Any time the game throws a "boss battle that you're not supposed to win because of storyline purposes" at you but doesn't make it obvious that you're not supposed to win. I remember wasting countless items in the first battles against *Tales of Symphonia spoilers* Kratos and Yggdrasil only to find out that the outcomes of both of those fights didn't matter at all. Winning the first fight is possible but very difficult and gains you nothing by doing so, and winning the second is pretty much impossible outside of insane NewGame+ bonuses and still gains you nothing by doing so. But how was I supposed to know that the first time through?

FF9 is even worse with it. You can't just lose you have to deal enough damage or last a certain amount of turns and then lose.

With no indication of such a mechanic at all.
