I must say the one thing I don't like about Octopath's graphics is that the party sprites don't match the enemy's in combat. The enemies will have nice detailed and large sprites while the party just has their map sprites.

The presentation is basically the big draw for most players to Octopath, Retro style without retreating into a lazy presentation. A proper homage with modern SFX.

What is the appeal of turn-based JRPGs? They seem like they're a complete chore.

depends on if they challenge the player or not to me. I find games like Dragon Quest to often be a chore since strategy takes a back seat to grinding. But something like SMT or Etrian Odyssey where grinding isn't as helpful as team building and tailoring strategy to the fight I enjoy quite a bit.

If they remove those at this point, the sales for the series is going to absolutely plummet, in both japan and the west. Its just one of those things that ever since they added it, the series got way more popular and sold more as a result. Just like with fire emblem and its cute girls/wifey focus from fire emblem awakening on up, its going to be a series mainstay at this point.

Besides, There already exists a series from the same developers that has all the (and generally better) dungeon crawl aspects and monster collecting without the social sim.

I understand a meaty attack is timing your attack on the opponents wake up so that only the latter portion of active frames connect, putting the opponent into stun later into the attack then normal, allowing for follow-ups that would not work if the attack put the opponent into stun at the beginning of it's active frames.

So, using a meaty and covering the opponents options in long active frames creates a frame trap, no?
