Presumably professional athletes are aware of the risks associated with their sport. If a boxer accidentally kills his opponent from repeated blows to the head, should he be charged with manslaughter? What if a pitcher lets a fastball slip out of his hand wrong and he beans the batter in the head?

I don't know what happened in this specific case, but I'd be careful with opening this can of worms.

Boxers have died in the ring, and no one has been prosecuted. I don't know baseball, but cricketers have been killed by legal fast bowling aimed at the head (Phil Hughes, for example), and no one has been prosecuted. Every week, players are injured in every sport and no one is prosecuted.

If this was an accident, it wouldn't be prosecuted. If it was a standard move/a regular part of the game, it wouldn't be prosecuted.

If the decision is made to prosecute (and that's still pending), it will be because it is believed that there is sufficient criminal recklessness involved.

If this idiocy was in effect in the NHL about 45 players would be behind bars in the last month.

Literally a "how to kill Hockey in one fell swoop".

They decided to make an arrest after an investigation into the circumstances of this particular incident.

Dozens of professional sportspeople get injured every week, and no one goes to jail. Hundreds of hits, tackles, and head-high bouncers (cricket), that don't lead to prosecutions. There is no slippery slope.

If the police/prosecutors determine that there are legal grounds for a charge of manslaughter, should they let it slide for the sake of ice hockey?

Say a dirty back check knocks a guy into the boards and he ends up paralyzed, or a batter gets smoked in the head with a fastball causing a significant loss in brain function or something awful like that. Would the victim be able to sue the checker?

I'm fully in favor of better helmets and neck guards and all the details here. But if people want to start suing for bad sports plays, dirty or accidental, does this not open those doors? (Or are they open already and nobody's bothered to actually go that route? I don't actually know).

You're argument is that they shouldn't prosecute an action that results in death because it may lead to the prosecution of actions that lead to severe injury?

I didn't mean to imply that, but I should have been more clear. Apologies.

Just saying that certain crimes have people saying they hope it happens to those in jail. For example when Jared from Subway news came out those type of comments were happening toward him.

And if you don't join in with those comments you get accused of 'supporting' those crimes.

I think it depends on what crimes was committed. There seems to be a different in reaction to a child molester or rapist getting beaten up or raped in jail. And that happening to someone that robbed a bank for example.

I've seen some pretty awful things wished on people who committed non violent property crime.

Nevertheless, (and it feels weird to have to say this) no one should be raped and beaten in prison. Advocating that would just be endorsing the violent sadism of the perpetrators. Which is what people are supposed to be opposed to.
