Straight up battling enemies constantly doesn't give much EXP at all unless facing much higher leveled enemies, and facing anything 5 levels or higher from you is basically a death wish unless you use late-game equipment setups. Doing the generic "collect x items" or "defeat certain enemies" quests are a great start. Even though Tora was a painfully-obvious pervert, he kicked ass in cutscenes when there was in need of action. I do like Riki a lot but I liked Tora a little bit more...though that also kinda extends to Poppi. His artificial Blade ends up getting more characterization/attention than Tora himself does by the end, lol. I also kinda liked Nia a bit better than Melia, if we're to make a comparison. She's a more varied character and is a legitimate foil to Rex's character. The only thing they dropped the ball on is her feelings for Rex, which just came out of nowhere. At least with Melia you could tell she felt something for Shulk after the first few hours with her...but she never had the guts to say so to him like Nia ended up doing to Rex. Most of the other characters in 1 left more of an impact to me though, including villains like you said. As for gameplay I mostly preferred 2, at least with combat mechanics. I can agree that the field skills combined with a gacha system to be able to get past those checks was a terrible idea (should've been a way to guarantee the kind of blade you want rather than leave it through RNG), but the combat felt pretty involved to me. Not being able to move while auto-attacking felt weird, along with the decreased speed, but opening up skills that let me speed up Arts cooldown and let me cancel one Art into another brought up some really engaging battle moments. I still really like Xenoblade 1's combat system, but X did it better to me.
