Took a lot of what board 8 told me to heart, and did an intro video. Still don't think I'm in any sort of a groove but I think I'm getting better at talking to a camera at least!

@foolm0r0n how did I do on lighting (I realized after filming one of the bulbs wasn't pointed perfectly on my face but I think I did much better)

The first boss, which was one of the hardest of my galaxy playthrough was actually REALLY fun now that I know what I'm doing.

I don't forsee HUGE problems until I reach the final boss in terms of having any trouble, it's easy enough to avoid getting hit by most enemies in this game except for certain cheap ones.

Getting some battle trophies for Reimi early game, I do have to admit I sort of like her fighting style with all it's flips and twists.

Well I beat the game

That boss took me about 2 hours to beat.

The plot was garbage, the dialogue was garbage, and the characters were garbage, the pacing, art direction, save point allocation, crafting system, quests were all garbage.

But for some reason I just love star ocean games.

really weird array of monsters. Certain monsters at rank 60 were giving me some trouble and giving me 15,000 exp and some monsters in the top 30s are a breeze and give me 3000

Wow just fought the boss that basically never stops spawning horseshoe crab enemies (which can do 3/10 of your health bar in one hit [more than the boss' attacks])

I checked my monster book afterwards, I found 80 of them in that fight alone.

So that wasn't cool imhhho

To be clear, I don't like any of the Lunar games, but when I was talking about "games that get JRPGing wrong in all the usual ways" I was specifically talking about Dragon Song. There's nothing offensively wrong with the other games, they're just snoozefests

I looked this up and it said pickpocketing lowers affinity for characters

I've pickpocketed every single NPC in this game up until the 7th character

Also Lymle might actually be the BEST playable character in star ocean 4 (I still don't have a full team)

and no, she's not a great character, but she does seem to be the most mature and tolerable.

If I had to rate the cast I have so far

there's one part of the game where you have to find a criminal, the cut scene says "we should ask the townfolks"

Apparently they mean "townfolks" of a completely different town, because literally no one in the town you are in mentions the criminal.

After you go to a different town, you find out from the people running the colosseum that the criminal has entered, but the colosseum is not "ready" despite the person outside it happily telling you its open.

After looking around the entire town for a secret entrance, eventually I talked to an npc who said she saw the criminal running towards the colosseum, that opened the doors.

It's literally such bad game design I can't even get mad at it, I'm more impressed. It's like if Lunar Dragon Song was fun to play.

The "girl next door" character accusing Edge of trying to look up her dress when crawling down a ladder despite the fact that she does not wear a dress

a fact that the audience knows because after every battle the camera shows her from a panty shot angle

Eternal Sonata
Tales of Zestria
Arc Rise Fantasia

Those examples stand out of games that get JRPGing wrong in all the usual ways. Star ocean still checks a lot of the boxes, but there's something about the Star Ocean formula that flavors tropes that are usually very hard to swallow into kind fun world building and exploring.

So far my favorite parts are:

-The main character literally shaking an injured man to death when asking him what happened.

-the aforementioned invitation of a 4 year old to be a crew member

-a villian who has the main character in confinement says "do this and I will kill you afterwards" the main character doesn't do it, and the villain responds "We will need time to think of your punishment"

-During a tense time sensitive situation, the crew spends about 5 minutes deciding how they will run down a small corridor that is closing itself off AS THEY SPEAK

-Going through an entire dungeon with over double exp because the game engine has a lot of ways to cheese it.

so star ocean 4 is surprising me in how difficult it is early on. Even going 90% of the battles without taking damage, I had to face the first boss at 25% health since there was no opportunities to heal without walking back to the ship. Then the game offers to fly you back to base and the main character says "no need! I'll enjoy the walk" so i had to walk back to the ship with 10% health, no save points between.

Usually when games do that it means they want you to run into a cutscene or find something in the alternate route back

but apparently this one was just busywork to pad the game. That's not a super great sign of the game to come.

So far my favorite part is edge finds an injured dude on the ground who says "hey we took a piece of the meteor in our ship and it resulted in me having to blow up the ship."

and then Edge asks "Why???" and shakes him so hard he literally kills him.

and then Edge finds a piece of meteor on the ground and decides to take it back to the ship.

thanks wg. I ultimately chose to leave the majority of ums in because it's legit the way I talk. I cut it if I thought it was going to be detrimental but I had to make a choice between many cuts or less cuts and more of a weird amateur tone. I stand by my descision but hopefully a little practice can cut down on the ums in the future

I'm a tiny bit drunk

JUST drunk enough to buy a star ocean. I actually really liked 3, it's one of my favorite games but I've beat it enough times in my life (although it'd be nice to play it without having to switch discs)

4 is really bad I hear, but I think the gameplay is a bit more "safe" and typical of a star ocean game

5 I've heard is more mediocre and forgetable, which is not really what I'm looking for. I'd rather have a sucky game with good features.

while this is true, and some of the criticism in this topic looks to be somewhat valid, you also have to remember that board 8 is a really small niche population mostly filled with EXTREME outliers. changing your entire production process to cater to their criticism may not get you the level of mainstream viability that you may be aiming for.

And of course there are those who actually ARE extreme in the movement, people who want to broaden the scope of whats considered wrong so they can gain power, or people who are overly sensitive and not capable of dealing with their internal issues so they choose to blame external forces. These people are common in pretty much every movement, but I think social justice groups specifically have a hard time drawing the line between "giving the wrong person a voice" and "silencing another's pain"

Which is fair, I don't know where that line is and I'm not going to pretend I know
