A federal employee infected a U.S. government network with malware after viewing more than 9,000 pornographic Web pages at work, according to an inspector generals report.

The report, published Oct. 17, shows that the employees actions were discovered during a security audit of the computer network at the U.S. Geological Survey. The employee had an extensive history of visiting adult pornography websites on a work computer, many of which were Russian and contained malware that spread to the USGS network.

The USGS is a government agency that performs analysis of the countrys landscape and seeks to recognize hazards that may threaten natural resources.

The employee, who was not named in the report, saved many of the pornographic images onto an unauthorized USB device and a personal cellphone which was also found to contain malware. The Android phone was connected to the employees government-issued computer, according to the report.

Now, the Office of Inspector General is recommending that the USGS enforce a strong blacklist policy of rogue Web domains and more closely monitor its employees' Internet usage.

An ongoing effort to detect and block known pornographic websites, and websites with suspicious origins, will likely enhance preventive countermeasures, the report reads. The inspector general also suggested that the USGS enact a security policy that would restrict usage of unauthorized USB devices and personally owned mobile devices.

The USGS is part of the U.S. Interior Department, which specifically prohibits employees from using government systems to view pornography, according to the report. Employees are also asked to refrain from connecting personal devices, such as USB drives and cellphones, to Government-issued computers or networks.

The employee had previously signed a statement indicating understanding of these rules, according to the report. Nancy DiPaolo, external affairs director at Interiors inspector generals office, told Nextgov that the employee no longer works for the USGS.

so that's how the russians are infiltrating america.

they have responsibility for their actions, however pretending that the people who play into these delusions or share them as well don't play a part is wrong. for example, there was a man arrested for threatening to kill a news organization and called them an enemy of the people days after trump himself called the news that. trump's speech played a part inciting that mans behavior. you may not have the desire to take action, but others do. with how mainstream fox news has made conspiracies, they now believe that they are not only right but justified in their actions.

commenting on it is one thing, taking it seriously and putting forth that it is true is quite another. it reinforces the delusions. fox news is one of the least trustworthy news organizations and were faced with a lawsuit over their handling of seth rich. they continued to push the conspiracy theory with him and were eventually faced with a lawsuit by the family over it. they are playing directly to the extremists for ratings. they are also one of the most viewed sources in the country, and frankly, that is scary.

And by doing that, a lot of innocent people got killed, which is what those people (who think it's a war crime) are most angry about, right? I just wanted to know if those same people would feel the same way if it happened to Germany and killing Nazis (along with innocent civilians), since people to this day still bash on Germans and Nazis, but love Japan like a far away brother.

I can't think of an instance where I would not consider killing thousands of innocent people not a horrific crime against humanity. Good intentions and future consequences are entirely irrelevant to the notion of something being a war crime.

Lesser evils are still evils.

Anyone who claims this has no idea how vicious the Japanese army actually was during WWII and why even today they still aren't allowed to have an army

https://www.thenation.com/article/why-the-us-really-bombed-hiroshima/

This story may assuage the conscience of the air museum visitor, but it is largely myth, fashioned to buttress our memories of the good war. By and large, the top generals and admirals who managed World War II knew better. Consider the small and little-noticed plaque hanging in the National Museum of the US Navy that accompanies the replica of Little Boy, the weapon used against the people of Hiroshima: In its one paragraph, it makes clear that Trumans political advisors overruled the military in determining the way in which the end of the war in Japan would be approached. Furthermore, contrary to the popular myths around the atomic bombs nearly magical power to end the war, the Navy Museums explication of the history clearly indicates that the vast destruction wreaked by the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the loss of 135,000 people made little impact on the Japanese military.

Indeed, it would have been surprising if they had: Despite the terrible concentrated power of atomic weapons, the firebombing of Tokyo earlier in 1945 and the destruction of numerous Japanese cities by conventional bombing had killed far more people. The Navy Museum acknowledges what many historians have long known: It was only with the entry of the Soviet Unions Red Army into the war two days after the bombing of Hiroshima that the Japanese moved to finally surrender. Japan was used to losing cities to American bombing; what their military leaders feared more was the destruction of the countrys military by an all-out Red Army assault.

The top American military leaders who fought World War II, much to the surprise of many who are not aware of the record, were quite clear that the atomic bomb was unnecessary, that Japan was on the verge of surrender, andfor manythat the destruction of large numbers of civilians was immoral. Most were also conservatives, not liberals. Adm. William Leahy, President Trumans Chief of Staff, wrote in his 1950 memoir I Was There that the use of this barbarous weapon at Hiroshima and Nagasaki was of no material assistance in our war against Japan. The Japanese were already defeated and ready to surrender. in being the first to use it, weadopted an ethical standard common to the barbarians of the Dark Ages. I was not taught to make war in that fashion, and wars cannot be won by destroying women and children.

the belief that it ended the war is a lie told to deny the fact a war crime took place and many innocent lives were lost pointlessly.

President Donald Trump has warned that the US will bolster its nuclear arsenal to put pressure on Russia and China.

Speaking to reporters, he repeated his belief that Russia has violated the 1987 Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) treaty, which he has threatened to leave. Russia denies this.

The Cold War-era treaty banned medium-range missiles, reducing the perceived Soviet threat to European nations.

Russia has warned it will respond in kind if the US develops more weapons.

Mr Trump said the US would build up its arsenal "until people come to their senses".

He added: "It's a threat to whoever you want to include China and it includes Russia and it includes anybody else that wants to play that game... [Russia has] not adhered to the spirit of that agreement or to the agreement itself."

Meanwhile, US National Security Adviser John Bolton has been holding talks in Moscow after Russia condemned the US plan to quit the deal.

Mr Bolton was told that the US withdrawal would be a "serious blow" to the non-proliferation regime.

https://www.politico.com/story/2018/10/16/ingraham-fox-news-advertising-902466

The sustained loss of advertising minutes and big, nationally recognized brands shows the power of activist-led boycotts in the Trump era.

Laura Ingrahams ratings are surging, but big advertisers are still steering clear of her show months after a series of activist-led boycotts scared off many national brands.

Ingraham, the conservative radio talker-turned-Fox News opinion host, infuriated gun-control advocates in March when she mocked Parkland, Fla., shooting survivor and activist David Hogg for being rejected by a handful of colleges. Hogg called for his supporters to boycott brands until they stopped advertising on Ingrahams show, leading several major companies to drop out. He renewed the call in June, after Ingraham compared facilities at which immigrant children were being held to summer camps.

Its not unusual for advertisers to flee temporarily when controversy strikes a television program. But the sustained loss of advertising minutes and big, nationally recognized brands from "The Ingraham Angle" shows the power of activist-led boycotts and the depth of major corporations' concerns about offending would-be consumers in the hyperpoliticized era of President Donald Trump.

Early this year, Ingrahams show averaged nearly 15 minutes of advertisements per hour, in line with those of her Fox News prime-time colleagues Sean Hannity and Tucker Carlson, according to an analysis for POLITICO by Kantar Media.

That number plummeted after the boycott campaign, and it still hasnt recovered: Last month, The Ingraham Angle averaged 10 minutes and 50 seconds of ads per hour, Kantar Media found.

While thats up a couple of minutes from directly after the spring boycott, more significant, according to Kantar Media chief research officer Jon Swallen, is the fact that Ingrahams show remains bereft of blue-chip national advertisers.

Before April, her top advertisers included Geico, Arbys, Liberty Mutual and Humira. Last month, though, that distinction belonged to lower-profile brands: HomeToGo.com, Sandals Resorts, Jenny Craig, ClearChoice Dental Implants and Nutrisystem.

That boycott held firm, regardless of the fact that audience ratings are increasing, Swallen said. There are still a number of advertisers that dont want to be associated with the program.

Brands are skittish about alienating potential customers, he said.

A man has admitted sending hundreds of racist letters nationwide including calls for a "Punish a Muslim Day".

David Parnham, 35, sent the letters to mosques, Muslim parliamentarians including Lord Ahmed of Wimbledon, the Queen, David Cameron and Theresa May.

He pleaded guilty at the Old Bailey to 15 offences, including soliciting to murder and staging a bomb hoax.

Parnham, of St Andrews Close, Lincoln, was remanded in custody and will be sentenced at a later date.

During his two-year campaign, Parnham sent wave after wave of letters across the country that included white supremacist imagery and threats to minorities, mostly Muslims.

His first letters sent in June 2016 contained a white powder as a hoax poison.

In one letter sent to David Cameron, Parnham wrote "Allah is Great" and in others sent to mosques he wrote "Paki filth".

Three months later Parnham sent another wave of white powder letters, including those addressed to the Queen and Theresa May respectively.

One of his poison hoaxes was so sophisticated that it triggered a chemical attack alert at a Royal Mail sorting office in Sheffield.

The following February, he targeted mosques around the UK. One letter to worshippers in Hull included a warning that they were going to be "slaughtered very soon".

'Awards' for attacks
In March 2017 he escalated his campaign, encouraging recipients of his post at the University of Sheffield to attack ethnic minorities, proposing that he would donate 100 to charity for each killing.

The court heard these letters amounted to soliciting to murder and Parnham's guilty plea to this charge means he could now receive a life sentence.

A year later, Parnham sent out letters headlined "Punish a Muslim Day", offering "awards" for attacks on people, mosques and Mecca.

He was eventually caught after his DNA and fingerprints were recovered from some of the letters, including one that he sent to Dylann Roof, a US white supremacist who is on death row for a mass murder of black churchgoers three years ago.

i'm glad they caught him.

Firefighters tackling a blaze in Middlesbrough came under attack from youngsters who threw wood and stood on hoses to prevent the flow of water.

Youths also opened the rear doors of fire engines to try to remove life-saving equipment, Cleveland Fire Brigade said.

It happened as crews were trying to put out a rubbish blaze in the Fransham Road area of the town.

The youngsters also tried to start another fire nearby, the brigade said.

Davey Howe, of the Fire Brigades Union, said youngsters see such attacks as being "almost like a game".

CCTV footage of the trouble, which happened on Thursday evening, has been passed to police.

It was the latest in a number of incidents over recent days - one of which saw between 30 and 40 youngsters at the scene, according to the brigade.

'Mindless attacks'
Cleveland crews have recently started wearing body cameras as part of a pilot scheme that aims to stem such attacks.

Mr Howe said: "We need to get to the root cause of it. A lot of the attacks are opportunistic by young people and it's as if it's almost like a game.

"We need to get to these young people and make them realise it stops us from doing our job properly.

"That's why we've resorted to wearing cameras. They're to make people think twice before these mindless attacks."

The brigade said there had been a 60% increase in the number of attacks on its crews in recent years.

From April 2017 to March 2018 it recorded 45 incidents - up from 28 attacks between April 2015 and March 2016.
