Worse than just eating a combo, a failed switch usually means a wasted assist, generally followed by your defenseless assist getting caught in a combo or super. Basically throwing the match.

Offline I've had it happen once or twice due to my own screwup. I would say one in every 10 online quick switches are successful. It's a shame because it's just one little thing, but it's doing SERIOUS damage to my opinion of the game.
