It's weird how Halloween became a Choose Your Own Adventure story. In one continuity, Lori Strode dies and Dr. Loomis carries on the fight. In another continuity, Lori battles her brother 20 years later and is eventually killed by him. In yet another continuity, Lori battles Michael 40 years later, eventually killing him, and they're not related. Plus, there's the Rob Zombie continuity and the one where Halloween is a movie in-universe.

Anyway, I only had time for one film in the franchise. Since I started working at a hospital this year, I chose the one with the hospital setting: Halloween 2. I must say, the nurses are highly unprofessional. I can't believe Jimmy stroking a sleeping Lori's hand was supposed to be endearing. If I'm in a sleeping patient's room, I try and wake them or else leave as quickly and quietly as I can. Plus, you have the two personnel that are willing to leave babies unattended so that they can go and have sex in the hot tub. Excuse me, water therapy pool or whatever they call it. (Why did that thing have a "scald to death" setting, anyway?)

It's kind of a shame that Halloween Ends is terribad. If it had been as good as the 2017 movie, it would have been an ideal movie to close out a 31 day horror movie marathon. "Halloween Ends."

Also, I had no idea that the George W. Bush-lookin' dude from the recent trilogy was the same guy that got burned to death by the police in Halloween 2. At least members of one profession act in the movie the way that they do in real life.

If I remember correctly, the original G'nG was released to arcades within a week or two of Super Mario Bros. hitting the Famicom. It's interesting to think that they were under production at the same time.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/2/9/4/AAdlC_AAE_Ke.jpg

Both have a short, fur-faced hero rescuing a beautiful princess from a fire-spitting monster. And when you get to Ghouls 'n Ghosts, tell me this rock turtle isn't a Koopa:

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/2/9/5/AAdlC_AAE_Kf.png

It's interesting to think that Super Mario Bros. receives credit for essentially inventing the side scroller. (Even though the first two Pitfall games came first.) It makes me wonder how the history books might have been different had Ghosts 'n Goblins been released first. Super Mario Bros. would have always overtaken it for popularity. But it's interesting how close Capcom were to having the "first" major side scroller.

He definitely is, you're right. If Batman is, he is.

For characters with super powers, the formula for being a superhero seems to be as follows:

Mask + Gadgets = Superhero

Zorro and the Lone Ranger wear masks, but lack gadgets. Therefore, they are not typically regarded as superheroes. James Bond has gadgets, but does not wear a mask. He is never regarded as a superhero. Characters like Batman, Iron Man, and the Green Hornet are normal action heroes who wear masks and use gadgets. Therefore, they are superheroes.

It's kinda funny to think that the thing that keeps Zorro from being a superhero is the lack of a magnetic pocket watch or a fountain pen that shoots a grappling hook. I'm curious if giving a Captain America shield to a masked character without a super soldier serum would constitute a superhero.

Its crazy how one of the most memorable scenes in the movie that was loved by most of the critics you seem unnecessary. The coen brothers seemed it necessary. Crazy how you know better than them

It's a good movie, but it wouldn't hurt the film at all to leave that scene out.

Doe posted...
This scene is important to the Coens' take on their Minnesota home and how Marge fits into it. A big element of the film is how a culture of pleasantness can lead people to retreat inwards in how they handle their problems ironically leading to the breakdown of communication between people. Yanagita is on like two layers of facades in this scene and Marge herself has hid her meeting from her husband and isn't even sure what she wants out of it.

I can respect that, but I'm still going to fall back on what I said to Cole. It wouldn't hurt the film at all to cut that scene out.

This is something for which there is no set rule.

If you have an all-White cast, you really need to diversify it. Sometimes, that means a race change. Other times, it means writing a character out, or demoting them to a cameo, so that a new character can have their spot. What I don't care for is when it gets in the way of a character's signature look or when a character is completely recharacterized to fit their new identity. To me, that's not being the same character. But, again. You can't make every character's look their iconic signature look. It just can't work that way.

I'm a fledgling writer and my casts are diverse. I would not like someone making changes to them even though I realize that is a possibility. (I'd much rather have an adaptation and receive royalties though than not have it adapted at all. Let me make that point clear.) When it comes to adapting an older story in which everyone is White -- Dracula, Robin Hood, King Kong, etc. -- I would not hesitate to change a character's ethnicity or introduce new characters to fill out a cast list. If that's hypocritical, that's hypocritical. But the needs of diversity and inclusion are more important than making sure that every character keeps their arbitrarily assigned looks.

Fargo is a great movie, btw.

I'm not trying to knock it as a film. I just don't feel that the scene/subplot was altogether necessary. Then again, the Coen Brothers are kind of anti-filmmakers when it comes to convention. If they want a five minute scene of someone sitting on a park bench feeding pigeons, they will take every second of that five minutes to show that person feeding pigeons.

He says in the interview that you quoted that he got a pushback for the character being stereotyped. I'm glad that he found the character refreshing.

Either way, the scene is still unnecessary. Marge is a cop. It's kind of her job to consider the possibility that an individual with a financial stake in the matter might not be entirely honest.

Hearing an Asian name and predicting a character archetype says more of the audience than it does the content.

Fuck that noise. I've been watching Asian cinema since I was 6 years old.

I wanted Yanagita to be a character who was treated decently, but I knew from the phone call that he wouldn't be. There's nothing off about the initial call. It's just one friend contacting another to congratulate them. But I had a suspicion where they were going with the character and they confirmed it quickly.

Ask yourself this, why did the creepy friend need to be Japanese? The cast is 95% White. Why did the one character of Asian descent have to be the creepy friend from school who lived with his parents and lied about a sob story to try and steal another man's wife? I'm not saying that the Coen Brothers are prejudiced. But that doesn't mean that they can't still play into stereotypes. A lot of the time, what feels right for a character can be playing into a stereotype. And it can be done without even knowing it. That film was more of a symptom of a greater problem at the time.
