On a somewhat related note, Para recently helped me out with co-writing for a pretty big project! Like a real life project with a budget of thousands of dollars, not just a thing for board 8. Will probably share it on here soon! Para may have imposter syndrome but I knew I could count on her to write great stuff, I'm sure anyone who read this whole list would agree.

I played Chicory in preparation for this writeup so I could read it without spoiling anything, and I can confirm it is indeed a very good game! With a great soundtrack that I'm still listening to a few weeks later. (Funnily enough I was worried I might not finish the game in time since I only started it a few days after the #2 writeup lol)

yeah there's useful QoL stuff. you can live without most of it but it's pretty nice. the biggest thing is, if you're not on the west coast and your ping is too slow to let you weave in between machinist or RDM's 1.5 second skills, there's a plugin that lets you do that. it makes it so that you have ping like if you lived right next to the servers.

other useful stuff is showing debuff timers on the party list, a plugin that shows you every second of a countdown instead of just 15 10 and <5 (useful for savage when your opener requires things at a specific time), uhhh... a plugin that stops asking you "Are you sure?" every time you desynth an item or create a materia or just anything. Off the top of my head. There's other neat stuff. Most of it you can live without it though, but also it's not very hard to set up.

Oh the big thing is it all comes through the QuickLauncher app, which lets you just click it and the game immediately opens without you having to enter your username/password every time

it was very tight. my group had multiple <1% enrages and the only thing that really changed between that and the clear was getting a lucky run with more crits. our WAR switched to DRK for the final fight but our PLD stayed PLD. BRD switched to DNC as well - DNC isn't technically above BRD by that much in a vacuum, but the value of dance partnering the one melee with an augmented tomestone weapon was too good.

that idea, on paper, would make them the same as most other jobs, and work mechanically

but thematically i think it's a bit odd, and SE does care about the job fantasy in cases like that. it's weird if you just have cards without drawing them. drawing a card is part of the whole fortune telling thing. you don't go see a fortune teller and there's 3 cards already on the table.

edit: oh just the seals? ...eh that's also weird. you get seals by playing cards. but i mean, sure, maybe. it wouldn't feel right. starting with stacks of a resource like addersgall or a gauge makes sense. having seals would still "feel" odd.

yeah i mean if you're into this sort of game you have... phoenix wright, zero escape, and danganronpa. PW is once every few years at this point, zero escape and danganronpa did 3 games and then ended. you've got a couple similar things with like Ghost Trick, Somnium, and... idk i can't even think of any others. i don't exactly feel this is a "there's just too many of them i'm tired of it" genre. It's like, the opposite, if you like this genre you just have to take what you get which is usually 1 game every year or two lol

uhhhh. that's a tough one.

firstly, they don't look like villains. the one standing up maybe, but the one sitting looks very kind. so i'm confused.

i don't know what "self-saving" means, but the first thought my brain had was like. they're in a forest, so... saving... the environment? the sitting one is holding a jar which could be medicine? maybe they are saving themselves, living sustainably in a forest...?

but they don't look like villains, so maybe it's like, two people who were branded as villains and had to escape and now live as nomads or whatever...? saving themselves...?

the vibe is that this is a sweet story about a young kid who gets mentored by a wise adult.

i have no clue. hope this helps. lol

And yeah that's the main reason I am going AST, I am a Scholar(/Sage) and I am just used to the more oGCD-based nature, White Mage does not come as naturally to me even if it is "easier", plus AST has a mitigation bubble which I'm also used to.

The Minor Arcana change is the really bad one. There's threads on the official forums now complaining about it too so hopefully SE listens.

I genuinely think no one on their job design team plays AST, and if they do, they did not test this change.

Even if you're not at a high level, it makes total sense that you might draw a Lady of Crowns and wait until a good opportunity to use it, and then have no idea when the 60 second cooldown of Minor Arcana is ready again.

yeah i def preferred the ShB minor arcana from the bit i played. just a tiny bit of decision-making, "do i want this card or can i burn it on damage and draw a better seal before next div is needed?" but i didn't play AST at high level then so i could be missing some intricacies.

some ASTs now actually dislike this redraw change, because it makes it harder to redraw a ranged card into a melee card. i think they prefer melee cards even over getting the 3rd seal, because the third seal only adds 5% to your damage, but a melee in burst does (i imagine) more than 5% more than a bard/dancer, maybe even more than the other ranged?

so before, if you redrew a ranged card, you had a 3/5 chance of getting a melee, because you could draw the melee version of the same seal. now you can't, so it's only a 2/4 chance.

...very high level optimization stuff, but still.

but if they made a system like that in this day and age, they'd need to make the effects a lot better. MP restore should restore a *significant* chunk. mitigation should be party-wide at least so if there's *any* raidwide in the next 30 seconds you can get value. change the TP thing to a 5-second party-wide expedient. just spitballing. this would of course need to remove the 2nd charge of draw since you would want to actually have 30 seconds to use these at a good time, not spam them during burst like you do now.

but yeah, it's hard to make it work. but still i'd rather they try to do something interesting. i totally understand why ASTs who started in HW because they wanted a buff/utility/support class are annoyed it's been streamlined into "its just damage buffs" meta.

meh, it also "feels" bad when your big attacks don't crit, or when you don't get a proc on dancer/bard, or etc etc. ideally you have it even out over the course of a long fight.

but new AST already has feel-bad moments when you draw the wrong minor arcana, or when you don't hit 3 seals despite your best efforts. (which they've mitigated somewhat now. but it did feel bad, even if over the course of a fight it evens out, so you're not wrong)

Oh I'm aware the old system had issues. I just think the concept as a whole is more interesting than just "they're all the balance"

I'd tweak it to make the effects actually worthwhile. I'd also remove the redraw that made people just fish for balance, though I don't know exactly how it worked. I'd make it so you just have to work with what you get and give it to the best person.

But even then, yeah, this game's battle system has become consistently streamlined around DPS being the only thing that matters, with MP management, aggro management, anything else really, falling by the wayside. And of course, totally scripted at all moments in a fight, so you don't want or need any variation anyway. So the old system doesn't make much sense. The new one doesn't feel satisfying either though.

As someone who only started in ShB and only picked up AST for real in EW (I mean I had it at 80 in ShB but used it at 80 maybe twice total) I completely agree with all the "revert to Heavensward/Stormblood" ASTs.

I feel like an inauthentic AST because I never played back when all 6 cards actually did unique things.

Honestly it sounds way more interesting than just 6 differently coloured damage buffs.

obviously this only matters if you're going for an optimized speedrun/parserun or clearing week 1. i don't think many in this thread (who play AST) will particularly care. it's a change that's better for like 90% of the playerbase.

i'm really annoyed at the minor arcana/crown play change.

the two main reasons are a) it doesn't show the cooldown timer anymore while you have the card drawn. but optimal AST play means saving the card you draw at 1:00 to use in the 2:00 burst window, so you can't see the cooldown at all now until it's up again basically. i used that cooldown to track where i am in my rotation so it's annoying for it to be gone.

b) you can't double-weave crown play into minor arcana draw anymore, since the game forces a second-long wait for the skill to change. it forces it the other way too, which matters less, but i do sometimes draw and play immediately when i don't care which card it is.

oh and c) if i draw a lady at 1:00, i might be saving it in case i need it. if, at 2:00, i realize i haven't needed it at all, i can just press minor arcana to draw a new card. but now i'll have to spend the lady first, using up a weave slot in the leadup to burst. again, minor thing, but yeah it's all just annoying.

There's unlikely to be many parties doing P1-4S anymore now that they're outdated. People will still be farming all the extremes though to get the rare mounts that drop, but the first 2 are outgeared at this point so that either makes them a good entry point, or not a realistic representation of a current fight, depending on your outlook. EX3 is probably still at a fair level right now. EX4 and P5S are both perfectly fine starting points though, just make a party labeled [Fresh]/[Learning], you can even say "It's my first time raiding", people usually join those and are happy to help.

though speaking of which, we had to kick our dragoon (long history of being unreliable, and showing up 20 minutes late to one of our DSR reclears last week was the final straw) and our plans to find another melee are apparently falling through.

if anyone knows anyone on NA that thinks they can handle a week 1 clear let me know. ideally a melee but can take any role if needed.

i forgot to mention this but i got my DSR clear a couple weeks ago. (as dancer)

I think it was day 47, 3 hours a night, 3 nights a week, eventually added a 4th day. so about 140 hours total.

i'm going AST for the next tier, it'll be my first time healing in week 1 savage so i'm pretty nervous, i usually play SCH/SGE in party finder savage/ex but my static needed the regen healer slot filled so i had to pick either WHM or AST. i think there's a chance it goes totally fine but also a chance that i get overwhelmed, i've only ever done a 3rd/4th fight in PF as healer once people had gear, never on week 1. i don't wanna fuck up and hold back the group, or god forbid, be the reason we miss the week 1 clear. but we'll see.

The problem with the Nobody meme is that the template is completely pointless. You preface your punchline with the word "nobody" and then post the punchline on the next line. You could just... post the punchline as the joke. There is no sort of joke that actually requires the first line in order to set up. It's entirely used as a method to post one-liners in a format that needlessly takes up multiple lines.

uhhhh that sounds like people just using it wrong?

it's supposed to be for when people say things completely unprompted

like "nobody: ............... vegans: i'm vegan btw"

but people have bastardized it and just used it as a leadup to literally anything, like "nobody: ..... someone: *something totally random*"
