Sporadic appearances turning into a regularly scheduled improvement.
Are we getting a S4 as I don't know how much S3 covers. That and seems like in JP the movie was the real gateway to mainstream recognition.
But Chihayafuru kinda plays up something that's very noticeable in manga and anime.
You can have just about any game and build a good story around it through the tension of the game, the human drama or combination of both.
We've seen card games series, Hikaru no Go, various mahjong shows and so forth be quite successful with the premise.
I don't think I can name many comic series that have been able to keep readers/viewers engaged for years around something like this.
Though I assume there's webcomics about friends playing a long DnD session that have a massive fanbase.

Former finalist, IIRC it took until people watched S2 for it to really blow past OPM in terms of B8 popularity.
Though at this point I think the Mob anime is a bigger deal outright as well.
Easy to see why! Endearing characters, good action and Bones handled the adaptation very well.
