Socialists have always had a race problem, as have, you know, everyone else. In this case I'm not quite in the Tim Wise camp that claims classism is dependent on racism in a sort of one-way relationship, but obviously racism should be treated much more seriously than just as another topic given lip service from white socialists.

My own position is that racism is rooted in class struggle, but there is a dialectical relationship between the two wherein racism serves to further entrench class distinctions, which in turn further entrench racism, etc.

I'm largely on board with this

identity politics can be useful in the context of marginalized groups protesting together, but it can also lead to massive support for imperialists (e.g. Obama) and billionaires (e.g. Oprah). the exploitative nature of capitalism would not be lessened if it were equalized across race/gender lines. it would also not be lessened if every billionaire was a black trans woman.

anyway, focusing specifically on the "gentrifiers" comment: referring to the room as such is a pretty big faux-pas, and extremely unhelpful. if nothing else, blaming gentrification on a demographic rather than on cops, landlords, politicians, and business owners, is reductive and minimizes the role that those groups play in augmenting prices and creating homelessness

If the audience sings along with a Christmas song at the end of a movie taking place on Christmas Eve, centered around a Christmas party, I'd say that makes it a Christmas movie.

Let It Snow makes no mention of Christmas
the plot would not be significantly changed if it was a regular office party

you're incorrect. just because you think they sit there and get free money doesn't make it true. they have to abide by laws and standards set by the community. sure maybe some could get away with sitting on their ass and doing absolutely nothing, but that doesn't mean being a landlord requires no work whatsoever

whether or not landlords can get away with sitting on their asses all day is compeletely irrelevant to my point.

the amount of money landlords make does not depend on the number of hours they work, or the amount of work they do

even in this topic, people are talking about property management companies which allow landlords to turn a profit while minimizing the work they do

landlords are not making money for working. they are making money for owning something.

being a landlord is work

not inherently.

it's still work. I'll use an analogy. Say there's a shift supervisor. He could dink on his phone all day and not do any of the things he's required to do and that would make him a terrible boss. But to do his job correctly is, you guessed it, work.

your analogy is ineffective.

supervisors are still paid a wage, which is predicated on them doing work.

landlords make money because they own property, not because they do anything.

Go to college to learn how to do an in-demand job.

What's considered "in demand" varies every year though, it's far too common for someone end up with a degree that's rendered useless due to changes in the job market, and unless you're actually good at what's being demanded, you have to settle for whatever else you can get instead (or just outright abandon getting a degree at all).

I know in my case that schooling is going to end up fruitless, because I'm neither good at any of the subjects available to me and I won't commit to anything that won't be viable by the time I graduate. At this point I'd be better of quitting and going back to trying to find a minimum wage job (not that I'll ever get one because nobody will hire me anyway).

a degree is not useless just because it won't yield a high-paying job right off the bat. That has never been what degrees are for, and it's really weird that people are expecting it to be that now
