The single-player content is limited. There's a bunch of arcade options which might correspond to difficulty levels, the world's shortest combo challenges, and then there's story mode. I haven't tried the story but it looks to have branching paths and some form of leveling up, so that's something.

My friend has been non stop complaining about the story mode for the last 2 days.

Xenoverse The story mode in Fighterz is ok.
