If Cohen were pardoned, wouldn't he lose the right to remain silent, since he could no longer incriminate himself?

yes

The answer is actually no. Not that it matters.

Can I get a link? Because I'm seeing conflicting stuff on this all over the place. The consensus being that as long as you wouldn't be incriminating yourself in a state-level investigation of the same crimes you would be compelled to testify. Also that immunity could be granted in some cases which would further compel someone to testify even more strongly than a federal pardon.

But I've yet to find a clear cut and definitive piece on the issue.

Again. I speak in common sense while you all just dance around it and act oblivious. Ofc Cohen would be pardoned if he were convicted of something.

But do you think it would be RIGHT for that to happen?

I'm not saying you are wrong and that it's not a thing that could happen, but is it a thing that SHOULD happen?

If Cohen is convicted on crimes he may have committed on behalf of Trump then why should Trump be able to pardon those crimes?

But isn't he under federal investigation at the moment? Or is there a state led component as well? Because I was under the impression it was all federal.

No reason for him to hire an attorney tbqh.

I can't say that I agree.

Cohen began practicing personal injury law in New York in 1992.[9]

A native of Long Island, the 51-year old Cohen graduated from American University and Thomas M. Cooley Law School before moving to New York City to work as an attorney and co-owner of a taxi business.

Cohen also began accumulating Trump-branded real estate in the 2000s. He purchased a $1 million condo at Trump World Tower in 2001, followed by properties at Trump Palace and Trump Park Avenue, drawing public praise from his future boss.

Michael Cohen has a great insight into the real-estate market, Trump told the New York Post in 2007. He has invested in my buildings because he likes to make money, and he does.

Trump hired Cohen later that year as executive vice president of The Trump Organization and special counsel to Trump.

As of April 2018, he is under investigation by federal prosecutors into multiple matters, including bank fraud, wire fraud and campaign finance violations, relating in part to payments made to Stormy Daniels.[2][5]

I can't find out very much else about Cohen's legal "career" as it were, but it sounds like he did some personal injury stuff, he owned a fleet of taxi cabs, he got into real estate, and then he started working with Trump.

It doesn't sound like he's going to be an expert on criminal defense of bank fraud, wire fraud and campaign finance violations.

I'm sure he has SOME experience with those things and a cursory knowledge of the topics, but I'm also sure there are numerous employees who specialize in the defense of those crimes and would be much better suited as his attorney. And it's not like he couldn't afford a good defense lawyer.

The downside to hiring someone that i can see is then he would have to be honest with his attorney as far as what he did or did not commit so his lawyer could properly defend him, and perhaps he would rather not do that.

You can have a point to a joke you are making.

The Moore election showed that for a lot of people morals DON'T matter or he would not have been 2% from a seat on the Senate.

Im sure this isn't an issue, but to be perfectly thorough, you tried multiple different cables to ensure it was the device itself? Because I've been on the same power banks for ages but have run through a bunch of cables.

As far as shopping for a new one i just consider capacity and amperage relative to price.

Ill take a low amperage charger if its got a huge capacity so i can trickle charge devices over a longer period, but generally id prefer a smaller device with 2.1 amps for a speedy refill without feeling tied down.

Ah but you see he was definitely probably beneath the legal limit. So its okay to blame the angry cop.

Also from a quick googling

Keep in mind that a driver may still be arrested and convicted for DUI without proof of "per se" intoxication, when other evidence of impaired driving is shown. For example, a driver with a .06 BAC level can be found guilty of DUI if an arresting law enforcement officer testifies that he observed the driver's vehicle swerving badly, and that the driver exhibited both slurred speech and severe inattention during questioning after a vehicle stop.

So you had 2 shots, got behind the wheel and were observed swerving. Sounds legit.

You asked me what the point of the rant was.

I attempted to explain. What else were you looking for?

I know it wasn't relevant to the initial topic of "boo hoo they made a clerical error", but I have no doubt if the error is that obvious and easily observed that it will be a simple matter for you to have it adjusted.

I am less confident that you realize that what you essentially did in explaining your 3 DUIs was say "well I only committed one 1st degree murder, but the other 2 were only manslaughers".

Maybe that is an extreme analogy, but the point I'm trying to make is you didn't have 1 "real" DUI and 2 "baby" DUIs. You had 3 DUIs and each one is a big freaking deal in the same way that manslaughter is still a big deal even if it's not exactly Murder1.

I hadn't been paying close attention to your legal stuff except to know that something DUI related had happened to you. And my uninformed opinion about it was "well that sucks and that's a shitty thing to do, but hopefully he realizes the severity of a DUI" only to read this topic and see that it wasn't your first but your third. You'll have to forgive me for thinking it's a big deal, because it is.

I was paraphrasing based on your attempts to make it seem like you basically had no choice in the matter. And based on your attempt to make it seem like DUIs #2 and #3 were in a different category from DUI #1. And you don't seem to realize that you are still a significant hazard even if you aren't completely hammered.

In your explanation of your 2nd and 3rd DUI you did the typical "i waited after drinking before driving and only did it because of crazy circumstances and i was technically over the limit but not really".

The driving rant was to say even aside from the fact that your explanation was the same bullshit its also irrelevant. You aren't the only person on the road and you driving impaired not only increases your chance of killing someone but also increases your chance of avoiding being killed by others.

I am apalled at how reckless and shitty other drivers are on the road almost every single day.

Only by being both careful and attentive have i avoided a half dozen accidents caused by people doing illegal and reckless maneuvers in my immediate vicinity. For example some asshat who is currently stopped and waiting in the left turn lane deciding hes going switch to the going straight lane. Only im already in the going straight lane and im going 40 because my light is green and what the fuck this guy pulled out 2 carlengths in front of me while im going 40 and there is literal not enough room to stop in time and only because im spacially aware and had recently checked the next lane over did i know it was clear for me to rapidly move intov allowing me to miss the moron by inches.

Those drivers are presumably sober while they do the things they do.

Even being "around" the legal limit and "not feeling" the alcohol you are still impaired. You are not operating at 100% no matter how much you think that you are. Your reflexes and awareness and decision-making is at the very least fractionally worse than it would be completely sober.

So you can tell yourself that you were 'fine' and you weren't endangering anyone but that is not true. In my example above if i had been just on the legal side of the limit I would have gotten in an accident every single time. Yeah it would have still been their recklessness that precipitated it, but by only driving at my best i kept myself and the asshat out of an accident that day.

Maybe you should consider doing the same or at least being willing to shell out for an uber or cab if all your plans for a DD fall through.

(Psst! Nobody tell Ulti you can do Common Core math with the metric system.)

I was wondering why metric was coming up :/

Metric is better than Imperial, but all that has to deal with is gallons vs litres and kilometers vs miles and stuff like that.

Common Core: "Hey, make sure your kids know [list of things] by the end of 3rd grade. And then next year make sure they know [list of different things] by the end of 4th grade. And then..."

Nothing inherently wrong with that. The issue is that the "end zones" for learning are in a different spots than they used to be and so the curriculum has to be updated to match. This has resulted in isolated incidents of dumbass questionry. (Yes, questionry. It's not a word, but you know what it means)

With that in mind and to keep the analogy going we still haven't seen anything in this topic saying the end zones are in the wrong spot. Just examples of shitty quarterbacks calling the worst plays in their attempt to reach the end zones.

But weren't they arguing not even months ago that Trump had to be a Russian puppet because Putin has "blackmail" on him.

I'm really not concerned one way or the other about that. I think there is enough real evidence in existence and we just need to wait for it to come out. The pee tape or whatever else may exist, or it may not, and it seems stupid to speculate. The existence of a pee tape is not in itself damning. I don't care who Trump does or does not let urinate on or near himself. But what would we damning is if campaign finance laws were flagrantly broken to allow Trump to receive financial assistance from Russia, or if meetings with russian agents did occur and they involved agreeing to the Russian assistance during the election.

Corrik posted...
That said, I think Russia was going to do whatever they could to help a Republican candidate in any capacity during that campaign. They didn't want Hillary in office from what it seems.

Right. The Russian assistance occurred. Their motive did not necessarily have to be blackmail for them to want to interfere in our election.

The question becomes to what extent was Trump knowledgeable about the assistance they were providing.

And with the election being as close as it was it's hard to imagine that their interference didn't actually affect the outcome. It was still legitimate votes cast by legitimate Americans resulting in the legitimate election of Donald Trump. But it upsets me to know that it was aided by targeted interference in swing states and that had they not interfered I think it would have gone the other way.

I am confused. What is the actual democrat position right now? That Trump is a Russian puppet or that Trump has made Russian relations worse than Hillary's no fly zone would have?

This is an odd dichotomy, but my take on it is that Trump did have outside assistance during the election, and that he at least knew about some of the assistance, but that Russia may have provided a great deal of assistance even unbeknownst to Trump. Because from their perspective they have a candidate who owes them in some capacity (tax returns might clear this up?) and it behooved them to go above and beyond to get him in office.

But since then he has not been able to play ball like they wanted. During the campaign he pushed the "we'll be best friends with Russia" angle, but that never picked up traction so he wasn't able to run with it and through the last year of circumstances he just hasn't been able to align himself with them in the same way he said he could during his campaign.

At least that's my impression on it.

The context was in relation to ISIS and announcing what city you would attack next and what time you would begin attacking it.

Nope.

Look at the tweet again. August 28, 2013.

This was regarding the Ghouta chemical attack. The one that took place in Syria on August 21st, 2013.

And in that instance Obama didn't specify any specific targets except to say that we should respond militarily and go after the ones who perpetrated the chemical attack that crossed the "red line" of using such chemicals.

..

This is unrelated to the dropping of leaflets in Mosul in October of 2016. That didn't happen for 3 more years.

And the leaflets were to limit civilian casualties. And if ISIS wanted to abandon their posts (some did) because they knew they attack was coming then so much the better.

.

The bottom line is that this situation he criticized Obama for is nearly identical to this one. Chemical attack takes place. We believe it to be perpetrated by Syria. We announce our intention to intervene.

And in 2013 he blasted Obama for doing the exact same thing he did 5 years later. Well not the exact same thing, when Obama mentioned the possibility of retaliation (which fell through at the time because of too much push back from other legislators) he did it in the appropriate forum and he did it with tact and did not go out of his way to incite the ire of other superpowers.

So that part was different.

At the very least both of them are getting out before the filing deadline to be on the ballot in their respective states. If they had already filed to be on the ballot I would consider the timing to be a lot more suspect right after a RNC lawyer gets raided, but as it is I see no reason currently to connect those dots. Instead I get to watch a 10 inning snooze fest that was only occasionally broken up by the occasional almost-rally that was repeatedly squelched by great (lucky!) catches in the outfield. We scored 1 run and could easily have scored 5+ if on a couple of key plays the ball had just dropped a split second sooner.

There was however one catch by Puig that I'm still not entirely certain was a catch. It looked very much like he had caught it against the ground and that was what ruined one of our numerous chances to get things done offensively.

But on the bright side Kershaw got a no-decision for his brilliant effort so he's still 0-2. Sucker
