A team named checkmateys needs more pirates

With Widget on the team, I'm certain they'd end up in some kind of Excalibur Cross-Time Capers, likely with swashbuckling pirates or Kitty's Fairy Tales.

As far as alternate take characters, I didn't want to push too far out there and potentially mess up something that worked already. I also wasn't going straight Exiles with them hitting different alternate timelines, but actual Jack Kirby-esque dimension hopping. I understand the docking for lack of further risk, but I'm happy to see it so high up. I like the balance, and did I mess best to make it something original while still having thoughts of things like Exiles, Excalibur, and Justice League Dark. It's got a little bit of everything.

I think the lynchpin of the team is Cypher. It expands just how crazy things can be made as long as there's someone to translate for the team and the reader (and the perils that would come from his absence).

New guy's just the right amount of flavorful. Wonder what his deal is going to be because he's so obviously a Zelos. Also, I know the music is mostly Dragon Quest replays, but I can't help but think about Skies of Arcadia a ton of the time (ESPECIALLY out at sea), and Quest 64 whenever I'm in a church.

Played a little bit last night and this morning. Some thoughts:

Current: Level 7, outside the first city

- The control scheme on keyboard is a bit wonky. I switched around a bunch of key bindings and still have a bit of trickery, especially since it only shows controller buttons for things and the menu keys are a separate set from the movement controls.
- I'm not in love with the main character's purple/green color scheme. I hope there are possible costume variations with future equipment besides the pre-order DQVIII set.
- I really enjoyed seeing everything slowly switching from day to night, and the moonlit shine on the monsters in their encounter dances. Even with my graphics turned down to the lowest possible (and starting highest despite the lag was really cool to see everything... beautiful looking game!), it's still an eyeful.
- I feel like some minor pacing issues are going to frustrate me if they continue throughout the game: long-ass ladder climbs, long battle start-ups, and quick enemy pops in the area. I learned quickly not to try clearing things out, but I really really want to =P

Overall, a little over an hour in, I'm quite enjoying it despite my early complaints. I'm very interested in having the story pick up, but I'm also wary because Trails of Cold Steel (playing right now) has felt pretty slow and this is making that feel twice as fast.

Session 2 begins.

Right now my only issues are a lack of musical variety and none of the enemies thus far having any notable strategies to fight or weaknesses to exploit. But, it's still early

- Also this. The music and enemies are still classic, but it's still very much classic. Nothing really feels new yet. Like, I haven't played much of Breath of the Wild yet, but it does so much to add to the classic and build off it whereas this is just all familiar and nostalgia which isn't bad, but a bit off-putting sometimes.

And after having just beaten Chrono Trigger... well, while I'm really interested in having some level of that kind of battle difficulty (which enemies heal off magic, what magic weakens them, what kind of counter-attacks should I avoid, who to prioritize)... I really, really, really wish I had an auto-attack option right now.

That third hour sucked. Everything before, aside from random-ass arrest of The Shield (it's Baron Corbin GM, makes sense I guess) was good.

Actually, I think I'm just super pissed by the Lashley segment for two big reasons:

1. Kevin Owens came back. To attack someone he wasn't feuding with. In the ring not in a match. For no reason.

2. Kevin Owens came back. Lashley had a segment to himself with stupid ****, but it was working and I was curious to see what Lashley was going to do and Kevin Owens came in out of nowhere, ended the segment with his return, and Lashley just got beat up with no advancement or showing of a character against Jinder or Baron GM. That was dumb.

As far as just those forms?

Gomamon > Gatomon > Gabumon > Tentomon > Agumon > Palmon > Biyamon > Patamon

Gomamon may have the most useless move of the bunch (Marching Fishes!), but he has such a cool design and personality that he's just pure fun, especially as Joe's partner. Gatomon is way up there, and probably would be number one if not for both underdog bias in Gomamon and that Gatomon is a Champion-level Digimon palling around with rookies all day. I remember comparing it to when Goku and Gohan were chilling in Super Saiyan form while waiting for the Cell Games. They're just such a level above even though they're hanging out like it's no big deal.

Gabumon's got the wisdom and care and ability to slap some sense into Matt; Tentomon is just really fun; Agumon isn't bad, but I can't think of anything stand out about him besides him eating and his penchant for following Tai into mayhem recklessly; Palmon is better than Biyamon; and Patamon whines more than Shinji.

Not too many comments really on "Going the Distance" nor "Light and Day." Both were songs nominated in attempts to pick songs that wouldn't be on your list already, first and foremost. "Going the Distance" is an underrated track from the Rocky soundtrack that I've wanted to see ranked for some time, but always forgot to nominate, and I'm really happy with your write-up of it. Curious now how "Gonna Fly Now" would fare. "Light and Day" was just... a weird nomination. I'm not sure why I chose it over plenty of other things, but I know I was scouring Scrubs for songs. I'm kind of happy it's not still in the running.

i feel like plinkett/RLM really had a lot to say and were really speaking from the heart in regards to the original trilogy. i love those reviews, and they cut to the heart of what was wrong about them

they obviously don't feel that spark anymore, but keep making stuff out of obligation to money and their viewers

EDIT: Like, they could have had something really good and maybe not unique but flavored different than everything we've got. She's got the story they've shoveled to Reigns all these years but it actually makes sense for her, and they give her awful heel ****. I don't think I've been so hyped for a post-PPV turn and then so disappointed since Damien Sandow after WrestleMania.

FANTASTIC

1. Ciampa vs. Gargano
- I've heard Adam Cole vs. Ricochet is a sight to behold, and I cannot wait to watch some Adam Cole baybay, but this was easily one of the best matches of the weekend. Everything about it was so, so good. It's weird to remember thinking Wrestlemania weekend's fight should be the capper to their brilliant feud, and disappointed it was continuing, but the Fight Forever chants are REAL.

2. Undisputed ERA vs. Moustache Mountain
- I missed both of their previous bouts and didn't really watch any of Tyler Bate or Trent Seven before this. Holy hell. Tyler Bate is... something else. How.... I don't know, but wow. Also, some FANTASTIC tag team wrestling with tons of near pins and insanely close break-ups. Strong and O'Reilly are incredible.

3. Becky Lynch vs. Charlotte vs. Carmella
- I was a bit disappointed in how Becky handled things at the end and how the crowd cheered the possible heel turn on, until I rewatched the end of the match and really took in how Becky had that match won until Charlotte came in, hit the surprise finisher on her best friend, and stole victory away and celebrated like it was no big thing to Becky. I'm with the crowd. I really hope Becky doesn't go full heel and is still the people's champion, even as she tears into her bestie and they have some insane matches to come. Also, Carmella is an absolutely amazing heel in multi-woman matches, and I loooooved her Eddie Guerreroing of that slap to the back of Becky's head. Such a fantastic match.

GREAT

4. Daniel Bryan vs. Miz
- It felt weirdly old fashioned and yet still so hot. Like, Takeovers and the influx of indie talent and the women's evolution and such freaking hot tag team division right now (remember when Daniel Bryan's year also had 3MB vs. Los Matadores almost every night?) have made this match straight out of 2013 with more punches feel almost quaint, but it was still so solid overall and I cannot wait for more.

5. Rousey vs. Bliss
- I absolutely adored Rousey's handling of Alexa's usual heel coward tactics. Instead of getting goaded by Alexa's escapes and cowardly corner breaks, Rousey blocked two opportunity strikes and turned the temptation to Alexa. That meditation lotus into letting Bliss try and chokehold her, and then Rousey opens her eyes. My goodness, I am a Rousey fan. I think the most similar chills I can describe are when Taker sits up. I enjoyed the squash for what it was because it played Alexa so hard and matched her attempts to outwit. Alexa easily may have walked to the back if not for Ronda giving her such a juicy chance to try something. I love Alexa, but I don't think this hurts her at all. She got shut up, and she needs to humble herself and bring herself back up to be in contention again.

GOOD

6. AJ Styles vs. Samoa Joe
- I dunno. I was bored during quite a bit of it until AJ went crazy at the end. I don't really have much to say honestly.

7. Roman Reigns vs. Brock Lesnar
- Braun added a ton to the atmosphere, and this was hot and quick for Reigns and Brock. I also can't stop laughing at the chair to Lesnar's face and the beautiful Andy Dwyer briefcase throw.

8. Balor vs. Corbin
- As amazing and frenetic and fluid and awesome and engaging as Demon was, gotta give props to Corbin for being PERFECT in his hesitation and fear. Perfect bully squash IMO. Looking forward to RAW between these two, even if just backstage talk. I hope the Constable is still as annoying as he is but flinches when Balor's around now.

- I like the early taunts, but I've never gotten behind Jeff Hardy in the ring, and Nakamura's alright.
