And they've walked it back. No more retroactive application, ToS protections, no fee at all for Personal users, doubled the cap for Personal from $100k to $200k, and Pro/Enterprise users pay the lesser of 2.5% of their revenue or a flat fee per install, based on self-reported data, and only starting after $1 million. Roughly as expected, since this looks significantly more reasonable next to the outlandish original proposition than it would in a vacuum, and I'm guessing the executives bought back their shares before making this announcement. I guess we'll see if they burned too many bridges with the original proposition to win people back.

Depends what you're using it for. Truffles tend to be closer to 2:1, if if you're using it as a sauce going as low as 0.5:1 isn't uncommon.

rjsilverthorn posted...
the only time I've seen butter used is if you are starting with milk instead of cream.

I've seen some recipes mix soft butter in after the ganache has cooled a bit to give it more of a shine and a smooth texture. That's explicitly not a matter of melting it, though, since you're waiting until you can just cream them together.

Gr8M8 posted...
Premium ingredients are used, for the sake of taste.

Most of those "premium ingredients" aren't going to amount to much because mixing them together in a cake will mask whatever flavours make them "premium." Himalayan salt in particular isn't going to amount to anything in a cake, turbinado sugar is going to be completely indistinguishable from regular brown sugar when mixed into a cake, the higher fat content of duck eggs (the only relevant consideration for cake) can be achieved by just substituting a couple yolks for one of the whole eggs, and you aren't going to be able to taste a difference between goat and cow buttermilk. Also, coconut sugar tastes awful, and Chantilly butter cream (frosting made by folding whipped cream into American butter cream) is an absolute bitch to make because it separates if you blink too many times (and doesn't taste good enough to justify the effort). Just stick with regular whipped cream and get around the structural concerns by piping the cherry filling and whipped cream in spirals between layers.

Why don't you actually make these recipes instead of asking people to refine your AI model for you?

It's more than you probably should be drinking, health-wise, but whether or not it's "abuse" is more a matter of whether or not it's become a dependency. Take a break for a while and see how you feel. If taking a break is hard, make it more than a break and make a serious effort to cut alcohol out of your life entirely, because you're at a serious risk of becoming an alcoholic (if you aren't there already). If taking a break is easy, you're probably okay for now, though hold on to the philosophy of periodically making sure that you can indeed quit.

There are certainly mental health issues at play among many of the more obsessive fans, and that's a problem, but that's a problem that can and should be tackled without taking it out on sex workers. Sometimes it isn't. Sometimes it is. You've made this argument before, and it hasn't gotten any less ridiculous. DRM restricts how software can be used. An OS is an intrinsic requirement to use the computer at all.

Think of DRM like a lock: It prevents you from opening the door unless you're supposed to (or bypass it). Without a lock, anyone can open the door. The OS is more analogous to the doorway. It's needed to go through the wall. Without a doorway, you can't go through the wall, not because you aren't allowed, but because you physically can't.

Not really. There have been like 10 people arrested for hate speech country-wide in the last three decades, and every single one of them had it coming. Hate speech laws are applied very sparingly; the whole "muh free speech!" thing is thoroughly overblown.

"Illegal protest" is more a matter violating laws as a core element of the protest, such as blockading critical infrastructure. It's nothing to do with the content of the protest.

There are a lot of adults like this that literally refuse to eat anything but junk food garbage... and yes that is generally a result of lazy parents who let their kids eat whatever would get them to shut up the fastest. It's not the result of eating disorders. It's spoiled children who grew up with parents that never allowed them to expand their taste beyond nuggets

Have your tastes not changed as an adult? Have you not acquired new tastes, or tried something you thought you weren't big on in a context that you did enjoy? Why, then, do you insist that these adults are set in their ways purely because their upbringing never forced them to branch out?

Being spoiled as kids explains how they got there. It doesn't explain why they stay there. Being adamantly unwilling to try anything else or unable to enjoy it is absolutely disordered eating. That generally either suggests anxiety around trying new things or some manner of addiction to the things they do eat (which other foods don't satisfy, which is particularly relevant with high-sugar stuff). Maybe their parents are to blame for that. Maybe not. It doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of focusing on results and not self-righteous finger-pointing.

@adjl

Spoken like someone without a toddler lol. Sure, I'm not letting them starve but if you let a toddler get their way with food all the time they'll just be eating cookies and mac n cheese and shit. I'd argue it's abusive to give a toddler junk food instead of being patient and making sure they actually eat a well balanced meal. When i see parents with 10 year olds eating garbage food i feel bad for the child. Spoiling your child like that is literally abusive. You can actually give them all sorts of dietary issues that may not show up until adolescence or adulthood

And on the flip side, if you categorically refuse to tolerate pickiness, you're masking potential legitimate mental health problems and often actually making them worse in the long run than if you'd been more willing to acquiesce. Like most parenting, it's a matter of balance: Trying to cultivate healthy eating habits but also respecting what your kid wants and being aware of when there's a more serious problem than a kid just wanting cookies for dinner. For some kids - especially those with more serious problems that the parents just don't have the resources to recognize and treat - that balance is significantly harder to strike than for others. Categorizing all grown picky eaters as failures of "weak parents" ignores that. Some are. Many - more than most people realize - are more than that.

Beyond that, though, whatever the reason for somebody being a picky eater as an adult, it's not something you're going to fix by resenting them/their upbringing, and trying to force your friends to eat things they don't like is a dick move. If you want to fix the problem, try talking to them about it to understand why they don't like things and/or how they feel about it. That might help you find new things they can enjoy exploring, or it might give you a basis to encourage them to seek therapy for a disorder, or it might just give you a better understanding of what their boundaries are so you can respect them and avoid putting them in circumstances where they aren't going to be comfortable. Whatever the outcome, that's a whole lot more beneficial then "just eat the food you baby."

It likely wouldn't sell well enough to warrant developing not only hardware that could handle it without killing the battery life (the 3DS did it with two superimposed screens, and a second screen is energetically expensive to run), but also the appropriate firmware-side solutions for applying the effect retroactively to games that weren't designed around it. Even then, applying it retroactively like that probably wouldn't look too great, so you'd just be left with a handful of new titles that would actually try to take advantage of the feature, but that's still not overly worthwhile because the Switch 3D's install base probably wouldn't be large enough to justify it. Toss in that the feature would be utterly useless for anyone that only plays docked, and it's just not a worthwhile endeavour.

I'd argue that threatening starvation as an alternative can fall under the umbrella of "beating." It is, after all, using physical pain and harm as a punishment to effect the behaviour you want. Sure, there are cases where there literally isn't anything else to eat and insisting that the kid eat something they don't like is a matter of necessity instead of a voluntary decision, but even then there's ample room for parents to work with children to understand the pickiness and work through it instead of just forcing them to eat something they don't want and hoping that makes them grow out of it.

Picky eating is a symptom of an underlying eating disorder significantly more often than most people think. It's just more socially acceptable (especially for men) to be picky than to attach some sort of anxiety or trauma response to certain foods, so that's what most people jump to when labelling the behaviour, and the individual in question will generally go along with that instead of trying to explain it (especially where they've likely been labelled as such since they were young and never had an opportunity to consider further explanations).

What bugs me is that policing absences directly like that is completely unnecessary. Performance metrics exist. If you're concerned that somebody's absences might be affecting their work, just look at their work and appraise that. If their work is fine (including them being available when other people need them), there's no problem. If their work isn't fine, then you've got a problem and should frame your discussion with the employee around that instead of arbitrary attendance management.

Stripping it out when it's already there and done, which probably took more work than f***ing leaving it in, is a crime.

I'd guess file size issues played a role there. They were both two-disc games to begin with, and when you throw updated visuals on top of that and try to cram both games into a single card, I could believe that finding room for dual audio (or more, in Europe's case) was a problem. And then rather than making multiple single-audio versions of the game, they just made the one and slapped the pre-existing translated text onto it. Toss in that the first game's voice acting was so bad and that it would just be weird to have one game voiced in English and not the other, and I can kind of understand taking the easy road.

Odds are, though, they started from the Japanese version of the game, so they didn't have to take the English audio out.

They literally did a Direct the day it released and couldn't be bothered to include a 30 second, "hey, this game is out today!" notice. It's f***ing pathetic.

A Direct that included a montage of recent/immediately upcoming games, no less, so it could have been more like 5 seconds. That is a little weird. There were quite a few other new RPGs in the direct, so I'm half wondering if they left it out to avoid stepping on third party toes.

My girlfriend worked in the HR department of our provincial government for a while doing filing, and she came across a ton of instances of people having to attend "attendance management meetings" because they exceeded some arbitrary threshold of absences. Those meetings, however, were set up automatically with a department completely separated from where they were actually doing work, and the vast, vast majority of them were cases where their managers had approved the leave and already made the appropriate arrangements to ensure continuity of service. In every way, it was just a bunch of micromanaging bureaucracy that wasted everyone's time for no actual gains.

And in a lot of cases, negotiations have been ongoing for a while with companies resisting making changes that would benefit workers, and it's just come to a point where the exploding cost of living is too much for workers to bear. That means taking drastic action to force companies to stop dragging their feet.

That just gives me even more reason to believe that they're intentionally tanking the company, if their own employees are distraught enough about the fallout to threaten the company.

I find it bizarre that they included full English on the Asian physical release, yet (apparently) aren't doing a physical release in North America.

It kind of makes sense. Physical distribution is much more expensive in North America than in other regions, thanks to the lower population density and inexplicable abandonment of everything the industrial revolution did for transportation infrastructure. For a relatively high-risk rerelease (neither game sold all that well, and while the Switch having five times the GC's install base and Monolith being a very highly-regarded studio following Xenoblade's success give it potential to do much better than that, that's still not exactly encouraging performance), I can understand going with digital-only to eliminate the potential for stale inventory.

Marketing for this game is completely non existent. No NA physical release. No presence on the eShop. No critic reviews. It's like they want this game to flop.

NoA putting zero effort into a Monolith RPG release, such that any success it sees is due purely to fans promoting it and/or actual promotion efforts in other reasons? Must be a day that ends in Y.

They did at least announce it in a Direct, though. That's something. Still, the parallels to Xenoblade 1 are pretty hard to miss. That one succeeded in spite of their best efforts, eventually turning into a flagship franchise, but because NoE localized it first, that created a norm of having most of the voice actors being British and NoA gets out of paying for them. I guess that's what they're hoping for here: If it succeeds, they get a bunch of money for doing basically nothing, and if it ends up being revived into an actual franchise, the precedent has been set of fans being okay with JP voices and NoA can just cite that as an excuse to similarly put no effort into future installments. Not sure how that works with Bamco being the IP holder, but it seems pretty par for the course with how lazy and risk-averse NoA has been when it comes to big JRPGs.

Not really. Sure, the AAA space is a bunch of derivative bandwagon-hopping, but that's nothing new, and I've had zero difficulty finding things I want to play/have fun playing.

obligatory if someone is going to blow you up they won't tell you first

Depends on the context. In this case, the threat could be intended to coerce them into reverting the change. It won't, obviously, because the people with the power to make that call also have the power to hide themselves until the threat blows over, but it's not entirely inconceivable that a genuine threat could be telegraphed like that.

On a side note, I could 100% believe that the threat was staged to try and win the company sympathy points and diffuse the backlash.

I mean, I can kind of understand it. For studios that have been working exclusively in Unity for years and have multiple projects out in the world but haven't been successful enough to have enough assets to absorb a catastrophe, retroactively applying fees like this stands to bankrupt them and destroy their livelihoods and those of dozens of employees. That's a very big deal, to the point where it's actually kind of easy to sympathize with wanting those responsible for that ruination dead.

Of course, there's a world of difference between threatening a Unity office and random staff and threatening Riccitiello and other decision-making executives. The latter are the ones actually responsible for destroying lives. The former are also probably having their lives destroyed by this, given that I suspect the company's getting dumped after the executives take whatever bonuses they can out of it, and they have zero responsibility here.

ttyd is goated but doesnt particularly benefit from a hd remake that much, s*** looks good on the GC its paper lmao

It doesn't particularly benefit from a graphical update, but it's also been 19 years since it came out with no rerelease. I'd prefer if they just did a GC virtual console deal instead of remaking so many GC games, but given that it hasn't been officially for sale for longer than I'd been alive when it first came out, I think a rerelease is well-warranted.
