The bodies of six fur seal pups have been found decapitated in a popular bay on New Zealand's South Island.

The 11-month-old seals were discovered on Monday by a tourism operator in Scenery Nook in Christchurch, said the Department of Conservation (DOC).

The seals' heads could not be found and the DOC believe the seals were killed elsewhere before being dumped from a boat.

It has called the incident "cruel and senseless".

He said the DOC had ruled out a shark attack, saying it was "incredibly unlikely sharks would have bitten the heads off seals but left the bodies untouched."

Three seals have been buried by DOC rangers and the other three bodies will be taken to Massey University for examination. The DOC has appealed for any witnesses to come forward.

It is a crime to harass, disturb or harm fur seals under New Zealand's Marine Mammals Protection Act.

Mr Thompson said there have been cases before of people injuring or killing seals after becoming frustrated over low fish numbers.

A robot on show at a Russian state-sponsored event has turned out to be a man dressed in a costume.

Robot Boris featured on Russian TV and was apparently able to walk, talk and dance.

But soon after its appearance journalists began to question the bot's authenticity.

In a picture published afterwards on social media, the neck of a person was clearly visible.

The robot is in fact a 250,000 rouble (2,975) costume called Alyosha the Robot, made by a company called Show Robots.

The robot suit creates illlusion of a real robot, say makers
While the organisers of the Proyektoria technology forum - which was aimed at youngsters - had not claimed the robot was real, the TV coverage on Russia-24 suggested it was.

Russian website TJournal raised concerns about the robot asking a series of questions:

why did the robot feature no sensors?
how did Russian scientists get the robot made so quickly, with no papers published about it beforehand?
why there has been no internet coverage of such an advanced robot?
why did robot make so many unnecessary movements during its dance?
why did it look like a man would fit perfectly inside it?
why offer a pre-recording of its voice rather than do it live?

On the website of the firm behind the Alyosha robot costume the product is described as being able to create "an almost complete illusion that you have a real robot".

The Albinism Society of Kenya have held a Mr and Miss Albinism beauty pageant in Nairobi to support those with the hereditary condition.

Albinism is a rare, hereditary condition that leads to a lack of pigmentation in the hair, skin and eyes. Without melanin in their skin, those with albinism are more vulnerable to the damaging effects of the sun.

Mr and Miss Albinism, held in November, aimed to help combat the discrimination and violence frequently faced by the group.

In Africa, albinism is associated with many negative misconceptions and superstitions. As a result, many albinos suffer stigma, alienation and even physical abuse.

The pageant, called "Accept me, include me, I can", included participants from Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, and aimed to boost the confidence of young people with albinism.

This year saw 30 participants compete for the pageant crowns.

Elizabeth James, a Tanzanian national, told Nairobi News how she was forced to change schools as a child when people stared and trailed her home. "The threat has reduced greatly, but it's still there," she said.

Okwii Simon Peter, 26, a lawyer from Uganda, told Reuters news agency that he was taking part in the pageant to show that living with albinism does not make him different.

He said "We are here mainly to create awareness, to do advocacy ... showcasing our beauty and talent."

Valencia Bosibori, 25, a customer care executive at a telecom firm in Kenya, took part in a similar event held in 2016 that was open only to Kenyans.

She told Reuters she wanted to "reach people who don't have that knowledge of what albinism is".

Emmanuel Silas Shedrack, 20, from Tanzania and Maryanne Muigai, 19, from Kenya were crowned the winners.

i'm glad they are trying to dispel the superstitions involving albinos in africa.

A man wrongly killed by police in an Alabama mall was shot three times from behind, an autopsy has revealed.

Emantic Bradford Jr, known as EJ, was shot in the head, neck and hip at the Riverchase Galleria in Hoover, Alabama.

Police had identified him as the gunman in the shooting of an 18-year-old man and 12-year-old girl last month.

But they later admitted they were mistaken and have since arrested another man. Erron Brown, 20, handed himself in to police.

According to an autopsy requested by Bradford's family, a police officer shot the 21-year-old three times from behind.

Benjamin Crump, the lawyer representing Bradford's family, reportedly told a news conference that based on the autopsy, "this officer should be charged with a crime".

"There's nothing that justifies him shooting EJ as he's moving away from him."

The officer responsible has been placed on administrative leave, and an investigation is under way.

However, authorities have given scant details about the case, and are refusing to release body camera footage of the incident.

In a joint statement reported by broadcaster ABC News, Hoover Mayor Frank Brocato and police chief Nicklaus Derzis said disclosing such evidence could "jeopardise the integrity" of the investigation.

Bradford was carrying a weapon at the time of the shooting, for which he had a permit. Police said he "heightened the sense of threat" at the scene by drawing his gun after shots rang out at the mall.

Under Alabama gun law, it is not illegal to carry a gun in public, but the Riverchase Galleria prohibits firearms on its premises.

Has the calling of the Dark Side become too strong?

Some people thought so after a man named Luke Sky Walker was arrested in Elizabethton, Tenn., where police say he violated his probation after a felony theft charge, WJHL reported.

The 21-year-old man, with his short and sandy brown hair, even bears a small resemblance to the young Jedi master Luke Skywalker from the original Star Wars films.

But while that Luke escaped with stolen Death Star plans, this Luke was caught in 2017 after police say he helped steal more than 40 road signs in April of 2017, the Elizabethton Star reported. The total value of the signs was about $2,300, according to the paper.

As of Monday, he was still being held without bond at the Carter County Detention Center, according to jail records.

On social media, some poked fun at the mans unusually cinematic name.

But the star reaction (literally) came from Mark Hamill himself, the actor best-known for portraying Luke Skywalker in the original films as an idealistic young Jedi and in the latest films as a cynical, yet noble teacher.

The real crime here, Hamill wrote, is Mr. & Mrs. Walker saddling this poor guy with that name in the first place.

Razor and scalpel blades have been discovered attached to the side of a childrens slide in west Lancashire.

Ormskirk and Burscough police said the blades were found on Friday morning at the Winifred Lane play area in Aughton.

The force posted a video on Facebook showing the razor blades attached apparently using sticky tape.

A spokesperson said: We would ask everyone to be vigilant and check any play equipment before you let your child use it If anyone has any information about this wed urge them to contact us as soon as possible. Whoever did this could have caused serious injury to a child please be assured we are fully investigating this matter.

By Sunday morning more than 2,000 people had commented on the Facebook post, mostly expressing their horror at the discovery and demanding stiff penalties for whoever placed them there.

Stephen Davis wrote: I was horrified when I read this. These people have very serious problems. I hope no kids were hurt.

Angela King said: This is awful. Make[s] me feel sad that someone would think of doing this, let alone actual doing it just horrible.

Doreen Stephenson, a councillor for Aughton Park, told the BBC the culprits were a disgrace, adding: Its quite frightening to think what the consequences could be I cant believe anybody would stoop so low to do something like this in a public childrens play area.

US President Donald Trump has defended the use of tear gas on a crowd of migrants, including children, trying to cross the US-Mexico border on Sunday.

Border agents were forced into action because they were "being rushed by some very tough people", Mr Trump said.

Critics have accused the Trump administration of a draconian response, while Mexico has demanded the US investigate its use of tear gas.

Mexico says it has deported nearly 100 migrants who attempted to enter the US.

Sunday's confrontation broke out after a migrants' march in Tijuana spiralled out of control, with hundreds of migrants attempting to breach barriers separating Mexico from the US.

US Customs and Border Protection, which polices the border, said its personnel had been assaulted and hit by stones.

Women and children were among those trying to protect themselves from tear gas fired by the authorities, sparking condemnation from activists and some politicians.

What did Mr Trump say?
Speaking in Mississippi, Mr Trump said the border agents were right to use tear gas. "Here's the bottom line: Nobody's coming into our country unless they come in legally."

He added that the gas used was "very safe" and was a "very minor form" of tear gas.

However, this was disputed by some journalists at the scene, who said the tear gas was painful even from a significant distance away.

Mr Trump also questioned why parents had taken their children to the site, and alleged that some of the people at the border were not parents, but "grabbers" who had taken children with them to improve their chances of asylum.

Ms Nielsen accused migrant caravan organisers of using women and children as "human shields" during their encounters with law enforcement, "putting vulnerable people in harm's way".

Mr Trump and Ms Nielsen did not provide evidence for their claims.

A photograph of Maria Meza and two of her daughters escaping tear gas was widely circulated online, and used by several major newspapers.

Ms Meza, from Honduras, said she had not attempted to cross the border, and was only looking across the fence when the tear gas was used.

"I was scared," she told BuzzFeed News. "I grabbed my daughters and ran... I thought my kids were going to die with me because of the gas we inhaled."

Meanwhile, a Honduran migrant at the border told AFP the US authorities had started using tear gas as they neared the border.

"The alarm went off and they began throwing tear gas at us. A person got hit and lots of kids fainted. So some people got rocks and threw them because many kids were fainting."

https://www.stuff.co.nz/business/world/108817565/what-did-it-take-to-launch-the-daily-stormer-neonazi-site-a-little-help-from-dad

The white nationalists mailed their donations in dribs and drabs: Sometimes a US$10 cheque, sometimes as money orders, sometimes in cash - often in US dollars, but also in British pounds and other foreign currencies.

All of it went to support the Daily Stormer, the internet's most notorious neo-Nazi website, featuring sections including "Jewish Problem" and "Race War."

Over the last five years, the far-right site operated by Andrew Anglin, 34, raked in at least US$100,000 (NZ$146,000) to US$125,000 from supporters, according to an estimate contained in court records.

The money went to an office - and later, a PO box - in Worthington, Ohio, maintained by Anglin's father, Greg, a retired therapist, who would collect and deposit the funds. Greg Anglin had helped his son, at the time a far-right blogger, set up the website in 2013 and it soon became one of the internet's top destinations for unabashed racists.

"I was sitting in my living room of my condo with my son, and he told me that he was going to start another website," Greg Anglin said in a deposition on October 31, where he also revealed the details about the site's donations and finances.

"And I said, OK. And he asked me if he could use my credit card to register the name. And I asked how much it was, and it wasn't very much money, so I said fine."

And thus the Daily Stormer was born.

When asked why he had assisted his son in setting up the site - and helped file incorporation documents and deposit donations - Greg Anglin replied: "I have a difficult time as a dad sometimes knowing what to support and what not to support. I don't take responsibility for someone else's actions."

But, under oath, he also indicated he was displeased with his son for registering the Daily Stormer website under his name.

"We had a very direct conversation where I told him I was very disappointed in him that he allowed that to happen, and that I wanted it removed immediately," Greg Anglin said. He also claimed not to know anything about the Daily Stormer's financial condition.

The disclosures provide a new window into the Daily Stormer's operations at a time when America's organised far right has been besieged by lawsuits and corporate crackdowns, a backlash incurred by the movement's increasingly bold attempts to gain more mainstream attention via social media and rallies.

Public concern about the movement's activities is arguably greater than ever, as law-enforcement officials report a sharp rise in hate crimes, including an October 27 mass shooting at a Pittsburgh synagogue that left 11 dead.

i wouldn't be pleased if i discovered my name was used to register a website for hate.

Six teenage boys from an elite school have been charged with gang sexual assault after videos of alleged hazing incidents surfaced online.

St Michael's College School, a private Catholic all-boys school in Toronto, expelled eight students last week in connection with the incidents.

Police say they are investigating at least four separate assaults, two of which were sexual in nature.

The school has been accused of turning a blind eye to hazing and bullying.

The school received a bomb threat on Monday morning, just as police were giving a press conference on their investigation.

Six teenage boys have been charged with assault, gang sex assault and sex assault with a weapon. Their identities have been withheld because they are minors.

Canadian media first reported on the expulsions last week.

CityNews says it saw two videos of alleged hazing incidents. In one of the videos, a male student is naked from the waist down in a locker room, and appears to be sexually assaulted with a broom handle.

In another video, a male student sits in a bathroom sink in his underwear, while other students slap him and splash him with water, CityNews reported.

Police say the videos meet the definition of child pornography.

Dominic Sinopoli, who heads Toronto police's sex crimes unit, told media on Monday anyone in possession of the video should "delete it".

Mr Sinopoli says he believes there are more videos and more victims, and is urging people to come forward if they have additional information.

Meanwhile, St Michael's is initiating an independent investigation into the incidents.

"We want to come out of this as leaders in understanding how to frame a culture so this doesn't occur," principal Greg Reeves told CBC News.

Mr Reeves described the contents of the videos as "horrific".

The school has come under fire for not reporting the incident to police sooner, and trying to deal with the allegations internally.

St Michael's became aware of the locker room video on the evening of 12 November, but did not bring it to police attention until two days later, after media began reporting on it.

Toronto police detective Dominic Sinopoli told media that police are investigating whether the school fulfilled its legal obligation to report the incident to police.
