it was a 50k wedding

Damn who paid for it?

We both kind of did. He paid for some (with his line of credit), I paid for some and my family gave $10k.

I ended up stuck with $14k in debt though because all the deposits were in my name and on my card. And he was a deadbeat with no job and a secret $100k debt he hid from me

The funniest memory I have is my best friend answering all the calls from our vendors. She would reply in the most casual tone Im sorry but there will be no wedding. Why? Because the groom is an asshole, thats why

The bakery was pissed let me tell you. They made a 4 layer cake for 150 people for nothing. The owner almost yelled at me but when he heard my voice, he laid off

Oh yeah and I also received $10k in gifts from family who couldnt make it. I gave it back to them though

for nothing?

I would have frozen that cake and eaten the whole thing myself if my wedding got canceled

I know. Looking back, we should have just brought it home. My mom had a bbq in our yard with like 50 of our guests the day we were supposed to have the wedding. We could have used it lol. But I didnt even want to see it.

That's insane. Did you just cut him off entirely after that? Or was there a period of him trying to woo you back?

Pretty much. We had some back and forth over like 2 weeks but then I eventually told him to go fuck himself (or rather Vas te faire fotre lol). He never really saw that what he did was wrong and was still siding with his mom.

Then I just cut him off. He tried telling me I left some things at his house one time. So he came by my new apartment and started peaking in, commenting how nice it looked. It was obvious he was waiting for me to invite him in. I took my things and shut the door on him (in a casual, ok bye now! kind of way). He tried telling me he had more of my things a month later and I told him to keep it.

Then a year later he emailed me happy birthday. On the wrong day lol. I never responded

I'm surprised you made it as close to the wedding as you did, but it's good that you didn't go through with it. Some people might give in to the whole sunk cost idea and be like, well, we made it this far, so we may as well stick it out. But obviously that's not a path you want to go down.

Honestly it was stupid, but the pressure of having a big expensive wedding is what kept me around. I was more worried about being embarrassed (Im middle eastern and they love to gossip).

Once the wedding was off the table, I was finally free. I cried over the embarrassment of it all. But I never cried over the actual break up. I wish I could go back and slap myself in the face for letting it get to that point. It was a miracle his mom did what she did and ultimately saved me

I'm also curious how you planned a $50k wedding with a guy you were clearly nearing your last straws with.

Several reasons. One I was only 23 when we got engaged, after dating 7 months. So we had a long year and a half engagement. He hid a lot from me and his real self only started emerging the last 6 months. I was super naive. Also my mom was in bridezilla mode and was pushing me to make it big and expensive. Though she knew her side of the family were going to gift us big $$$$

Holy shit. How'd that go down? 2 days before the ceremony

It started 5 days before technically. We had rehearsal at the church. Then his mom decided it was a good time to start yelling at my mom. Because my mom decided to buy us a new mattress as a wedding gift. His mom thought it was a stupid present and that my mom should buy us a new AC for his house. Im not even kidding, she legit started screaming at my mom, who started crying.

My ex sided with him mom and I sided with mine. His mom wasnt going to attend our wedding and my ex asked what we postpone it until she came around (it was a 50k wedding and all my family already flew in to a ttend). The fact that he would side with her (and it wasnt the first time) just finally made me realize it was never going to work. So I called it off entirely instead. It happened over a span of a few days

Lmao pretty much exactly that. I have to give him specific quantities, brands, weights, etc. I cant just put cilantro on a list, I need to specify 1 bunch of cilantro. Its too much of a pain so I just do it myself

Up to you. I'm just saying that there are multiple ways for marriages to work, if you're ok with your hubbie not being able to do something as basic as "Get the groceries", so be it.

Hes ok with me not doing something as basic as mow the lawn, or take out the trash so yeah Im ok with it.

-_-

My mom spent the better part of 30+ years training my dad to be a safer driver.

It worked in the end, but it takes a constant berating from her to get him to slowly change over time.

I think you can slowly convert your hubbie to be a shopper.

My dad was the same way when my folks got married.

It takes the wife many years of "Training", but it does work over time.

Think of him like a long term project for you to mold.

If you give up on "Training" him, yeah he'll never change; but if you plug away at it, he'll eventually shape up to the man that you want him to be.

I prefer just accepting that we each have our individual strengths and weaknesses.

For example, hes incredibly handy around the house. He can fix pretty much anything, including car related stuff. He also sets up all the IT and fixes any issues we get. Im not good at any of that and he accepts that about me. He doesnt ask me to watch videos on how to repair stuff. He just does it.

He also mows the lawn and takes out the trash. I have no desire to do any of that. But I do my part, like cooking and groceries since hes pretty much useless when it comes to those things.

I dont think its wise to treat people as projects. It leads to years of resentment imo

I once asked him to get me vanilla yogurt. He came home with no yogurt. I asked why. Apparently I wasnt specific enough on what brand I wanted.

You really need to train him on these basics like shopping. Kind of like training a dog! You got to break him in on shopping for groceries.
