I think you're stuck on "both game devs and music devs are responding to the market", which as I said is trivially true. The difference is game devs intentionally push hardware such that you literally can't play a modern game on an older system, and this is desirable by gamers.

You originally responded to me in post #21 by disagreeing that gamers look to buy newer technology to enjoy innovations in games that their old tech can't play. I'm telling you it's true for a significant number of gamers in a way that simply isn't for music listeners. On top of that, gamers with weaker hardware generally still aspire to have more updated hardware, while music listeners are often skeptical of the hi-fi niche.

It quite literally isn't. The premise of the topic is music producers are targeting more widespread, less powerful/precise audio equipment. If it was the same, then the Starfield devs would be throwing shade at people with a 4090 for feeling that the graphics aren't next-gen enough.

well yeah, but that's not really in contention. The difference is you don't need to buy a certain hardware set of headphones to listen to a certain song, and your library of songs isn't limited by your hardware set of headphones. Music consumers don't have an expectation that they need a pair of Beats to appreciate Dre's new album.

There's a significant market of both say AirPods users and over-ear headphone users, and music distributors want both groups to know their equipment is just fine. Meanwhile you have the developers of Starfield throwing shade at players' hardware for reporting performance issues.

Most people don't want high end, they want accessible. Which is what audio producers are doing.

A ton of videogame marketing is about advances in technology, yes. PS5 SSD is a recent example. Ratchet & Clank was sold on the instant loading speed of switching dimensions. A lot of gamers may not get their hands on the latest cards (and current numbers are skewed by the supply issues with advanced cards in recent years), but they certainly think about them. Music is fundamentally different on that front, you don't buy the newest Drake album or Beats by Dre headphones because of the state of the technology, you do it because you like the artist's style or the branding.

I see your logic but they are pretty different markets. Most music consumers don't buy stuff to experience the latest developments in audio quality.

Well IDK then sorry. Being real, most notable JRPGs are decade+ old IPs too, the question of innovation isn't new intellectual properties and concept art, but what any individual game brings to step up gameplay.

Well, okay. Now we're running into another problem: how do we define RPGs? It is really one of the more nebulous terms in gaming. When we say action RPG, we can include Dark Souls in that category, but it's really questionable how much DNA and ancestry Dark Souls shares with Final Fantasy as a video game. Really Dark Souls is reaching further back to ADnD, its mechanics and aesthetics.

Based on the OP I imagine that tweeter's core representative of a JRPG is Dragon Quest or Final Fantasy, not Dark Souls. In that definition of an RPG, a "party" is an inseparable component of the genre. I'd say a better name for this genre is "Four Dudes in a Row". Cuz isn't that what we're talking about, really. The OP is about what the four dudes in your row can look like. Yakuza: Like a Dragon is part of the Four Dudes in a Row genre.

For platformers, the number of them made is low, but the innovation in new ones are still great. Platforming naturally lends itself to dynamism and creativity and nuance. Four Dudes in a Row needs to be able to put four dudes in a row.

I'd say strategy RPGs are fair game to be claimed as a Four Dudes in a Row subgenre, because the dudes you're strategizing are typically important to you and selectable (eg Fire Emblem).

But anyway if you like RPGs more than dudebro shooters then of course you'd prefer the RPG. My point is not to compare the subjective enjoyment level of genres but the fact that shooting games have found far more variety and adaptation than RPGs have. Only so many shooters are 'dudebro shooters' bit RPGs are more homogenous.

To the topic tweet: cool character designs aren't enough to save JRPGs from the fact they're largely incredibly derivative and repetitive. If you feel like JRPGs 'fell off' it's probably because most entries into the genre have failed to do anything above the capability of the NES.

Look at how action games and platformers have evolved over time. Meanwhile, Dragon Quest 11 literally has the option to play the entire game as a SNES game.

A lot of the most beloved recent JRPGs do so practically in spite of their core jrpg-elements rather than because of them. EG, Persona 5.

every design on the cover art is a little outdated. Everyone looks a bit better and softer in-game, and a big feature of BG3 is the great face animation for companion dialogue.

You could cast Daylight on Shadowheart's active weapon and then have her switch her weapon before clicking on it, that will work. If you cast Daylight on the environment then the ONLY way to get rid of it to my knowledge is to long rest, which means you will have to fight Cazador again.

If you kill Cazador but then leave and long rest, he will indeed be at full health outside his coffin when you return. I learned because the first time I killed him, the spell Daylight was lingering and canceled the dialogue with the siblings (and free-standing Daylight can only be removed by a long rest). This also means you don't see Astarion cry in grief/joy after stopping the ritual, and you won't get the Woe staff.

Glad I went through the effort because the scene is worth it. I love this game and I think Act 3 is great on paper but I'm seeing why a lot of people have been discontent, late game content is damn easy to break.

Also funnily enough you don't get a relationship boost with Astarion if you help him complete the ritual. May point to the corruption becoming a vampire ascendant does to him

There is a running theme that she gets more comfortable with Faerun as the game progresses. By Act 3 she's remarking positively about flowers and trying out making jokes. Maybe she's just growing a conscience. She is in the process of picking up the pieces of her shattered worldview.

Whenever you dismissed a party member, they now automatically gave you

• All 'orange' items (quest items)
• Their alchemy bag
• Their camp supply bag
• Their Keychain
• Maybe other stuff

In addition to cluttering your main character's inventory, all this stuff has weight. Especially with quest items, you can have something from a long since completed quest be marked as that and stuffed in your pockets.

It just made juggling party members even more tedious than it already is.

Thank God I have no idea how that shipped. All the playtesting must be done with high STR

Anybody pretending not to be able to use or comprehend 'singular they' in English almost invariably has an agenda at least in the US. It's not even like there's only been a push to use the word recently for acceptance. It's outright a useful word to refer to, for instance, a singular subject with an unknown gender, and has been in common usage for at least decades. Don't pretend the natural thing is to say is "he or she", have you been outside? They is what people say, they don't use three syllables to say what can be said in one.

I just tried Arcane Battery from the "Markoheskir" legendary staff. It's supposed to make your next spell not cost a slot, but I used disintegrate and still lost my lv6 spell slot as well as the arcane battery...
