Focus on that rather than dunking on a TV show or implying that it would be in anyway justified or acceptable to have that reaction. I'm sure you'll say you're not doing that, but by focusing on the TV show rather than the population susceptible to fascism, you're furthering right wing narratives. What's the solution here down this path? Stop certain people from creating TV shows? Stop TV shows with brown people in them? That would be giving them what they want and wouldn't fix anything.

The only way to fix the true problem is to eliminate the conditions that draw people to the right, the ones that cause a reaction to a TV show to be fascism.

The fundamental flaw is that regular season basketball doesn't really matter. It's actually worse for players to do really well in the regular season if it doesn't come with postseason success. See LeBron, Chris Paul, Harden at various points in their careers. It then just becomes about doing the bare minimum to at least make the playoffs, maybe win some awards, but all of that is balanced against the risk of being injured.

There's too many games and too many borderline irrelevant teams as well, which exacerbates all of this.

This could be helped by significantly fewer regular season games (like 60 or something) and a meaningful and prestigious midseason single elimination tournament.

Easier said than done because it's something YOU don't care about. So of course it's easy to make a statement like "omg just don't buy the game and you're automatically trans allies!" when it reality it's always going to be more grey than black and white like how those who are judging others here are putting it. If you're put into a position when it's something you enjoy and the thing or the creator gets cancelled for being racist/sexist/etc most people will normally go against their principals and ethics to enjoy the thing they like, it's normal human behavior. But nope, because you want to put judgement that me and my wife aren't true trans allies because we're buying a video game day 1 that most likely JK Rowling will only receive a small percentage of royalty anyways.

You can share your principals and ethics to others no problem. The moment you start to shame/guilt others because they don't share the same principals and ethics like you is where I draw the line. Fuck you if you do this shit, that'll be my judgement.

So are communities not supposed to hold each other accountable? There has to be some actual content, some conduct associated with being an ally right? It can't just be "I call myself one and therefore that's all there is to it." If we don't check each other, how do we move forward? My view is that in a situation where a large portion of the trans community is telling me not to do something, telling me how it hurts them, and me already seeing what Rowling chooses to do with her platform, I think allyship at least includes listening to them and trusting them.

I've never said they're not allies in general. I'm sure there's a fair number of LGBT people who are buying this game. I'm saying that if you're an ally and you hear the voices of trans people telling you not to buy it and why and you ignore it, that's not good allyship in this instance. I don't think that should be controversial. It's not up to me or within my power to permanently revoke allyship. I have no interest in commenting on allyship in a wider sense, beyond shitting on white moderate types.

But if I bought the game and a trans person was hurt by that and told me so, I don't think I'd have a valid response. What would your response be in that situation?

The same applies to all the other things that have been discussed in this topic. Just because we frequently ignore our conscience or simply don't agree on what's important/essential doesn't mean that's good or we'd be able to look that child laborer who mined the minerals for our iPhones in the face.

Like the second biggest movie of 2022 is Top Gun Maverick. A movie headlined by the worlds most famous scientologist. Rallying against scientology has lost its popularity of sorts so nobody seems to really care about that anymore but we're still talking about an objectively harmful group of people. But Tom Cruise also makes some of the best action movies around. So they're going to be successful. Avatar 2 also has controversy regarding cultural appropriation so there's discussions around boycotts there too.

Netflix is clearly fine with giving millions to Dave Chappelle who also has similar anti-trans views. They're outright stated they will continue to do so. So we could all stop subscribing to the most popular streaming service on the planet in support.

The gaming hardware of Xbox, Playstation and Nintendo all have direct ties to slave labor in third world countries too.

I respect people who are willing to boycott companies over these things. But I also can't blame people if they don't. As an individual these things are going to succeed regardless. People go to these things to simply be entertained. Not to make statements.

It's overall always going to be a hard to ask people to specifically not go for things that would give them entertainment and happiness. Especially if there's not going to be any real impact with what you're choosing to do as an individual.

Is it selfish and lazy? Well yeah. But honestly a lot of us...maybe deserve to be a bit lazy and selfish sometimes? I don't know what the answer is. But people can't really be expected to be righteous about everything. It isn't going to work. At a certain point people are just going to start phasing out all of these controversies as noise.

I agree with all of this essentially. It's pretty hard to do it all the time in all cases. I'm simply responding to the arguments for not doing so in this specific case which I find mostly pretty disingenuous.

We can't let ourselves go completely numb though because that's how you get a permanent hell world. I would much rather a world where everyone got up in arms about every injustice than one where they're all perpetuated indefinitely. It would be annoying and time consuming, but in the long run, better. Because after a while, I think it would push us to work on principles and systems rather than fighting individual fights.

You're conflating two different arguments from that post. I'm saying that people who issue ultimatums when criticized or threaten to withdraw their (likely nonexistent) support over being challenged aren't useful. Not that buying a game or eating Chick-fil-A means you'll stand by as people are rounded up.

Those are two different groups. Non-ideal allies are several steps up from full on white moderate types. Buying this game puts someone in non-ideal status due to the outcry and low cost of just not buying one game. It takes responses like the one Tmaster is talking about to get into the white moderate club.

The difference is that those are essential for modern life and part of the global exploitation of capitalism. There's hard questions to ask and answer there. People every day contribute the bad people profiting off their bad actions and yet it's a video game that people are pretending they actually care about the money going to.

It's not about the people being alienated suddenly becoming transphobes. It's about people who would otherwise join you in your support being alienating away from supporting you, because you would rather make a nothingburger over a game purchase.

This argument is why I included the part about MLK Jr. That's exactly what he was talking about. Not instances where pushback made people who weren't racists become racists, but people who said "I can't join you in your overall cause of equality because you made me mad or affected my life or implied I might have done something wrong ever." Your elaborating just clarified how applicable it is.

Maybe don't go assuming people who want to enjoy the new Harry Potter game are bigots.

I never said people who buy this game are bigots. I've only said they're not being good allies in this instance. Not buying this game is the rock bottom bare minimum for allyship and many can't even seem to do that.

If you guys want to play internet activist where you attack people for not conforming to your movement in the precise way you want, don't be surprised when you don't have people wanting to help you.

Again, talk to a trans person about this if you think it's purely internet activism and doesn't affect the real world. If you are turned away from the trans rights movement by...a trans person being hurt that you would rather buy this game than listen to them, I don't think you were ever part of the "pro" calculus for the movement.

Movements don't tend to count on people issuing final ultimatums over light criticisms. How could they ever expect such a person to really go to bat for them when things actually get difficult?

This quite literally a case of people doing performance activism where the outcome doesn't matter and it allows people to pat themselves on the back for doing nothing.

And at the end of the day all you are accomplishing by attacking people looking to buy and play a video game is to alienate them from the cause you care so much about.

There's far better things you could be putting energy into. You could start rallies for trans rights. You could talk to your representative about trans rights. And when anti-trans laws are enacted, you can go start protests. All those things are more likely to net positives for the trans rights movements than attacking people over a video game.

I don't think it's performative to not put money in a bigot's pockets, when the concerned group asks me not to do that. I think not buying a game I might have otherwise bought shows a willingness to make the bare minimum of sacrifices for my professed values. I think it shows support for a community under attack. Why do you consider that performative? That outcome certainly seems to matter. Why don't you go ask a trans person why it matters to them?

If someone can be swayed to become a transphobe or away from equality because they were asked not to buy a videogame, they were already a transphobe or what MLK Jr. would have referred to as a "white moderate" and they are already part of the problem.

There's no reason to assume I don't already do those things you listed, because oddly enough, I do. It's literally my day job. And I'm sure the people who are asking others not to buy this game are far more likely to do each of those things than the people saying it doesn't matter, while claiming to be allies.

It seems weird to me that people are minimizing potentially putting more money in Rowling's pockets or giving the impression that her anti-trans activism will have no impact on her brand or bottom line.

It seems little different that buying a Kanye album or Yeezys in 2023. For people that claim to be allies, you could buy so many other things and get equal enjoyment without doing something that you know many trans people feel bad about. The upside is just one videogame among countless others, while the downside is making trans people feel like there's no consequence for going after them.

Seems like a fairly easy decision, and yet so many have spent a ton of energy trying to convince LGBT people that they're overreacting on this one.

That seems like a lot of money to most people and is more than doctors get paid in other countries. You'd need a good story for why you need significantly more. Being paid at the low end of a scale with an entire range that's beyond what most people could dream of making won't be enough. You gotta bring in schooling costs/time and working conditions and explain why others should be in solidarity with you.

How much money do you want? If you feel you are still underpaid or have unacceptable working conditions and can articulate that to the public, you'll be supported. If they perceive you as greedy or entitled, they won't. It depends on the facts and your ability to sell them.

The reason you haven't seen that support is because doctors as a class are perceived as closer to bosses than workers, and don't exhibit much solidarity with other workers, instead setting themselves above and apart. When we hear from doctors as a political group, it's often to shut down some type of reform to the healthcare system.

You're doing exactly what you're telling others not to do. Propping up young men by trashing progressives. This ignores that it's only a specific subset of young men that go down this rabbit hole. The common denominator is those men and the culture they grow up in and seek out.

There are several left wing channels that focus partially or entirely on helping young men out of the alt right rabbit hole and giving them more positive. Contrapoints, Hbomberguy, and InnuendoStudios off the top of my head. That's actually one of the biggest criticisms of BreadTube/LeftTube. That it focuses far too heavily on shitty dudes, their fears and misconceptions, and coddling them rather than focusing on marginalized groups or shifting power.

If these aren't as popular with young men, maybe that's because these channels ask them to do some tough introspection and to improve as people, rather than telling them that actually everything is women's/minorities/immigrants/the government's fault? Not to mention the bias of algorithms towards bigoted, controversy producing content, and their funding by corporations and wealthy individuals.

It's a fully rational strategy with an extremely high upside, of course people are going to do it. You'd have to fundamentally change the incentives of drafting and competition to get a different outcome.

No amount of tongue wagging about competitiveness will change that because people can truthfully believe this IS their way of being competitive. If you're not the Lakers, if you're Milwaukee, Charlotte, Orlando, OKC, Indiana, generational players are never coming to you to create a super team. The draft and player development are the only way for them. In basketball, especially modern basketball, one player can change everything, they can be a system unto themselves, and you basically can't win without a unicorn, if not two unicorns.

The only exception during my lifetime is the 2004 Pistons, and "simply have the greatest defensive team ever" is a wish, not a strategy.

Modern basketball has proven that when there is a LeBron, a Jordan, a Doncic, a Durant, it is in your best interest to be in a position to get that player, by hook or by crook. Or you can suffer the fate of being eliminated by that player for 10 years straight.
