Going back to the conversation on isekai shows, I also watched Death March to the Parallel World Rhapsody today (mostly because I'm trying to catch up on more 2018 stuff). It wasn't terrible but almost everything about it felt generic and it didn't do much of anything with the few interesting concepts it might've had. For example, for a society with so much slavery, the morality of it was barely examined at all. I did appreciate a few things, though. Actually seeing the main character interact with game mechanics was nice to have. Also the bland teenage MC casually going and banging some prostitutes was just about the last thing I expected from an anime like this, so good for it on surprising me I guess!

This is actually a good counterargument. I was thinking it could be written around in other ways (making her an actual tactical genius, for example) but I suppose that would run into a different problem of making her even more overpowered. The alternate reality knowledge is probably something that would come across more in the novels than it did in the anime, too. I might have to look into them in the future as you suggest!

This was what really held the game back from me. I enjoyed the dialogue so it sucked that I had to multi-task during it because unless I read all the options and made my choice before the other character had even finished speaking they would disappear. Ugh.

I just finished Saga of Tanya the Evil (another anime I felt I had to watch based off its awesome title). My first comment is, like... not everything needs to be an isekai. The story would barely need to change if Tanya wasn't the reincarnation of a Japanese salaryman, so why bother shoehorning that into an otherwise unique character idea and setting? Just have her be an ruthless little girl who hates god and the whole anime would be better for it.

That one nitpick aside, I enjoyed it! Tanya was a fun character and I liked watching her crush her enemies even as she simply tried to find a peaceful life. This comparison isn't perfect, but I also got an Ace Combat vibe from this with all the aerial battles and the main unit steadily gaining a frightening reputation by being the linchpin of so many operations.

Considering how much I loved the first season, Amanchu Advance might just be the worst follow-up I've ever seen. It's been dangerously close to earning that dubious honor for awhile now but this latest episode has settled it. It wasn't so bad at first, just kind of aimless, but then there was that terrible three-episode dream arc. Supernatural episodes barely worked in Aria, they don't belong in Amanchu at all. And now Pikari's love interest is a crappy little boy and that's the final nail in the coffin. What a letdown.

I just finished watching Sagrada Reset. Usually I would just make a quick post about my thoughts, but this anime was a neat experience so I want to delve a bit deeper into it. MAL tells me the only person on my friends list who has seen it is Wicklebee, who I haven't seen in here in awhile, so I'll keep this spoiler-free. I'm not sure that anyone will even care to read about me examining why I liked something but oh well.

Anyway, Sagrada Reset definitely isn't perfect. Characters emoted like robots at times and there's a whole lot of sitting around talking, considering, and philosophizing. It's easy for me to imagine a person watching this and being bored to tears. However, the show's premise is of a town where people have fantastic abilities that the main characters interact with to solve problems, and I found the way those abilities came together to be constantly fascinating.

I feel that most stories like this would run into several pitfalls, like pulling new abilities out of thin air to solve things or only having one easy-mode solution that it used over and over. I never felt like Sagrada Reset came anywhere near making those mistakes, however. Every person's ability was carefully set up and used within its own limitations, and the plot was capable enough not to back itself into a corner where BS was needed to fix things. Everything always came together in a clever way and I found it enthralling to consider all the abilities available and try to figure out how those tools could be used to solve the various problems. I'll admit that the characters were rough at first, but the anime still managed to hook me until I started caring about them too. It isn't an anime for everyone but obviously the right kind of person can really enjoy it.

I just finished Bodacious Space Pirates, which I simply had to watch because that is a great title for an anime. As for the show itself, though, I can only describe it as 'fine'. I dunno, maybe I went in with my expectations too high. The premise of a high school girl becoming a space pirate captain is something that really appeals to me so it only being 'fine' is actually kind of a disappointment. I don't have any major complaints so it's not like it did anything wrong, it just never seemed to do anything special either. I guess if I had to pick one thing, the fact that their piracy had to stay within the bounds of the law was a weird choice. It really confined the potential of the series and made truly interesting plots almost impossible. Ah well.

I've been slowly watching Is the Order a Rabbit? for the last week or so and I finally finished the second season. It was cute fun so I definitely enjoyed it, but I felt like something held it back from reaching the heights that similar cute girl gag anime like Kiniro Mosaic or Urara Meirocho reached for me. At times it seemed like Rabbit was prioritizing feel-good fluffiness over the actual humor, maybe that was it. Anyway, I don't want to make it seem like I didn't enjoy it since it was still good! Cocoa was my favorite with her big sister cheerfulness but all the characters played off of each other really well.

It took me awhile because I kept taking breaks from it, but I finally finished Golden Time. I enjoyed it quite a bit at first but it just got worse and worse the longer it went on. I'll spoiler tag my thoughts and will warn in advance that this has more than a little bit of whining.

I have a soft spot for crazy girls so early Koko was the best. The idea of a dude falling in love with a yandere stalker lady is great, I would've loved it if the whole anime was about that. Instead that was only the first arc and everything after that consisted into terrible melodrama. It was the worst kind of drama too, where things only happened to facilitate more drama. There was a random car crash just to make everyone miserable, Banri's memories came and went by the whims of the plot fairy rather than anything concrete, and Koko, Oka, and Yana all acted wildly out of character at one point or another, all to create more drama. Like Koko's defining character trait is that she falls in love hard and doesn't know how to let go but nope she's breaking up with him now. And then in the finale, even though nothing about his condition really changed, I guess they're back together again? This would have meant more before they made me hate Koko. In fact, the only character I didn't hate by the end was 2D-kun because he was always the one pointing out the bad writing.

I also want to say something about the amnesia. I'm actually a huge fan of amnesia as a plot device because it offers an excellent way to explore who a character really is. For example, a character might be strong at their core but have been broken down by their experiences into someone who is weak. Amnesia would erase those experiences and revert the character to being strong again, and if the writing is good enough the audience could examine aspects between pre- and post-amnesia and come to a deeper understanding of the character. I love that, but that... isn't how Golden Time handled it at all. Banri was literally a different person after losing his memories, going from a weak crybaby to a far more charismatic person. They even underscored how much he changed by having his emo ghost self somehow sabotaging weather and shit just to try and make him miserable. There were no similarities between them to highlight anything meaningful about his character. It was just bad drama.

You mean the eldest son? I thought he was fine, he interacted well with everyone else in the cast. I thought all of the characters were fine, though.

I watched through Castle Town Dandelion today. It wasn't perfect or anything, but I still highly enjoyed it. The concept of an election for the next king was an interesting foundation for the slice-of-life moments, and everyone having a random superpower added a lot of gag potential without ever becoming too distracting. It was impressive just how many plot elements and characters this show managed to juggle. I liked everyone but shy Akane was the best.
