It gets hard on this site because intelligent and honest discussion is rare because of egos. People rather have filler time waster conversation where nothing is learned, and not to admit to their faults. I can't tell who is geniune and who is lying. After arguing with Neo-Nazis and people that are just stubborn as all fuck, I guess I lost sight of that, and just assumed people who just disagree on such issues are just trolls and bigots. It became so easy because that was true so often. That scares me honestly. Been awhile I actually had to really rethink alot of my thinking like this.

And also, to get back to the kids, I believe you that you've deal with some real trauma, but you have no idea what those other kids have been through. Dark comedy is a very real coping mechanism, and that kid you judge for making a racist joke might have been through worse shit than you have. The ability to laugh through bad times is incredibly powerful and cathartic, and it doesn't mean those kids don't have equally meaningful opinions. You don't want to go through life thinking you're more "woke" than the people around you because you've had it tough while simultaneously assuming they don't have problems too simply because they don't wear it on their sleeve. Being super serious isn't automatically a sign of maturity.

You can't fix humanity by trying to force the behavior you think is right out of people. It's been tried many, many times, and it always ends poorly. Once you open that box, you also need to be ready for when someone inevitably decides that your behavior is bad, because nobody ever thinks their weapon will be used against them. Everyone who advocates for this sort of approach always does so with the assumption that they'll be "safe" from their own machinations. They never are.

People need something to rally around. If it's not skin color, it's religion, If it's not religion, it's state. If it's not state, it's an ideal, or a common enemy. Absent a strong common base to form group cohesion, people will ALWAYS form tribes. And if you try to force one group into the light to shame them into becoming another group, that breeds resentment which leads to actual atrocities and not just mean words in a chat. Once you can unite a group around something, barriers fall and you'll get the kind of environment you want, but you'll never completely eliminate competition.

The only effective solution isn't to expose bigots to criticism. It's to expose bigots to the object of their bigotry. Humanizing "the other" has been by far the most effective way to weaken tribal boundaries, but ultimately only because they realize said "other" happens to share the same ideals they do. Again: you need that foundation.

That's tough in modern times, because many people (such as yourself, I would wager), say they want unity but hate the idea of actually uniting around anything. Religion is bad. Patriotism is bad. Nationalism is bad. Western ideals are "colonialist, imperial oppression". Even the bill of rights is problematic.

Globalism is too broad to actually unite anyone, because moral relativism has taken hold and ruined the ability for people to get behind anything. Every ideal is as good as every other ideal and you're not allowed to say one is better than the other, so you have nothing to really get behind. The result is lazy half-assed unity that falls apart when a more cohesive group (due to religion, nationalism, etc) rolls in takes over because nobody has the energy to fight back.

We're animals, not deities. Our entire genetic composition from hundreds of thousands of years has bred a species that thrives on competition. Without something to compete against, we fall apart. That's just reality. Just look at this study on mice and you'll see the terrifying parallels:

The other problem is it forces you into a situation where you can't avoid rush hour. Before we went 9/80 I was able to get in a bit late and leave a bit late, dodging rush hour entirely on both ends. Now, I either get in a bit late and end up staying way too late, or I drive in during rush hour to avoid the evening commute, or I get in early and get stuck in evening rush out. It basically doubles my commute time.

Part of it honestly is that the American public education system is terrible. No one has ever actually challenged these kids on any of their beliefs, so they don't know how to defend them. They don't even really know what their political beliefs are yet. It's completely divorced from the reality that kids have been saying edgy things since the dawn of time as a form of rebellion against authority combined with creating a barrier to entry for outsiders who can't see through the vulgarity. It's a fundamental misunderstanding of why they're saying those things, and the conclusion he comes to is to simply judge them as lesser. Yea, actually, it's better to be a racist off in a corner with your friends where it doesn't hurt anybody as opposed to being a racist and getting your opinions published in major media, praised, teaching them to impressionable young people who take you at your word, and actively pushing for societal change towards your views. I almost never have friends my age. Even now, theu are older than me or I stay in my dorm room.

Not having any friends explains why you can't understand why those kids were acting that way. You're culturally isolated, looking in as if you have some sort of higher level insight into their behaviors, but you simply just don't understand them, and you're judging them based on that superficial, ignorant observation.

Nah, wrong take away. I took none of it seriously which is why I am not offended about it. It just taught me alot about how things are the way they are.

People ignorantly vote against their best wishes all the time. most of them probably don't even understand what you said...and you could say it to them right now and they still wouldn't realize it because their preconceived notions outweigh any potential common sense.

Out of curiosity, do you think this applies to democrats too? I see the "people are too stupid to vote in their own best interests" line I lot, but it seems exclusively to be applied to republican voters.
