I don't know anything about Game of Thrones (books or show), so this might be a dumb-as-shit question, but are the first five books really SO complex that he'd have no idea how to end the story now? He must have written a damn labyrinth.

He added in a shitload of bloat to his storylines after the third book that he now has to wrap up and find a way to have all these other characters introduced in that time find some sort of conclusion. Keep in mind the show has a much easier time since it has nowhere near the same amount of characters and a lot of minor characters have their personalities or direction 'absorbed' into bigger, more important characters.

I maintain that the first three books were the stories he really wanted to tell and should've ended there. Everything after is being done for the money and the passion is simply not there anymore.

But compare the sheer list of awesome games from like, 1998-2002 to the list from 2014-2018. It's nowhere near competitive with it. Gaming is on a sharp decline and while you sometimes get moments of brilliance it doesn't change the fact that you're put through torture to wait for those few and far between titles.
