Not a technical recession as of yet, but I think disparity accelerated post pandemic as the wealthy were better able to weather it and then capitalize off it. A sudden surge of price inflation and then increased interest rates to combat that has all worked to depress the quality of life for middle and lower classes.

The windfall for the upper class though coupled with higher prices has kept the money moving in the market at a consistent level.

So not exactly a recession, but we will need a new word or at least one I don't know currently to explain the evaporation of quality of life within the lower classes.

Possible theft, remember there is no guarantee that the money is in place anymore, the actual account information is not public. Wouldn't be the first people to "borrow" funds to make investments and think they will just put it back before anyone notices.

Broadly speaking, some evangelicals believe that Jewish people returning to Israel following the 1917 Balfour Declaration, a British statement which called for the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people, was key to end times, when God will purge sinners and Jesus Christ will return.
John Hagee, an evangelical pastor and influential founder of Christians United for Israel, explained the prophecy to TBN Networks in December 2022.
God is getting ready to defend Israel in such a supernatural way its going to take the breath out of the lungs of the dictators on planet Earth but we are living on the cusp of the greatest most supernatural series of events the world has ever seen ready or not.
Hagee said when Jewish people are present in Israel the clock starts ticking on the rapture.

I think if Johnson were the pick a week or two ago that he might not have had the votes, but people like Buck are now willing to walk back their principles.

Basically this, if Johnson gets in then the moderates caved, but want to save some face by it not being Jordan that they already openly opposed. So now they can pretend that Johnson has some unidentifiable quality that makes him acceptable even though he is essentially the same as Jordan.

That rule with only one member being able to vote out the current speaker needs to be kicked to the curve sooner than later. I'm assuming Kevin McCarthy already made the record books for shortest speaker term.

To be fair, that had always been the rule, the Democrats only changed it in 2019 probably from expecting that the Republicans would just bring a constant stream of votes on Speaker that were always destined to fail in an effort to prevent anything else.

I'd hardly call it a trap, Democrats have no power in this situation. Hell, if Jeffries somehow managed to win the R's will just immediately vote as one and oust him. The R's have to figure it out or have enough of them just decide they have had it and the caucus is done and they will go vote with Dem's for the time being.

Also, people in general please stop the hand wringing about the government shutting down. This is a Republican House, we were always going to be shutting down for at least a few days this year. Nothing was going to stop that, they aren't willing to align with the Dem's and the victory margin is too slim to overcome the R's that ran on destroying the government.

You may know the answer to this or not: can the current speaker pro tempre bring a temporary funding bill for the government to the floor? Because to me that will determine whether this is a bad thing or not.

By rule he cannot, but Congress is a whole "Who watches the Watchmen" situation, so there isn't really any way to stop it if he does other than every one freaking out and shutting it down. But if he brought it up and they voted then nothing would stop it. Even someone suing over it would take years to wind through the courts and who knows how the SC might go then, but given that it is budget they wouldn't try to undo it in any way. Hell, I actually think they might rule that if the House voted to pass what was brought up that was the same as voting to expand the pro tempore powers to allow for them to have brought it up in the first place.

Imagine if some Reps actually voted for a Dem, how that unhinged base would react.

It'd be nice, but it's not happening. I think they're legit afraid for their lives if they did that.

Yeah, no R is voting for a D here, it would be a literal life risking proposition. And I don't think there is any R that the D's would trust to follow through on any concessions made verbally to them, so I think we are likely stuck with the R's having to figure it out and get everyone in line.

Only other out I could see is if the shutdown is going with no end in sight the D's just pick the least reprehensible R in the pool and push them over the line.

Relevant section 8.b.3.A --
In the case of a vacancy in the Office of Speaker, the next Member on the list described in subdividsion (B) shall act as Speaker pro tempore until the elction of a Speaker or a Speaker pro tempore. Pending such election the Member acting as Speaker pro tempore may exercise such authorities of the Office of Speaker as may be necessary and appropriate to that end.
That's the applicable language about whether McHenry already has the power. You could argue it either way but if McHenry chose to exercise the full powers of the job I think it's unlikely that he could be stopped by anything other than a permanent speaker being elected.

It definitely can not be read either way, but it has a dependent clause like the 2nd Amendment, so point to Republicans for their continued lack of English comprehension. "to that end" is referencing the election of a Speaker, so the pro tempore's powers are limited in scope to aiding the election of a new speaker, full stop.

Yes, some colleges are way too expensive, but there are plenty of lesser expensive paths out there. A simple teaching of risk/reward analysis to help a young adult understand what their realistic career future looks like and to determine whether going into debt for half a million dollars is a good idea for that liberal arts degree would have went a long way.
