Oh, absolutely. I want the TSA to violate my nuts and my ass whenever I want to leave, and it would be a dream come true if some undertrained jarhead with a badge beat the shit out of me because he didn't like me and kept his job because people respect his job more than the people he targets.

And I hear that the chances of me being shot jump right through the roof, which is an appealing prospect no matter which way you spin it. Really, how could I not want to uproot my life and move to one of the COVID hotspots of the world?

One time I posed the question of whether you wipe your ass standing up or sitting down, and he turned it into a full-on debate over which one was better because he wiped standing up and most of us wiped sitting down. Like clearly it's a stupid question in the first place, it's not a serious query on which to be judged, but he took it really personal as if it made him look like a freak and tried to turn it back around on us.

Like if you responded to his dislike with indifference or anything approaching a defense, he'd tell you to say something you liked to eat less than soup. For some reason, he could never let it go, and he kept fucking bringing it up and trying to get people to agree that soup is bad.

So what's your opinion on soup, CE? If you like it, do you have a favorite soup? I think it's fine for the most part.

literally using lives as an excuse to underpay and mistreat employees

scummy

Whenever there's a strike, there's always a contingent of people who go after the strikers for being selfish or causing harm to others by walking off. Teachers are disadvantaging kids by striking, fuck them. People are dying because nurses are walking off, fuck them. I won't get my mail in time because mailmen and railroad workers are striking, fuck them.

You don't realise that this wouldn't be an issue if the health sector in NYC was run efficiently and competently. And I'm not just talking about if they had treated their nurses better to prevent them from striking - there appears to be no contingency plan, no buffer. If nurses striking leads to mass discharging like this, then the sector as a whole - the bulk of the labor, the work that not only keeps patients cared for but keeps hospitals in business - is kept running through the hard work of nurses.

If there's no contingency plan outside of those nurses doing such a good job, why are nurses being overworked and underpaid? Or, if I'm overestimating the worth of nurses - why don't they have a backup system to fall back on, even if it's less efficient than the way things are run now?

With that being said, it's obviously bad that this is happening. Sick people need to be cared for now, and that's not happening because of this strike. You can look at it one way and think of the striking nurses as heartless harpies who are putting lives at risk out of greed, or you can see it another way: whatever the nurses are striking about is extreme enough that they would take such a drastic measure.

So, what are nurses striking for? As per the following article (https://www.healthcaredive.com/news/new-york-state-nurses- seven-hospitals-strike-2023/639560/):

Nurses in New York want new contracts to ensure adequate staffing and support for staff, including improvements to stem widespread turnover and burnout, the union said in a release.

The deal reached at NewYork-Presbyterian includes terms to help recruit and retain more nurses, according to the union, though further details have not been released.

Nurses want adequate staffing and support for staff. This is on top of an ongoing pandemic that's been going for three years where they became more essential than ever, but didn't see the gratitude expressed through disembodied applause and by the media labelling them as "superheroes" manifest in better pay or better treatment by their employers.

And that's just what that article says; this Guardian article (https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2023/jan/03/ nurses-strike-new-york-city-hospitals) goes into more detail about improving wages in line with inflation, as well as maintaining health insurance coverage which these hospitals want to cut.

Keep in mind, those things they're arguing for would improve the standard of care for patients. And I shouldn't have to say how essential it should be to pay your employees a living wage.

Going on with the first article - because frankly, I built too much of this post on that article alone:

Nearly 99% of nurses voted in favor of authorizing the strike, according to the union.

99% of unionised nurses voted to strike for adequate staff and better support.

This strike didn't pop up overnight either. The union had to meet to discuss terms, union members had to vote, the terms had to be solidified and notice had to be given. As per the article:

Nurses delivered an official 10-day notice to the systems that they intend to strike on Friday, and contracts expired Saturday.

Meaning, hospitals knew things were about to get rough almost two weeks before the strike started. They could have set temporary conditions for nurses to work under while unions and employers negotiated terms that everyone would be happy with. They could have come to an agreement while negotiations were still ongoing, if they were amenable and committed to a resolution.

Keep in mind that hospitals are negotiating AGAINST adequate staffing and supporting their staff, but the fact remains that they had notice and they could have taken some course of action to delay the strike, keep nurses in a job and keep up the standard of care for patients.

Instead, they let the contracts lapse, and the strike began.

Now, you're hearing about all the poor sick people who aren't being treated right. You think it's sick that nurses would abandon their posts and let people die and let the sick go untreated.

The hospitals affected by this strike could have taken action weeks ago, and they DIDN'T. Where are the headlines painting them in a bad light? Where are the people calling them sick for letting their patients go untreated for not doing the bare minimum to stay operational?

This entire post happened because I couldn't find an image I'd saved that summed up people's attitudes towards striking way more succinctly. The same applies to teachers and railroad workers, people neglect their needs and then demonise them when people aren't taken care of. Consider what it takes for people to take such a drastic measures, and think about how you'd like to be treated.

By all means, let a hospital grind you into the dirt for inadequate pay, keep you working ungodly hours by failing to hire enough staff and call you a monster when you decide you've had enough.

Recently, a YouTube content creator I followed years ago came out as trans. In the comments of her most recent video, there were people feigning concern for her wellbeing by mutilating her body - not just with surgery, but just by injecting hormones. When someone hit back at them over that, they dove into a rant about big pharma making people think they need to change their body chemistry to be happy and how it was an evil practice that mutilated people and tightened the grip that pharmaceutical companies have on the world. It's the up to date version of "sheeple", and the way these jackasses try to be "politically correct" about is is by expressing concern over mutilation, even when the trans people they're commenting on are perfectly happy.

We're already seeing queerness getting legislated away as perverse, as "grooming" children and for being oversexualised. But what people either don't realise or are actively ignoring is that it was never going to stop there. When queer people stop being a threat to children, they begin to be a danger to themselves - poor, misguided souls being manipulated by a medical industry that wants to chew them up and spit them out. And thus, For Their Own Safety, we need to legislate away the ability for queer people to make decisions that affirm their existence and determine their future as queer people so they don't "make any mistakes" and wind up being unhappy for the rest of their lives due to those decisions.

If you think that's altruism, giving them more time to lock in such an important decision - well, first of all you almost certainly don't understand the age limits that were always in place before this, specifically the years of therapy necessary to gain a medical certificate to get gender-affirming surgery after a transgender person turned 18. Nor do you understand the time-sensitive nature of gender transition, before your body locks in your hormones, your neuroplasticity - everything.

Secondly, and more relevant to the current topic: look at how the same people treat poverty as a personal sin, and blue-collar workers as inherently inferior and worthy of less respect than some snake oil salesman they idolize as a genius who tells them what they want to hear. What they're doing to trans people is infantilising them as an excuse to take their rights away and dressing it up as concern.

Before, it was to "protect the children". A bunch of droolers went "WhAt iF pUbErTy bLoCkErS ArE bAd FoR yOu???" despite decades of research and practical application having extremely few side effects at all for anyone. But the tide turned because of concern, concern, concern, all boiled over by the right wing. You can't trust these self-mutilating queers, we have concerns about the medical science that's been around for over fifty years!

At least when they were fixated on transgender teens who wanted to pause their puberty, undertake therapy and potentially medically transition when they were legally allowed to - or simply stop taking the blockers and undergo puberty normally if they decided they were happy with their assigned gender - they could hide under that snivelling catchphrase of theirs, "protect the children!".

What fucking justification do you have for denying that care for people who are physically and legally adults?

Why can you be legally allowed to smoke, drink, vote and serve in the military, but not be of sound mind to make a decision to transition genders?

Again, it's coaching gender affirming care in the language of the deranged. It's framing it as self-harm being attempted by people whoa re too young to understand it, who have to be protected from it until they're old enough to know better.

But the cut-off date for that is usually 21.

This is one step towards the age of consent for gender affirming care going higher and higher, until the hysterical right-wing "concern" over it being mutilation takes over and gets it banned outright.

We went from queer people being able to marry each other and self-determinate socially and legally, to queer and interracial marriage being under attack after Roe V. Wade and the self-determination of queer people being likened to mutilation, in the span of six years.

The hate was definitely overblown, even if their lyrics were vapid and the songs were a bit formulaic. Flaws and all, as far as like Top 40 music and radio rock went? I think they were the gold standard compared to the swamp of post-grunge that swept in around the same time.

I'm not talking about indie acts or other music with more substance or bite, because a small local act like the Weakerthans were never going to court the same worldwide appeal as a radio rock behemoth with international #1's from wall to wall. I'm also not talking about "authenticity". I'm talking about acceptable, parsable chart filler that's held up the same way a styrofoam cup from 50 years ago has. I wouldn't go out of my way to interact with it, but there's a place in the world for music like that.

It's structured, cleanly produced music that distracts you for long enough that you can go about your business, like any reasonably well-received pop cut. It's clean-cut corporate radio rock for the charts and the lyrics tend to be fairly shallow, but it's perfectly competent pop music and I don't think we can really go out of our way to call it the worst thing ever any more.

We've heard the Island Boys, we've heard Yummy by Justin Bieber. They've arguably got more teeth on them than Coldplay at this point. Nickelback has aged pretty well in comparison, and imo has mostly been a pretty consistent, competent outfit. Their main error was trying to come across as "authentic" with Voice of a Revolution, when they were getting by just fine doing what they were doing.

It's chart filler, but it's competent chart filler. To that end, I do think the hate was overblown.
