I think it's pretty useful actually? I like seeing aggregate snapshots of what games people consider to be the greatest of all time. If I wanted to see a unique list of someone's favorite games I'd just ask literally anyone on board 8, I know you fuckers got opinions.

The list is boring because "greatest of all time" isn't a phrase that gives a shit about interesting individual opinions, it's going to be something that's forged by consensus, so of course the list looks like consensus.

Oh give me a break. If this aggregate list of peoples' favorite games matched mine completely it'd just be fucking weird. Though I didn't mean to say it like ANY year in which my GOTY matches is bad - I think BOTW is also my favorite game of 2017. It's not weird that it happens sometimes, but if it happened every year I'd feel like I wasn't cultivating my own interests very well. Like, I'm not sitting here fuming over the fact that everyone likes TLOU and I don't - who gives a shit?

Like, sure, I like when games I like are also liked by other people, but I think it'd be much more strange if my tastes DIDN'T diverge in some way from the most mainstream possible opinion than if they did.

Eh, I don't know about that, I haven't committed to playing it, it's just a question I had that I wanted answered at some point

I'm not even the biggest fan of Disco Elysium personally but I think of all games in the last five years it is the most likely to stick around on future top 100's, it's very unique and well-made

I wouldn't even want my favorite game of any given year to also be the aggregate favorite of a year, I want to have my own personal tastes

If I've never played Bioshock before, which one should I play - the original or the remastered version? I have both of these in my Steam library and I'm not sure which one is better. Keep in mind that I am perfectly okay with 'old' graphics - the original, unmodified Half-Life looks just fine to me. If the original is the more 'pure', untainted experience I'd probably prefer that, but if the remastered version is really just a strict upgrade then I'd probably prefer that.

The top 10 is almost entirely made out of games that just aren't my thing at all, but then I saw that they have Outer Wilds at #30 and the list is completely redeemed

Nearly all of these movies sound like an absolute nightmare to watch

Helping smaller franchises would be the benefit to a NCU though, right? A major advantage of the MCU is that it brings attention to otherwise D list franchises like GotG nobody would have cared about. If Nintendo can hypothetically bring people to invest in a Smash movie (and that's a major hypothetical), then people will turn out for a Kid Icarus movie.

Maybe but I think that's a huge gamble. GotG worked not just because of its pedigree but because it a type of movie - a sort of Star Wars-esque space fantasy comedy - that people really wanted to see and were willing to buy into. Kid Icarus just isn't gonna have the kind of mainstream appeal necessary. I don't think you can sell it, even if all us video game nerds think it's a good idea.

Aside from Mario and Pokemon I think Zelda is the ONLY other franchise that has both the name power and the conceptual juice to really work. Everything else is too hard to sell to people who aren't weird video game nerds like us.

I can see the world where the good Kid Icarus movie exists but I think it'd flop.

Aside from Mario/Donkey Kong, you've got Zelda, Metroid, Kirby, Star Fox... Kid Icarus? Animal Crossing? Splatoon? I'm already being really generous here, since Kid Icarus and Star Fox are basically dead franchises (I'm not even bothering to mention F-Zero, fuck it) and Metroid would be a really tough fit - I could see Samus being a kind of straight man who's just taking her mission really seriously while everyone else is making jokes but that's about it.

There's Pokemon, but it's kind of its own thing and I have absolutely no idea what its legal status would be here.

Like I don't know, I'm just not seeing it. I want to see a Zelda movie for sure, but beyond that I'm not sure what you would do and I'm not sure how you would have them all team up and have it still be cool.
