You don't think the people who drafted the 2nd amendment realized that technology would progress?

I think it's possible that they realized technology would progress. Still, as it stands today, we have "the right to bear arms," but that certainly doesn't apply to every kind of gun in existence. So I think it's fair to say that the 2nd amendment should be updated to specify which kind of guns we're allowed to have instead of leaving it up to interpretation of the words of hypocrites from hundreds of years ago.

I think the important thing is to look at the intent behind the 2nd amendment. It's not there to give a person the right to hunt or shoot at targets; it's there so the people have a fighting chance against an oppressive government. It was written because they had just witnessed it happening to their citizens. The British soldiers were seizing arms from the Colonists in 1774 and 1775. A major provocation for the war was the illegal searching of people's homes and seizing of their weapons.

I think there's a strong argument to be made that citizens should be able to own arms that are comparable to what a military has, based solely on the intent of the 2nd amendment. Can you give a good reason why people would not need similar arms as to those who could oppress them?

My guess is they're fine with it. Included in the pdf, there are letters of support for the ban from regular citizens, that were used as argument in favor of the ban when it was presented.

Also, if you look up the demographics of Deerfield, it's 95% white, strongly Democrat, and the median household income is slightly above 100k a year. Take from that what you will.

https://www.cnn.com/2018/04/05/us/deerfield-illinois-assault-weapon-ban-trnd/index.html

(CNN) - The village of Deerfield in northern Illinois has passed a ban on assault weapons, but it affects much more than sales and manufacturing.

If the 18,000 residents of the Chicago suburb don't forfeit or secure weapons that fall under the ban by June 13th, they will be charged from $200 to $1,000 a day as a penalty.

According to the ordinance, which the the Village Board of Trustees unanimously approved Monday night, it is unlawful for a person "to carry, keep, bear, transport or possess an assault weapon in the Village," except if the weapon is "broken down in a non-functioning state," is "not immediately accessible to any person," or is "unloaded and enclosed in a case, firearm carrying box, shipping box, or other container by a person who has been issued a currently valid Firearm Owner's Identification Card." Law enforcement officers, current and retired, are exempted.

The ordinance makes specific reference to recent mass shootings in Parkland, Florida; Las Vegas; and Sutherland Springs, Texas. "Assault weapons have been increasingly used in an alarming number of notorious mass shooting incidents at public places, public venues, places of worship and places of public accommodation," the ordinance reads.

The authors of the legislation claim the law "may increase the public's sense of safety...not withstanding potential objections regarding the availability of alternative weaponry or the enforceability of such a ban."

---

Deerfield's ordinance sets its own extensive definition of the term. In short, its version of an assault weapon is "a semiautomatic rifle that has the capacity to accept a large capacity magazine, detachable or otherwise." There are other aspects, including rifle additions and types of magazines.

As defined by the village, the term also includes semiautomatic pistols (Stuck's note - these are the military looking, short barrel guns that closely resemble AR's, but are technically considered pistols. This is not referring to your standard pistol like a Glock or whatever), semiautomatic shotguns, conversion kits and "any shotgun with a revolving cylinder."

There's more written in the story in the link above.

City ordinance starts on page 79 - https://www.deerfield.il.us/AgendaCenter/ViewFile/Agenda/_04022018-412

"Firearm Owners Identification" is Illinois' term for a concealed weapon permit, so anyone that doesn't own one and isn't a law enforcement officer, can be fined anywhere from $250 to $1000 a day just for owning an assault rifle. Also, any magazine (not just a rifle magazine) that can hold more than 10 rounds, are subject to this fine.

Also something of interest: I see no mention of compensation in the ordiance for people that are required to surrender their arms. I know under eminent domain, the government is required to provide compensation, but these guns won't be used, rather they will be destroyed. Therefore, people will be out guns, magazines, and money under this new ordiance.

Thoughts?

No, assault rifle is a select fire weapon, usually capable of burst fire, but also capable of automatic fire. It has an actual definition, which the TC did not use correctly in his shitty attempt at classifying a small game hunting rifle as an assault rifle.

Wrong.

http://thefederalist.com/2018/03/31/merriam-webster-online-dictionary-changes-definition-assault-rifle/

Go ahead, argue with the dictionary.

He said "sporting rifle" is useless as a term, and I said that so is "assault rifle" when a bolt action gun with a detachable mag, telescoping stock and a pistol grip can qualify as one. Stop trying to gunsplain. I know more than you.

Lol except the definition Merriam-Webster use specifically requires semi-auto which bolt-actions by definition are incapable of. So does the Assault Rifle ban.

For someone on such a tall soapbox, that is a pretty stupid thing to say.

Too bad the assault WEAPONS ban does NOT exclude bolt-action rifles, defining ALL semi-automatic weapons OR ANY weapons CAPABLE of accepting a ten-round magazine.

Mosin Nagant bolt-action rifles and WW2-era Garands fit this description. The Mosin Nagant is also explicitly named in the assault weapons ban.

But they just want "sensible" gun control!

Sensible gun control for 300-400 murders a year out of a 300+ million population (and that's for all rifles, not just the scary looking ones), while handguns are anywhere from 6k-8k a year. I wish their sensible arguments were at least partially based on facts.

-4 unique Co-op maps that are lengthy. Levels take upwards of an hour to complete. 2 free co-op levels were later added for free.

Blunt weapons trail guns and it's not even close. It doesn't even make sense to make this up. How often do you hear of a shooting versus a hammer murder. Like, do you just skip 100 shooting homicide articles and find one news article involving a hammer and conclude hammers are more common? Again I ask you, how do you come up with this shit?

And also, "personal weapons" like fists, as you termed them also trail guns by miles.

He said "assault weapons", which is true. And that's all rifles, not just the scary black ones.

He's 17. He's not going to debate any ideas. The only stuff he does is with people who he already agrees with and can prop up his opinion.

I don't think people actually want discourse at this point, on either side. They just want to line up and shout at the other side to feel morally justified through their beliefs. People have already made up their minds, and there's really no changing it.

Exactly. The police responded to 30 some odd calls involving the shooter. The FBI received serious and credible tips that he was likely going to do what he did. And then nothing. No in depth investigations, no mental evaluations, nothing. When someone shows violent behavior and says that they're going to kill others, what exactly is it going to take for authorities to believe them?
