As it stands, Layzner is about to dethrone 4 and maybe even 3 from my top five. It's astounding to me that Sunrise could make such a fast-paced, no stock footage show in '85 and then proceed to literally never give a crap about it ever again. Just astounding.

So a bit to my surprise, Layzner is actually fantastic. I wasn't expecting it to suck or anything, but Sunrise+'80s is usually predictable...instead the show has managed to defy my expectations at just about every turn. Really great so far, and if it can hold out for 20 more episodes it might even steal a spot in my top five.

What you need is hand-drawn, shorter stuff. Long series and computer-created shows misuse the techniques in the OP for the sake of simplicity and saving money. Look for under or at 26 episode shows, OVAs or movies, especially in the era of, let's say, '85 to '99.

Cookie, if you heed any rec, then skip Neo vs Shin. New Getter is good, Shin Getter is good, NvS is meh. Best part is the JAM Pro/Mizuki opening.

Started Layzner. Aside from the high expectations of where we'd be ten years from '85 (colonies on Mars), it's actually really unique. Definitely stands out compared to other Sunrise stuff, from the same era and even after.

Made it to episode ten. I love robot shows but ugh. Toei really knew how to ruin a concept.

I think I might re-watch Macross 7 instead. I've got an idea for an article on that I've been meaning to write and shop around, which might be manageable after I refresh my memory on the specifics.
