Virginity and holiness just go together in Judaic, Christian and Islamic outlook (it seems to hold in Inca and Aztec too.) The bride has to be holy, has to be virginal. The bride's age is not in the Qur'an. The bride's age is passed down in oral traditions and each sect selected its oral traditions. It is just easier to have the virginity issue beyond a doubt and to just wave your hands over the robbing the cradle issue than the other way around.
