(14) Oerba Dia Vanille (FFXIII) --VS-- (11) Kefka Palazzo (FFVI) - 18-25 In a battle of recent winners, our most recent SMFFFC champ bows out after a respectable run to the Quarterfinals. According to the Final Fantasy XIII Ultimania Omega, the development team at one point considered making Vanille the official main character; however, they dismissed the idea as they had already released a trailer and art featuring Lightning in that role. (10) Auron (FFX) --VS-- (2) Cecil Harvey (FFIV) - 34-9 Auron began this match on a 20-0 runand never really bothered looking back. Cecil is one of the few characters in the series to permanently change his job during the game, starting out as a Dark Knight, but after a trial and the battle with the first of the Four Elemental Archfiends, transforms into a Paladin. --- Don't mind me. (1) Claire Lightning Farron (FFXIII) --VS-- Barret Wallace (FFVII) - 16-26 This match was actually tied at 15-15, but in typical Barret fashion this contest, he finishes strong with an 11-1 run to eliminate our number 1 seed and top character in stats. Lightning holds the honor of being the first true mainline Final Fantasy female protagonist. Terra Bradford from FFVI is argued by some to hold this honor, but the developers stated that no one in that game was truly the main character. Of course, theres also Yuna from FFX-2, but thats technically not a mainline game. Yuna (FFX) --VS-- (13) Cloud Strife (FFVII) - 18-23 Speaking of Yuna, she was unable to hold onto her early lead as Cloud stormed back to claim the victory. Yuna is one of two Final Fantasy characters to have heterochromia (irises of two different colors), the other being Ravus Nox Fleuret from FFXV. Yuna is also one of few Final Fantasy main characters to be of mixed race, other examples being Cecil Harvey from FFIV, Terra Branford from FFVI, and Aerith Gainsborough from FFVII. This victory for Cloud marks his third straight victory over an FFX opponent, defeating Lulu, Rikku, and Yuna in that stretch. What a ladykiller. --- Don't mind me. I'm just here for the contest. |

guffguy89 11/07/23 12:11:27 AM #265 | Some fun facts from Round 4:
We lost 4 champions in Round 4, bringing the total to 18. There are still 6 champions alive going into the Quarterfinals, keeping them over 50% of the remaining field. FFVII, FFX, and FFXIII have 2 entries each left in the tournament. FFIV and FFVI have one apiece. The two remaining non-champions havent even made it to a SMFFFC final before. Thoughts: There are a few characters whose strength is a mystery to me. Like Cecil. Hes had maybe the easiest path to the quarterfinals, but things are about to get a lot tougher for him going forward. Lightning is also a bit of a mystery. Shes had a bit more stiffer competition, but Im still unsure of her strength. She could go out next round or make it to the finals, and Im not sure Id be surprised at either result. Auron is continuing to look strong as a lot of people predicted early on. But that Kefka/Vanille matchup is going to be interesting, and the winner of that could give Auron his toughest test yet. --- Don't mind me. I'm just here for the contest. |

(26) Locke Cole (FFVI) --VS-- (10) Auron (FFX) - 15-29 Locke's original design was a slightly older, dark and mysterious character. He was supposed to be a partner and rival of sorts to the male character that developed into Terra Branford, and wielded a "magic sword". As development proceeded the ideas of a foil to Terra that wielded a magic sword were transferred to Celes and her runic ability, and Locke's personality was tweaked and he became the more "regular" character he is in the final game. (15) Edgar Roni Figaro (FFVI) --VS-- (2) Cecil Harvey (FFIV) - 19-25 Edgar's alias "Gerad" is an anagram of Edgar. His alias in the Japanese version of the game is (, Jefu, lit. Jeff). guffguy89 11/06/23 5:59:28 PM #231 | I get it. It makes sense for him. He still gets to be close to his family while making a boatload more money and managing a team on the rise (while the Brewers will likely be on the decline, if not in full rebuild mode). It still is just dirty.
This guy grew up and lives in Wisconsin. He played for the Brewers. Got a front office job after retiring, and then was kind of given the reigns to the team, almost experimentally, when the Brewers were kind of lost as an organization in the mid 2010s. Completely turned things around and turned the Brewers into a perennial playoff team and a NL Central powerhouse (though they never really got National recognition for being one). The manager being deposed, Ross, is also somewhat of a fan favorite in Chicago with deeper ties to that organization. So yeah, it definitely feels greasy all around. Well, as a Brewer fan, if I can say anything bad about the guy, it's that he's gone 1-9 in the last 10 postseason games. As great as a manager he is in the regular season, and especially September (Craigtember), I think he tries too hard in the playoffs, and deviates his managing style from what makes him so great in the regular season. --- Don't mind me. I'm just here for the contest. |

guffguy89 11/06/23 5:28:42 PM #228 | What the fuck? Craig Counsell is leaving the Brewers to manage the Cubs! This is like Brett Favre to the Vikings all over again, but only worse. My goodness, he could've gone anywhere, but chose to go with the Brewer's most-hated team that didn't even have a vacancy by the way! They literally just kicked Ross out of the role to get Counsell in it. He's going to be the highest payed manager by a mile. I am sick.
Well Cubs...fuck...enjoy a really good player's manager that will probably do really well there. But just be warned that as good as he manages in the regular season, he sucks in the postseason. Overthinks things way too much and pulls pitchers way too early....I'm reaching at straws here though because he was a really good manager and a good person and it just sucks that he would betray his hometown team like that. --- Don't mind me. (3) Squall Leonhart (FFVIII) --VS-- (14) Oerba Dia Vanille (FFXIII) - 19-20 The top dog in newstats misses out on the quarterfinals, as he falls to our most recent champion, becoming the 17th champion in total to be eliminated. Squall's weapon, the gunblade, is one of the iconic weapons of the Final Fantasy series. The gunblade was designed by Nomura who was into silver accessories at the time and wanted Squall to have a silver weapon. Nomura wanted some new way for the player to control the weapon in battle, and with both ideas combined, came up with the gunblade. Nomura says it has a rather odd appearance in retrospect. (11) Kefka Palazzo (FFVI) --VS-- (27) Yuffie Kisaragi (FFVII) - 26-15 Both Yuffie and Vincent were going to be cut from the game due to lack of time, though Tetsuya Nomura and Yoshinori Kitase vetoed it, and they became optional characters as a result.Yuffie becomes a full-fledged party member in the FFVII Remake. --- Don't mind me. (28) Tifa Lockhart (FFVII) --VS-- Yuna (FFX) - 19-21 The only matchup in the Sweet Sixteen not to feature a champion in it went down to the wire, but Yuna prevailed in the end. Tifa has a history of doing well in contests though, and not just on this site. She was voted as the fifth-best female character in video games among GameSpot readers in 2000, ranked as the 19th-best video game character of all time by Famitsu readers in 2010, and the ninth-best Final Fantasy character in the All Final Fantasy Big Vote in 2020 (though it should be noted that Yuna came in 2nd in that Big Vote). (13) Cloud Strife (FFVII) --VS-- Rikku (FFX) - 22-19 Sticking with the subject of character accolades in random internet contests, Rikku won the award for "Hottest Character" in G4's 2004 G-Phoria awards show. In the same year, Rikku won the "Viewers' Choice: Baddest Good Girl" on G4's Video Game Vixens. Oh, and remember that All Final Fantasy Big Vote I mentioned earlier? Our 16th champion to fall, Tidus was originally going to be an undead in early plot drafts, but this was changed due to the release of the film The Sixth Sense, which had a similar plot twist. guffguy89 11/02/23 3:31:22 PM #190 | It's an early sample size, but there's definitely some panic brewing in the Bucks community. And it's not even centered around the slow offensive start of Dame and Giannis, it's centered around our horrible defense so far. Adrian Griffin, a defensive coach, came to Milwaukee and completely overhauled our defense with his trademark "crash-in" defense, which, by the way, is very exploitable, and completely underutilizes our bigs Lopez and Giannis.
Lopez was a Defensive Player of the Year candidate last year and Giannis has won it in the past. One thing Milwaukee's former coach (Coach Bud) did was utilize those guys effectively on defense. Last night, Lopez and Giannis had just one defensive rebound each. Pathetic, really. Outside of our defensive woes, it turns out we found out who can stop the Dame-Giannis pick and roll. The Bucks can. By not using it. Dame looks like a guy still looking for his role on this team and his poor shooting and lack of shooting is likely a result of that. Giannis is also acting a bit more reckless than usual to start off the season. Thankfully, just a few games in, and maybe everything will mesh soon, but definitely some warning lights popping up. Good news is that Bucks are in full "win now" mode so if Griffin doesn't get it together, he'll be gone by season's end, or sooner. --- Don't mind me. I'm just here for the contest. |

guffguy89 11/01/23 11:58:48 PM #207 | Day 27 Results:
(3) Squall Leonhart (FFVIII) --VS-- (30) Laguna Loire (FFVIII) - 22-12 Laguna was originally planned to appear in Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep, and a scenario was planned where he would be the one in charge of the Mirage Arena. However, due to his inclusion in Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy, he was left out. (19) Zack Fair (FFVII) --VS-- (14) Oerba Dia Vanille (FFXIII) - 15-21 Our 10th champion ousted, Zack was chosen as the protagonist in Crisis Core -Final Fantasy VII- primarily because of his pre-determined fate. Kitase later said that his story had "been cooking for 10 years" as conceptual artwork and backstory already existed for him in Final Fantasy VII, despite him only being a minor character. (11) Kefka Palazzo (FFVI) --VS-- (22) Adelbert Steiner (FFIX) - 26-11 In the French version of the game, Steiner is named Edward Adelbert Steiner, Edward being a more common first name that French people would know better than Adelbert. Whatever his name is, he is our 11th champion to fall, though it should be noted the last two matches were both champ vs champ. (27) Yuffie Kisaragi (FFVII) --VS-- (6) Zidane Tribal (FFIX) - 20-18 In this back-and-forth battle, Yuffie was able to step on Zidanes tail at the last minute and take the victory. And yes, Zidane does have a tail in case youve forgotten. The only time Zidane uses it in game is when he evades Steiner on the cargo ship, demonstrating the ability to hang from it. He is our 12th champion to fall. --- Don't mind me. I'm just here for the contest. |
