| Eevee-Trainer 06/10/18 2:52:36 PM #5 | Depends on where you'd want to define a starting point. The first that come to mind are the birth of the universe and probably the formation of Earth. However both aren't precisely known down to the year to my knowledge, and the latter has the increased vagueness of when you'd consider a clump of cosmic dust a planet. Better starting points would be specific events in human history I suppose. In that sense, Christ's birth is as good as any other event if for no other reason than the fact Christianity has had a pretty big influence on the modern world. It's still relative to humans (historically based events in general that is) and doesn't provide quite as easily communicable an age as it would for objective scientific events - imagine trying to tell an alien about a historical period without using their own dating system, it's not even guaranteed their years or days are the same as ours and could ruin the sense of scale. But at least where humanity is concerned, picking a single historical event and measuring based off it is useful enough for the time being. Kurzesagt actually tackled this on YouTube a while back - I forget the name but it tackled the same basic issue of making a calendar. I think they chose their starting point at the birth of human civilization, specifically the building of something about 12000 years ago...
