yeah, sorta. it depends. I mean I probably won't play the game for a while anyway, if ever. if I do play I'll wait until I'm done with this topic so I can continue ranking blind. but at the end of the day I think melee characters really fall into two categories for most games

1. slow pieces of shit who stand there taking damage while being unable to do anything proactive

2. characters that can jump, teleport, etc. quickly around the map and chase down foes. bonus points if they also have grabs or other ways to pull their fleeing targets.

the second is pretty cool. the first can be pretty damn frustrating if they don't at least have a basic charge or something.

Nami


Not so much into mermaids and especially not the most fishy looking ones. I think Nami has the same problem as Cassiopeia where it just doesn't work for me. I guess I could empathize with the ones who are into this but yeah. No legs, no thighs, no ass, no hips, like-- ... okay I'm gonna stop before Waluigi1 writes me a citation for being literally attracted to females.

Nami does have some really colorful and cool looking skins, though, so I'll still rank her above Cassi.

Nasus


Reminds me a bit of Azir, at least in terms of tone and style. I looked under his related champions and, sure enough, Azir was actually there. Funny enough this guy has a TON of champs under his related tab. I think more than almost any character where I actually bothered to go and look. Is he that important to the lore or are they just listing any tenuous connection?

He's another egyptian themed monster (I don't care what they call it in league made up terms, it's clearly egyptian) except this time it's a dog instead of a bird. Uh... do I like dog or bird monsters more? Bird monsters, honestly. But I will say that Nasus actual design is better than Azir's actual design. So I guess there are cases where the categorical assumptions are less important than the individual.

Overall, cool stuff. At the end of the day he's honestly just a gnoll in weird clothes but, hey, gnolls are pretty cool. They certainly aren't as great as orcs or demons but he's not bad at all.

Since his title was revenant I figured he wasn't just some statue dude but actually an undead spirit or something along those lines. Sure enough, he appears to be a standard wraith (the kind that appears in a suit of armor). Not a mindblowingly awesome design but he is pretty badass as just a huge undead monster in a suit of armor. Honestly there's been a lot of good ones lately, so it'll be hard for him to break into the upper tiers, but if this had been earlier in the topic where mostly everyone was crap I could have seen him close to the top for a while. (Remember when Aatrox was at the top???)

Morgana


I almost want to see what predictions would look like for how Morgana would do, based on how much of my rankings have been revealed so far, but activity/energy level for this topic is also at an all time low. I think if I wait any longer to do the next batch of rankings the topic might just purge, lol. Speaking of purge, Morgana is a fallen angel -- a trope I'm pretty into -- and she also has a great design. Honestly if I had to summarize it she's like a more evil and more nonhuman looking Leblanc that is also just plain hotter. So, uh... pretty high ranking going by my tastes.



I went ahead and listened to her quotes and her voice acting seems a little bit hammy or, like, it doesn't actually sell very well for me. She doesn't really sound like an evil monster lady, she sounds like a college drama student reading lines in a studio booth. But, eh, whatever. Her skins are good overall but some of them do have the same problem as Evelynn where they are clearly trying to make her more normal human looking... but then she has some others that are just fucking amazing, so, yeah.



Honestly the battle between her and Evelynn for the top spot is pretty close as of right now, but they definitely belong on the same tier, making Morgana the only other character to break the true top tier barrier so far. As of right now I don't even know which I'll rank higher but I guess we can leave it as a surprise for whatever you scroll down to the tier list (as for me -- I'll decide after I search some arts to use for this write up)

and then you get absolutely disgusting cards like deathstalker rexxar because it's the only way to make the class work currently. this is a card that 100% of people would be complaining about if it wasn't for the fact that a lot of them simply have fun playing it.

remember the bitching about tuskarr totemic? the variance between a 1/1 and a 3/4 result was just too much. what exactly do you think the variance on deathstalker rexxar's hero power is??? discover adds a bit of consistency but it doesn't feel good when you need a taunt and you're offered no taunt options, but it feels even worse when your opponent needs exactly lifesteal and rush to survive and they make a huge one...

Well you can blame the community's utter hatred of Face Hunter or even more aggressive midrange versions for that. Ever since ONiK and the Call of the Wild nerf that's been the case. Of course when people hate what the class is and you have to build a new identity, you're gonna have to push cards.

I'm sure anyone who has read more than a few of my posts in this topic knows how much I agree with this. honestly just bring back a decent aggressive package for hunter and stop trying to make it into what it is now.

a hunter is literally someone who can snipe targets at range for high damaging, shreding through the health of opponents no matter what is standing between them. hunter's weakness should be that if they don't protect their own face they can get killed just as quickly by direct attacks. hunters weakness should not be that if you play a bunch of taunts they for some reason can't reach you because blizzard hasn't printed a face damage card in almost 2 years.

it reminds me a lot of north sea kraken with a more strict activation requirement. I guess as a mostly arena player (especially back then) this is the card that comes to mind for me immediately when I see a high attack low health minion that deals damage to the board on play.

Maokai


The twisted treant is another tree monster dude, I think this subject was broached already when I discussed the other tree guy earlier. If I remember correctly someone said the other guy was a faker/copycat so I guess Maokai is the original. And if I'm hilariously wrong here oh well at least it's hilarious.

All in all he looks pretty cool but doesn't top any of my cool monster dude lists. Also I unfortunately saw something called Meowkai which I can't unsee now, but it was kinda funny looking I suppose.

Placement: The other tree dude is apparently Ivern. Uh, I like Maokai a lot more honestly. He's like close to Hecarim levels... I guess a short and stout badass tree demon is cooler than a big lanky dumbass twig. Who knew?

Master Yi


Well he looks like some sort of curved sword using martial arts dude and for some reason they slapped 'mask with 50 goggles' onto his design. I wonder if he has a spider face under that mask? Sadly, probably not. Spiders generally don't have beards.

Definitely on the cooler end as far as the regular badass characters goes, and he has a lightsaber in one of his skins???

Miss Fortune


I have seen Miss Fortune before but not very much, and I haven't seen her official design or splash arts. More like, her image has just popped up a few times while stumbling through unscrupulous websites. People don't really seem to draw her very similar to how she looks in her official art, at least not in my experience. Anyway, uh, she kinda almost reminds me of like... maybe I'm just seeing what I want to see... but this is basically Jessica Rabbit dressed as a pirate, isn't it?

Before I go much further looking into her backstory or her alternate skins/splash arts, I can say that she already feels about on the same level as someone like Caitlyn -- probably higher. That is to say this is about the peak of what we can expect for regular human female placement.



After looking through those I can say that I think all of her alternate splash arts are great except for, ironically, the star guardian one (which is a theme I liked a lot in other previous characters)! That one is still cool but it's just not a great look for a character like this, at least for me. Her ingame character model does look a little awkward, with her proportions being just a bit too unrealistic, but overall I don't think I've paid attention to that with any other character so I won't hold that against her.

With that I'll just say we officially have a regular human back in the top 5 for the first time in a long time!
It was tough for me to decide if I'd place her above or below Leblanc, but in the end I think Fortune's innate hotness won out over Leblanc's evil bonus appeal.

yeah there was a time where china put their own splash arts in and were pretty much a major improvement across the board (riot even took some of them for a while) until riot redid pretty much everyone's artwork or reworked the champion completely

the main difference I see aside from the artwork improving is that they made her hair look more natural. and, honestly, I guess riot finally figured out what the average person already knows; more normal/cool looking outfits are straight up my attractive than bizarre fetish gear designed to look 'hot.'

that being said I just like monsters either way and nudity or bare skin doesn't really bother me or anything either, so I still like her older design. there's plenty of monsters who run around completely naked and I don't think of that as being sexual really.

Malphite


Malphite definitely falls more into the category of monster guys who looked cool based on their face portrait, but the full body skin looks significantly less cool. It's almost sad that in ranking around half the league roster there's already been enough of these that it has become its own thing.

For what it's worth his legacy stuff looks notably much, much worse. So I guess they did what they could with a character that had a really lame design to begin with. The end result ends up being pretty decent actually and I definitely think he ranks above the rest of the characters in that same type of grouping. Like I think about Kog'Maw and Cho'Gath and I definitely wouldn't rate him as low as those monsters.

Malzahar


A void altered human, which seems to have a pretty good track record on these rankings; I'll just say I thought he looked pretty sweet already just from first glance. I was sort of hoping he'd be some kind of shadow creature or maybe a wraith but I guess they really like going back to the same concepts and tropes over and over again. In spite of all that I still think his base design is awesome. Also I thought his name was pronounced MAL-UH-ZARR at first, and now that I realized it's pronounced MAL-ZAH-HARR I like his name a lot more.

His skins are ridiculously stupid for the most part, some of the dumbest ones for a "cool" character I've seen so far on the list. On the other side though he does have some cool monster pets that he can probably summon or control. Hey, I'm not gonna pretend I read about his abilities, but I can at least imagine what I think he probably does!

Comfortably finds his way into high tier, but I definitely wouldn't rate him higher than Aatrox.

Another human paladin type dude who apparently can shoot lasers or something. I didn't look at his skins right away so it took me a little while to realize that he actually wields laser guns, or like, magic guns that shoot lasers. As far as the action hero type guys go, he's pretty decent among them... but not really anything special to where he could break away from the rest of the pack. I just stuck him between Daren and Garius without putting much thought into it.

Lulu


Apparently she's a yordle but I won't hold it against her, or at least I'll try not to much. I rank her closer to the level of someone like Kled who I thought was actually kinda cool/funny looking, maybe even a bit better in Lulu's case. When I was originally reading about her I thought she was just some kind of fairy or pixie and so that might have painted my opinion in a slightly better way -- thinking she was some kind of mystical creature instead of a weird furball dressed up as a cliche.

(My current headcanon for the yordles that don't look like dogs is that someone shaved all of their fur)

Lulu's design is inherently amusing and somewhat hilarious to me. Honestly I would have liked to see something like Lulu in KDA. That would have been some funny shit, at least. Once I thought about it I ended up putting her even a full tier above Kled, who was a full tier ahead of most yordles, so that puts her like two standard deviations above the norm!

Lux


A female caster who uses light magic, which, I can take it or leave it. The fact that she fights using a wand is actually pretty cool though, always been a fan of wand users. Lux looks like someone who is very close to what, I think at least, most normal people would consider to be very attractive? Someone correct me if I'm wrong cause I'm definitely not normal and I can just say I don't really get it. I mean, I get it, like I think I can understand when I see someone who is supposed to be attractive, but yeah.

I don't hate Lux but I look at her and I feel nothing. Her witch outfit looks pretty cool though. Honestly "just below Ahri" seems like a good placement. If there's a bunch of memes about her blinding people with her brilliant aura then maybe she could rank higher.

Another powerful witch and this time it's an even more nonhuman looking frost witch. Man, those are some broad shoulders though. Where did she get those shoulderpads from? Azeroth? Lissandra has some really nice skins but her base design definitely looks a bit more on the clunky side. In particular note I'll give credit to her coven splash art which I think looks very spicy... ironic for a frost witch, I guess.

Are Chromas the ingame character models or are they something else? If so, I think her chroma look pretty cool. It's really just that main splash art which is drawn in a way that makes her look much worse than she really is... Looking past that I had to do a bit more speculation and thinking to figure out exactly where to rate her.

Overall I ended up liking Lissandra a lot which means we got three really high placing characters in this last batch. Apparently the letter L is really powerful!

Kog'Maw


One of the less cool giant monster designs featured so far. At first I thought he was a giant space turtle because all I could see was his face, and that, would have been really rad. Afterwards, eh, not so much. I actually like giant insect type monsters but it feels like League is kinda weak when it comes to designing them -- or at least hit or miss.

Probably won't fare any better than Cho'Gath for overall placements.

I'd like to see his dance if anyone wants to link it.

LeBlanc


Leblanc the Deceiver is like an immortal sorceress or something. Kinda fits the trope of old evil ugly witch that you'd see in a lot of fantasy materials but instead she's pretty hot and not that old looking. Her skins are kinda all over the place and some of them drastically alter her appearance. That makes it tough for me to factor those into her overall rating, but thankfully I kinda just like her base design well enough anyway.

They don't quite so easily break out of the "standard human" mold but I think ancient evil magic users are a trope I've always been fond of. Plus she has some cool eye make up.

Lee Sin


Your standard blind monk trope, although I gotta say his ingame model looks a bit on the scrawny side. I guess he relies more on martial arts than brute strength. He has a LOT of skins so I'm guessing he's been in the game for a while and/or he's just really popular. I don't have too much else to say about him -- feels similar to Ahri for me -- I see the appeal, but I don't love him or anything. Though, to be fair, I like him a lot more than Ahri based on design alone...

Leona


Another Paladin looking character, a type of human that must be popular in this setting. Uniquely, Leona is literally named after a Fire Emblem game. For a standard fighter chick I think her design is actually pretty cool and hits some of those perfect sweet spots for my own personal preferences; she's wearing armor and it's like real armor, not just some skimpy outfit with metal plates. She seems strong and capable but doesn't look too masculine or bulky.

She even has brown eyes which is my favorite eye color. Definitely on the upper range of the generic human contenders!

Shieldbreaker won't be good right away but it's one of the cards I am excited about for the future. too many decks right now are running multiple taunts that spread out across the board, and having a single taunt silencer isn't really great for that. spreading plague, saronite chain gang, need to rotate out. not only that but most aggressive decks are running either keleseth or baku and both of those restrict the use of shieldbreaker. it's good but it's not good enough to consider cutting keleseth or baku.

A lightning ninja rat. Overall, I don't hate him. Not much else to say just because he feels really similar to all of the other tiny furry characters so far; they just took an existing cliche (ninja) and made him a rat or whatever.

The Voidreaver is some kind of monster that specializes in hunting down and killing isolated targets and feeding on their fear. Hell yeah, now that's more like it. I also like his design a lot. Definitely one of the cooler looking monsters featured thus far. Good chance that once I look over things I actually rate him even higher than Aatrox. All hail THE VOID.

Kindred


Apparently a pair of characters, Wolf and Lamb, who fights together and are controlled by a single player. I like their character designs and concepts, the Wolf especially looks really menacing and cool. All that being said I've never "understood" this archetype in MOBA. I thought the entire think about these games is that they are supposed to be skill based, and so having an AI controlled companion... even one that you can direct and give commands to... doesn't feel intuitive. Maybe it's just because I'm bad at controlling more than one character at a time that I don't tend to like them.

Gameplay aside, Kindred are pretty cool and they will receive a high placement. They are kinda furry but I see them more as cool monsters that just happen to be animals...

He's a cartoon dog that runs around on a chicken jousting stuff. Honestly of the "bad" little furry designs this one is at least the funniest. He's actually both the funniest looking and the funniest in concept. On top of that, 'Guy riding a horse' is vague enough that it doesn't just feel like a lazy "Cliche + Small Animal" combination. He may actually rank favorably.
