I will say this though

The first star-level male athlete to openly come out as gay while they're still in their prime will be at least in the same rarified air as Robinson.

If they had done so 20 years ago I'd even put them in the same conversation.

I was thinking Kaepernick is more along the lines of Tommie Smith and John Carlos doing the black power salute at the Olympics.

Jackie Robinson is the greatest hero in sports history. I wouldn't give any other major league player hero status just for playing on the field, but he's the exception. That'll be tough to match.

when people see them protesting the flag the thought isn't racism. it's what the flag symbolizes - america. that's first and foremost the direct connotation and their intent doesn't translate well, which continues the spiral of "this is stupid."
