What doesn't help is that Natasha is apparently undercover for most of the movie (haven't seen it), so she has little chance to display her real personality. Gah.

Would you agree with Scarlett Johansson that Black Widow felt more like a sex object in Iron Man 2 than well-realized character?

I meant more surprise that Batman is such a big IP in film which is derived from other source material, I was thinking there are more than only 9 live-action solo Batman films as a result.

I'm also consistently surprised at how popular the Burton Batman movies are, but thinking about it every Batman film continuity since 1997 has kind of just been reinventing the wheel.

And yet the only two billion-dollar hits since the start of the pandemic were both denied release in China. Funny that.

They're kind of developing their own industry and that does much to block Hollywood's reach there. Then again I first learned of that from Midnight's Edge of all outlets, but given how many of the biggest post-pandemic (as in the start of it anyway) hits are Chinese movies I'm inclined to think there's a grain of truth.

Also I get the feeling this is partly due to wanting to (re)introduce Keaton Batman in The Flash first, and with that in limbo people might be confused seeing Justice League's Commissioner Gordon with a different Batman?

More because with how big Batman is I was surprised on counting them it's still a single-digit number. Fair points raised in this thread though.

I've also seen the 1989 Batman, Batman Begins, and The Batman all within the past year and liked them all about equally. Found them all good without being blown away by any of them. Also it feels like the fight choreography gets better with every Batman movie lol.

Looked up to make sure, apparently one guy is wearing a shirt that says "Release the Snyder Cut" and another wears a shirt that says "The Last Jedi is Not Canon".

The only thing I know about the Harley Quinn cartoon is a scene where two "losers" are shown wearing T-shirts that say things like #ReleasetheSnyderCut and #DecanonizeTheLastJedi.

What stands out regarding Iron Man 1 to me is how the dialogue just seems to flow more naturally than usual for a Hollywood blockbuster, although it helped I knew basically the whole movie was ad-libbed ahead of time.

The one I remember offhand is how David Zaslav made it upfront that diversity is "not a priority" (fine), and then proceeded to hire all white men in high positions while canning one of the most powerful women in Hollywood (former WB CEO Ann Sarnoff). And then cancelling a bunch of shows and movies with non-white leads. Great optics.

The whole Discovery-Warner thing has honestly confused me since I thought Warner was under AT&T's ownership, but no it seems Discovery bought out WB from AT&T? Also I didn't even know about the buyout until I saw a video from guess what source?

"Nearly done" in this case means post-production.

The issue is that technically The Flash was delayed supposedly for post-production reasons. That's also the reason Top Gun: Maverick didn't make its originally planned 2019 release date.

Apparently that's the whole point. WB's new management simply doesn't have enough faith in a movie made directly for streaming with such a "big" budget. That plus tax write-off issues it seems.

Might also have to do with The Flash getting delayed since it seems like WB's plans for the DCEU are completely changing due to that movie's various troubles. Seeing how Ben Affleck is apparently replacing Michael Keaton as Batman for his cameo in Aquaman 2.

I feel dumb for not realizing earlier how people who complain about cancel culture tend to be fairly big practitioners of it.

If Fight Club isn't a box-office failure then Waterworld isn't either for the same reasons methinks.

Iron Man was my favorite MCU movie until No Way Home. However I have not fully seen Winter Soldier.

One of those cases where home media sales got it out of the red, the very definition of a cult classic.

Fight club made like 40M over it's budget. I wouldn't consider that a failure.

$37 million domestically on a $63 million budget, ouch. Movies typically have to make double their budget back at the worldwide box office to get in the green.

Yeah I made this topic because I realized how few movies I watch that aren't "mainstream". I've seen a total of five box-office failures over the past year, and three of them were recent tentpole films thrown to the pandemic (Tenet, Wonder Woman 1984, and Black Widow), and two are considered cinema classics (It's A Wonderful Life and Fight Club - and yes I did like both films a lot).

Got curious about this because of something I asked in another thread. My answer to this would be the original Blade Runner, and I'm not even entirely sure if that would make my personal top 10. I'm sure of what my favorite movie is and have a general idea of my top 5 BTW.

Yeah that's the one part of their frustration I agree with. Though half of my problem there is that Disney has historically generally produced less films than other big studios and with their purchase of Fox their monopolization of the entertainment industry just becomes more apparent.

In one of the other topics I noted issues I have with the stance filmmakers like Scorsese and Coppola take towards the MCU. To be honest I understand their frustration with the predominance of superhero movies at the box-office, heck I even share it. I just have a nagging feeling that other filmmakers more versed in "genre" fare like Richard Donner and John Carpenter would be more enamored with the success of the MCU. Honestly with Donner it's kind of guaranteed he would have given he directed the two most highly-regarded Superman films and his production company made the X-Men movies. I'll gladly say I think Lethal Weapon 1 & 2 are some of the best action movies ever made and the series is my go-to example of why many aspects of the MCU's "formula" have been around far longer than the MCU itself. Maybe it doesn't help the guy who wrote the first two went on to doctor Iron Man's script and then write and direct Iron Man 3.

Mostly I just have a problem with Scorsese and Coppola admitting they want to force audiences to watch what they deem "cinema". Mass audiences aren't usually rushing out to see movies about dysfunctional people and/or relationships like Punch-Drunk Love and Midsommar. Not that I mean any diss towards those movies, and anyway I loved the crap out of There Will Be Blood.

Adding to this, I would wager that more people in total played Goldeneye than any other N64 game due to its extremely popular multiplayer. By gaming standards it was a cultural phenomenon.

EDIT: Looking at the list of bestselling games on each list, I might actually have to give that honor to Mario Kart 64. Still definitely above MGS4 though.

Not entirely on-topic but I want to bring up how when watching Multiverse of Madness I wanted to joke about it being the best Dark Phoenix movie. I also felt the movie handled the "unstable powered woman" trope about as well as it could and was pleasantly surprised the climax didn't involve Strange beating the curse out of Wanda.

There's no way RE5 would do that now. It was barely a year old when that match happened.
