I can't verify Venusaur's post, but An Lushan, a relatively well known Chinese military general was of Iranian (Sogdian to be more specific) and Turkic origin during this time period. Japan unlike China has been a "friend" to the West: especially America for a good portion of the 20th century. Also people really love sushi so there's that too. Because Japan unlike China has been a world power since 1905 and even since the late 19th century. Chinese intellectuals studied in Japan, as did Chinese soldiers like Chang-Kai Shek. Japan had a lot of time using soft power techniques staying relevant since the post-war period. Topic | Which East Asian country has the more beautiful culture: China or Japan? |
Vita_Aeterna 06/02/18 2:31:54 AM #11 | Japan has been increasingly sinicized since the 6th-7th century until they grew too large as a power in the late 16th century and started waving their martial dick. Only difference is that Japan has retained a warrior elite class for like 900 years whereas China largely gave it up after Qin unification. People on this board only think Japan > China because they believe in the romanticized Japan. Samurai warrior code? Bull-fucking-shit--just like chivalry. Ninjas? Extremely mythified. Zen Buddhism? Came from China (which ultimately originates from S. Asia). Japanese writing system? Originates from China. The Japanese imperial system came from China. A lot of philosophical ideas also have its root from China. The first Japanese sword designs came from China. A lot of the martial arts come from China via the Okinawans. The biggest reason I assume is because of the influence of video games, anime/manga, film and because they're the only non-Western country that's fully embraced Westernization. The post-war years marked a time when a major power bent their knee and whole-heartily embraced modernity and westernization after the post-war years. Japan unlike China has been a "friend" to the West: especially America for a good portion of the 20th century. Also people really love sushi so there's that too. Topic | How about that Arrested Development season 5? SPOILERS |
Vita_Aeterna 06/01/18 10:10:46 PM #1 | Thought it was pretty weak, much weaker than season 4. First 3 episodes were ass, but the rest were decent. Still not even close to the first 3 seasons. Tobias was completely terrible, Buster was disappointing. Way too many unfunny jokes, and too much of the season relied on events happened in season 4 which itself was decent at best. Idk, but season 5 wasn't even 1/10th as innovative, funny, smart or as well edited as the first 3.
