https://kotaku.com/sources-google-is-planning-a-game-platform-that-could-1827217387

Over the past few months, the wildest rumors in video game industry circles havent involved the PlayStation 5 or Xbox Two. The most interesting chatter has centered on a tech company thats been quietly making moves to tackle video games in a big way: Google, the conglomerate that operates our email, our internet browsers, and much more.

We havent heard many specifics about Googles video game plans, but what we have heard is that its a three-pronged approach: 1) Some sort of streaming platform, 2) some sort of hardware, and 3) an attempt to bring game developers under the Google umbrella, whether through aggressive recruiting or even major acquisitions. Thats the word from five people who have either been briefed on Googles plans or heard about them secondhand.

Google has been exploring video game initiatives for most of the decade. In 2014, the company was reportedly poised to acquire Twitch before Amazon swooped in. Rumors percolated for years that Google was also attempting to launch an Android-based console, similar to Amazons Fire TV, but that didnt happen. In 2016, the Google-incubated studio Niantic scored one of the biggest gaming successes of the last decade with Pokmon Go, but it had spun out into an independent company the year before. And Google has a long history of hiring game developers for projects that never quite materialize.

In recent months, however, the chatter about Google has gotten louder. At the Game Developers Conference in March of this year, Google representatives met with several big video game companies to gauge interest in its streaming platform, which is code-named Yeti, sources said. (The existence of Googles Yeti was first reported by the website The Information earlier this year.) Google also took meetings at E3 in Los Angeles a few weeks ago, those sources said, and from what weve heard, the company is looking not just to woo game developers to the Yeti service but to buy development studios entirely. (Google did not respond to a request for comment.)

So what is this streaming platform, exactly? Like Nvidias GeForce Now, the Google service would offload the work of rendering graphics to beefy computers elsewhere, allowing even the cheapest PCs to play high-end games. The biggest advantage of streaming, as opposed to physical discs or downloads, is that it removes hardware barriers for games. Games like Call of Duty can reach a significantly bigger audience if players dont need an expensive graphics card or console to play them. As one person familiar with Yeti described it: Imagine playing The Witcher 3 within a tab on Google Chrome.

Sounds too good to be true, doesnt it? Or sounds too much like the promise of other streaming platforms like OnLive, which failed because of lag and video compression that reduced quality? Many of the rumors weve heard need to be presented with some skepticism until we actually see them in action. One pie-in-the-sky idea Ive heard floated, for example, is heavy integration between Yeti and the Google-owned YouTube. Imagine youre playing a game and you run into a tricky boss or dont know how to solve a puzzle. Instead of opening up your laptop or checking your phone for a guide, you could press a button to activate an overlay on your screen that cues up a YouTube walkthrough of the game youre playing.

Whispers have been quieter about Googles hardware, whatever that may look like, but the rumors weve heard suggest that it will link up with the streaming service in some way. Were not sure whether Google is looking to compete with the technical specs of the next PlayStation and Xbox or whether this Google console will be cheaper and low-end, relying on the streaming service to pull weight.

Inspired to make this topic by The Crew 2, which I love. The map is ungodly huge, and just cruising around taking screenshots is really relaxing and enjoyable. But reaction from fans and critics has been much more mixed, and a lot of people are pointing out how there just isn't a whole lot to do in this big world at launch. Ubisoft has set out a "road map" for post-launch content, but right now I totally get why other players feel it won't keep their attention.

Honestly, one feature (which was in the DLC for the first game and has been teased as a possibility here) would make this a 10/10 game for me. But I can't really argue with the people who are pissed that this game doesn't have PVP at launch

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/former-ice-spokesman-james-schwab-opens-up-about-resignation-trump-administration/

In his first television interview, former Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokesperson James Schwab has opened up about why he abruptly resigned in March. But his interview with CBS News' Jamie Yuccas on Wednesday was unexpectedly interrupted by agents identifying themselves as agents from the Department of Homeland Security Inspector General's Office.

Before the surprise visit, Schwab told Yuccas that both the Obama and Trump White Houses asked him to "spin" information. But he said he felt compelled to resign after the current administration told him to lie about an incident that pitted the government against Oakland's mayor.

Back in February in the month leading up to Schwab's resignation, tensions in the San Francisco Bay area were running high over a series of raids carried out by federal agents with ICE. With the guidance of his superiors in Washington D.C., it fell to Schwab to communicate with journalists about those raids. The day before the operations took place, Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf warned the community about the operation -- a surprise to Schwab.

"She was putting your officers' lives, potentially, in danger?" Yuccas asked Schwab. "Correct," he replied.

"We ended up arresting 232, which is 16 percent higher than our highest estimates. So internally, that was considered a success. But what they publicly said was that she let people go," Schwab said. According to him, that was not true.

He helped craft a statement to the media saying, "Some of them were able to elude us thanks to the mayor's irresponsible decision." He was comfortable with that statement, he said, because it included the words "some of."

"This is a spin statement. This is what every public affairs officer does," Schwab said.

A week later, Attorney General Jeff Sessions' language was noticeably different. He said "ICE failed to make 800 arrests" because of the mayor's statement. Sessions' words didn't sit well with Schwab.

"Completely false...that made me extremely uncomfortable," Schwab said.

When reporters asked him to clarify the discrepancy, Schwab said he was instructed by his superiors in Washington to simply refer to the original statement he drafted without disputing Sessions' version of events.

"After they failed to correct it it's a flat-out lie. They know it's a lie. It was just shocking to me that no one wanted to fix that," Schwab said.

Troubled by what he saw as public deception, Schwab turned in his resignation.

"I could not fathom staying at an organization that was OK with lying to the American public. I hate that."
...
During the interview at his home, some three months after he quit, Yuccas and Schwab were interrupted by a surprise visit from men who said they were agents from the Department of Homeland Security Inspector General's Office. He was "completely shocked" to see them.

"They just said that they wanted to talk to me about the leak with the Oakland mayor," Schwab said of his conversation with the agents.

"Did you ever contact the Oakland mayor's office?" Yuccas asked.

"No. I've never met her before. I never contacted Libby Schaaf," Schwab said. "Never. I would never tell her. I would never tell anyone...They were very serious. He was very stern with me, and it was concerning."

Schwab said it was "absolutely" an intimidation technique.

"Why, three months later, are we doing this?" Schwab said. "This is intimidation. And this is why people won't come out and speak against the government."

https://www.nbcnews.com/business/economy/what-did-corporate-america-do-tax-break-buy-record-amounts-n886621

The Republican tax reform package that was supposed to raise wages and spur hiring has instead funded a record stock buyback and dividend spree, benefiting investors and company executives over workers.

President Donald Trump signed the bill in December last year, saying the corporate tax cut would make it favorable for companies to bring back into the U.S. cash stashed in foreign operations.

"More than 70 percent of this [tax cut] will be returned to workers," said White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders at a January press conference after the bill came into effect.

However, companies have instead used the extra cash to spend billions of dollars buying back their own stock, boosting the value of shares held by investors. Buybacks reduce the number of shares on the market, immediately increasing the value of the shares that investors already hold.

Over the past year, S&P 500 companies have given their shareholders a record $1 trillion in the form of buybacks and dividends, led by Apple, Cisco Systems, and other technology giants.

Stock repurchases hit nearly $190 billion in the first quarter for the S&P 500, according to preliminary results from S&P Dow Jones Indices. The last time that record was set was just before the Great Recession, when companies bought up almost $172 billion of buybacks.

Compounding the issue is a recent study by the Office of SEC Commissioner Robert Jackson that found that a stock buyback announcement often leads to a short-term stock price pop, which corporate insiders use to cash out their shares.

"I think its high time the SEC reexamine its outdated buybacks rules, said Rob Jackson, a commissioner at the agency.

Labor market expert Harry Holzer, a professor of public policy at Georgetown, told NBC News that he and his colleagues aren't surprised that the corporate tax cut's main beneficiaries haven't been workers.

"Productivity has been lousy in the U.S. since the dotcom boom ended, but companies have seemed to not need high productivity to have high profits, so they don't have incentive to invest in their workers or in capital," he said. "Throwing more money at them to lower corporate taxes is not something that will solve that problem."

Repatriating cash from overseas or a windfall from lower tax bills has given many companies a surge of capital to put to work," Greg McBride, chief financial analyst for Bankrate.com, told NBC News. "There is little argument that wage growth has been the most sluggish aspect of the economy recovery.

Some companies did use part of the tax cut to give their employees a one-time cash bonus, allowing them to benefit workers without raising the company's fixed costs. However, employees pay a higher tax on bonuses as supplemental income.

Average hourly pay has risen 2.7 percent in May from a year ago, but it's not as fast as the surge in corporate profits.

One solution might be to access the $2 trillion in excess reserves currently in the banking system, suggested Louis Hyman, an assistant professor at Cornell University's School of Industrial and Labor Relations, in an email.

"Instead of focusing on tax cuts, we should be focused on ways to get that capital invested in growth industries that employ ordinary Americans," said Hyman.
