed, lukewarm types. The kind of people who aren't sure what we should do, but certain we shouldn't do much. The kind of people who are maybe nice in a broad sense, but spend most of their time around people who have lots of money and think exactly like they do. |

Topic | any ny giants fans here? |
ElatedVenusaur 10/29/18 8:17:01 PM #4 | I mean, Barkley is a stud, but they went all-in on Eli being good again and he went and regressed even further*. Plus, they paid Nate Solder all that money to attempt to shore up the offensive line(good thinking!) but he turned into a pumpkin(damn...) The Giants now need a quarterback in the worst way, but the good news is that they seem on-pace for a top 5 pick and the Beckham/Barkley tandem should help a rookie out considerably. *I'm a Bills fan, so I'm an expert on bad quarterbacking and worse personnel decisions, but not quite master-level. |

ElatedVenusaur 10/27/18 11:26:11 AM #61 | Broseph_Stalin posted... The OJ case happened a couple years after the Rodney King beating and Latasha Harlins murder. His legal team wanted to exploit that. One of the detectives involved in the case was caught on tape using racial slurs against black people and plead the fifth when asked if he planted evidence. Yeah, the O.J. case is an excellent example of how damaging poor police conduct is: the rampant distrust created by the LAPD's conduct towards black people in general helped enable a guilty man to get away with murder. |

Topic | Is Victoria 2 the best Strategy Game ever made? |
ElatedVenusaur 10/26/18 12:02:16 AM #6 | It is a horrible mess of a game that does a poor job of communicating anything. The economy code is apparently the programming equivalent of the Voynich Manuscripts. The late 19th-century is a sea of blood as communists and fascists see-saw back and forth in whichever major(s) have lost their armies. The economy dies if India is liberated or China civilizes. The best way to progress is by being as horribly oppressive as possible. In short, it is perfect. |

Topic | So are the guards in football pretty much just meat shields |
ElatedVenusaur 10/25/18 11:48:43 PM #4 | Offensive linemen in general exist pretty much solely to block defensive players. It's illegal, for example, for them to catch forward passes or to be downfield unless a ball-carrier is across the line of scrimmage. There's a lot involved in it, and different offensive schemes utilize them in different ways(different blocking schemes, pulls, etc.). In short, it's very technically-involved, but there is little glory or recognition unless you're a left tackle(traditionally responsible for protecting the QB's "blind-side" on pass plays). |
Topic | Stellaris Megacorp expansion announced |
ElatedVenusaur 10/25/18 3:54:10 PM #8 | https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/index.php?threads/stellaris-dev-diary-131-megacorporations.1125380/ Today's dev diary on how playing a megacorp works. A few major take-aways: 1) More of a megacorps pops produce trade value 2) Megacorps have their own civic picks. If you don't have the Megacorp expansion, the old generic civic will still be available 3) Megacorps suffer more from going over the empire size cap 4) Megacorps can open branch offices on the worlds of other empire's. This is mutually beneficial, and scales according to how populous the world is. Megacorps can build special buildings on these worlds which primarily benefit them. 5) Even if a civ cuts off trade with a megacorp, their branch offices remain open and must be removed via a special CB(Expropriation). Victory awards the attacker with a lump sum of energy credits based on how many branch offices were removed. 6) Megacorps cannot have normal vassals, only subsidiaries. Subsidiaries are mostly independent, but must join their overlord in all of their wars and pay them 25% of their energy income. There are two special Megacorp civics: 1)Criminal Heritage(cannot be removed) Yup, you can play as a gang or cartel, and get your Jabba on! A) Branch offices work differently: a crime syndicate simply opens up shop without asking anyone's permission, and makes profit from crime. They can build buildings to increase crime(and thus their profits). The host civ can either just accept the crime, or use law enforcement to deal with the problem. 2)Gospel of the Masses You can be a Megachurch and suck those suckers dry in the name(s) of your God(s). They generally increase Spiritualist ethics attraction in addition to normal Megacorp stuff, so they could be quite the pain for Materialists. And, of course, you can combine this with the above. |

ElatedVenusaur 10/24/18 11:24:13 PM #27 | https://imgur.com/a/kQlHgRt I'm France. Scotland, Wales, and Aragon are my allies. Going for Better than Napoleon(Control Berlin, Vienna, and Moscow). England and Castile have been appropriately crippled and will be consumed as convenient, but the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth is doing well and Austria is just ridiculous. Never seen Austria do this well: Burgundian Inheritance fired, and they inherited Hungary, but they've also been beating the Ottomans consistently. Would probably be rolling them if I hadn't intervened. Their armies are pretty good too. Did I mention The Reformation is fizzling? Also, why the hell don't the Ottomans do this poorly when I play Ethiopia? I'm used to seeing them have Mesopotamia and most of Hungary by now! |

Topic | What are some historical inaccuracies that are taken as absolute facts? |
ElatedVenusaur 10/24/18 11:18:47 AM #26 | Oh, I thought of one: that Atahualpa and his army approached Pizarro's men unarmed. That's some "innocent savage" BS. Atahualpa saw the Spanish as interlopers that needed to be taught a (harsh) lesson(they had already sacked a number of villages and killed a bunch of people, because conquistadors), so he was going to slaughter them. He and his generals were encouraged by reports from scouts about the Spanish hiding in buildings, not realizing that what the Spanish were actually doing was setting up cannons. The cannons(once fired) caused the Incan force to panic and Atahualpa was trapped amidst the crush of bodies and seized by Pizarro. Atahualpa was only even in the area in the first place because it was his power-base in a succession struggle that he had literally JUST won. If you wrote that in a novel, people would tell you your plot was unbelievable and relied too much on sheer coincidence. |

Topic | What are some historical inaccuracies that are taken as absolute facts? |
ElatedVenusaur 10/23/18 11:20:44 PM #5 | Hell, a lot of people don't even acknowledge or realize the presence of the rest of the Greek army at Thermopylae, let alone not understanding how the Spartans actually fought. While we're on the topic of Ancient Greece and the Greek city-states, Athens and Sparta hog all the air time. There were plenty of other prominent city-states in Hellas proper: Corcyra, Corinth, Rhodes, and, most of all, Thebes. Thebes, of course, actually became by far the pre-eminent power in Greece after the Peloponnesian War. And Syracuse, while distant from Hellas proper, was a regional power that was able to hold its own with Carthage and Rome for quite a while. |

Topic | Who are your five least favorite senators |
ElatedVenusaur 10/23/18 8:15:51 PM #8 | Schumer and Manchin are definitely my least favorites. I expect Republicans to be terrible, and they basically never surprise me(though I admit I find the Jeff Flakes and Ben Sasses of the world more contemptible than average). However, Schumer, and, to a lesser extent Manchin, are horribly damaging garbage heaps who are/will be road-blocks in terms of doing anything good in spite of being members of the "good" party. Like, I seriously believe Schumer would be perfectly happy running a controlled-opposition in a one-party state. |

ElatedVenusaur 10/23/18 8:11:53 PM #44 | To put a 28% chance into perspective for some, you have a 25% chance of getting two heads in a row if you flip a coin twice. It's really not all that unlikely. |
