Turned into a "blue state" is.

Texas has 38 electoral votes now, and it will get more starting in 2024. Texas' estimated population has increased the most by number and by % of any state since 2010.

If Hillary got those 38 votes in 2016, Trump still would have won the election, but with exactly 270 votes. And that map is basically the worst a Democratic candidate could have done nowadays. So with a blue Texas and even more electoral votes, the Democratic candidate will be guaranteed to win essentially every election - possibly starting in 2024.

Are you OK with this?

Many voters vote for parties and not people. Even if the Republican candidate is clearly better than the Democratic candidate, the Democrat would still win if Texas is a guaranteed blue state. .

That's been relevant a total of five times.

What would actually happen, is simply shifting from "red" states vs "blue" states, to "rural" vs "urban".

Not necessarily. Many people don't vote because they think their votes won't count in their state.

It still won't happen though. There would have to be a Constitutional amendment that 38 states ratify.

Id be happy with proportional electoral votes honestly.

You won a state with 75 percent of the vote? You get 75 percent of the electoral votes.

Winner takes all is bogus.

Why would states vote for the candidate that has the most votes in the entire country rather than in their state?

States can do that now, but that means no one would ever get 270. Unless there is a Constitutional amendment the House of Representatives would pick the President instead of the people.

So why not have proportional EC rolled out to all states?

Currently, if Democrats or Republicans have a clear plurality of direct votes in a state, that state votes 100% blue/red in the EC. It should be as follows:

Dems get 60% of a state, Reps get 40% of a state by vote count - 60% of the EC votes go blue, 40% go red.

Obviously if we changed how the presidency is decided, as Antifar said, the Republican Party would change up their strategy to appeal to a more broader base. They would try to go for those who are a little left of the center, but would gladly vote Republican if they changed a few things here and there.

You would see some pretty distinct changes in the social policy of the Republican party, that's for sure.

California was red as fuck in 1980 and 1984, and arguably also 1976. Otherwise, not so much.
It's historically been a swing state, becoming decreasingly so as its population increased.

This is Trump's electoral vote from 2016 if it was proportional

AL - 6
AK - 2
AZ - 5
AR - 4
CA - 17
CO - 4
CT - 3
DE - 1
DC - 0
FL - 14
GA - 8
HI - 1
ID - 2
IL - 8
IN - 6
IA - 3
KS - 3
KY - 5
LA - 5
ME - 2
MD - 3
MA - 4
MI - 8
MN - 4
MS - 3
MO - 6
MT - 2
NE- 3
NV - 3
NH - 2
NJ - 6
NM - 2
NY - 11
NC - 7
ND - 2
OH - 9
OK - 5
OR - 3
PA - 10
RI - 2
SC - 5
SD - 2
TN - 7
TX - 20
UT - 3
VT - 1
VA - 6
WA - 4
WV - 3
WI - 5
WY - 2

Total = 252

So maybe if it's an election like 1972 or 1984 the candidate would get 270, but otherwise it wouldn't happen.
