It can be argued both ways. People who expect us to do shit we never agreed to are in a way entitled. I say this as someone who works 71 hours a week.

I make the same argument for suicide. They say it's selfish but is it not selfish to insist someone lives just cause it will upset You?

Neither of those are really "entitlement". Entitlement is basically assuming you deserve things you never earned, or that your wants and needs somehow outweigh everyone else's because your perspective is somehow more valid than everyone else's.

Suicide basically is selfish, because you're saying that your suffering is the only thing that matters. Even more so if you're killing yourself because "I feel sad", as opposed to something more justifiable (terminal disease, crippling injury, etc).

As for never asking to be born, literally no one ever has - but the rest of the human race has just had to suck it up for the last hundred thousand years or so. The only reason any of us exist at all today is because all of those previous generations did their part to make the best out of a bad situation. So there's definitely a sense of exceptionalism at play if someone is trying to use it as an excuse for doing/not doing something.

This.

It's basically why credit card debt is such an endemic problem in the US - tons of people charge more than they can afford, and then spend years (or decades) essentially paying interest because they can't afford to pay off the principle debt.

And this is also why my credit card company hates me, because I never run a debt, and thus never pay interest.

Is that a billionaire would take his wife and son out to the theater without any armed bodyguards

When the story was originally written, it would have taken place in the 1920s. Much more believable then - at that point the President barely had armed bodyguards. Which is probably why they kept getting shot every 20 years or so.

Yeah, the more you keep pushing the origin forward the more ridiculous it becomes (at this point Bruce would have seen his parents getting shot in like the early 2000s at the earliest), but that's a problem with comics in general. Like how Captain America's suspended animation went from being originally 18 years to winding up nearly 65 years for the movies (radically altering just how alienated he was by the changes that took place in his absence). Or how The Punisher originally fought in Vietnam, but by this point they either have to retcon it forward to Iraq/Afghanistan or just never mention exactly which conflict he was fighting in.

Or, you know, the Fantastic Four taking a rushed test flight in an unproven rocket ship with insufficient shielding because they needed to "beat the Pinko Commie Ruskies to space". Or for that matter, Reed going on the mission at all (you don't send your top scientist on a potentially dangerous test flight), or being stupid enough to bring his young girlfriend and her teen little brother just for the fuck of it.

Sort of completely changing the origin from the ground up (which people would absolutely complain about nonstop), there really isn't much of a solution for these sorts of things.

let alone walking down crime alley, alone, at night.

The implication is usually that it wasn't called Crime Alley at the time. The shooting itself is part of what led people to call it that in the first place. Urban decay can turn previously safe neighborhoods into crime-infested hellholes (and gentrification can do the reverse). Though again, it depends on which version of the story you're reading/watching/playing/etc.

It's sort of like how Daredevil is from Hell's Kitchen. Real life Hell's Kitchen didn't turn to absolute shit until after the Civil War, and it's been gentrifying since the mid-1980s. So while setting Daredevil as a character there growing up in a tough Irish slum made sense in the early 1960s, it wouldn't really have made much sense in 1860, nor would it make sense now.

Same deal with Ben Grimm/The Thing in the gentrification sense - the part of NYC he's supposed to be from was a rough neighborhood in the early 20th century (when he would have grown up there), but it would make absolutely no sense for him to come from there now and still have the same sort of childhood. The Yancy Street Gang is based on the Bowery Boys films from the 40s - and a Ben Grimm in a modern retelling of the story would have grown up in the late 90s/early 00s, when a gang like that literally would not exist there.

Iirc there was a plot line once where Bruce came out and said he was funding batman but wasn't batman. I feel they shoulda stuck with that.

Nah - like most of the ideas Grant Morrison introduced, it was kind of stupid.

Realistically, the moment Bruce announces that he's been funding Batman for years, he instantly becomes legally culpable for everything Batman has ever done, and Bruce gets sued straight into poverty.

Sure, it makes more sense ("Of course a rich kid who watched his parents get killed by a criminal is going to be gung ho on supporting a vigilante crime fighter!"), and helps obscure the connections between the two (why suspect that Bruce is Batman if everyone already "knows" that Bruce just works with Batman?). But it doesn't really work once you think about it for more than a few seconds.

It's the same problem Tony Stark had in the comics hiding his identity as Iron Man - he actually had to create multiple false identities for his "bodyguard" over the years when he did something shady and the government wanted to arrest (or kill) Iron Man. If the government knew that it was Tony in the suit from the very beginning, he'd have been in jail for like 40+ years now. And he still has to fend off lawsuits from criminals and rival businessmen related to Iron Man's activities.

And to deliberately troll/clickbait people into paying attention to comic books again (not that that ever seems to work for Marvel when they do it).

That being said, yes, most actual comic fans didn't care, because we all knew it was just another cosmic retcon that would probably be undone in a few months anyway (which it was), because that kind of parallel universe history-altering shit happens every 20 minutes or so in the Marvel universe.

This is definitely not the case. They were pretty regularly appearing in each others books as well as being team members pretty often

This isn't really true.

Falcon's mostly a similar case to Pepper in Iron Man. Not really around for decades, but once the movies reintroduced her, the comics rushed to bring her back, no matter how stupid the justification for it was, or how little sense it made in the comic continuity.

Marvel's logic for years has been "The movies have millions of viewers, the comics only sell a hundred thousand copies or so, so fuck continuity or cohesive storytelling, we'll just copy ideas from the movies regardless of whether or not they work." Same reason why the comics put the X-Men into black leather outfits (that looked like shit) after the X-Men films, and why they gave Spider-Man organic web shooters (in the stupidest way possible) after the Spider-Man films.

Falcon was a major character in Captain America comics in the 70s. For most of the 80s, 90s, and 2000s, he was barely a supporting character who showed up once every few years or so (he arguably spent about as much time hanging around with Power Man/Iron Fist or other heroes as he did Cap). It wasn't until he was introduced in the Winter Soldier film that they started pushing him hard again in the 2010s.

Meanwhile, Ed Brubaker brought Bucky back in 2004, and he was a major character for years. And actually spent a few years as Captain America back in the late 00s. Same sort of deal with Sharon Carter - they'd killed her off in the late 70s, but she was brought back in the mid-90s and became a semi-regular supporting character. Both of them were more of a presence and impact on Cap's life for the last few decades than Falcon ever was. Hell, Nomad was more of a presence in Cap's life until Bucky killed him in his reintroduction (which makes sense, because Nomad's entire concept was that he was basically a tragic failed modern Bucky who became bitter and cynical).

(In the late 80s/early 90s, fucking D-Man was more likely to appear in any Cap comic than Falcon was.)

And that's not even getting into other characters Cap was close to who could potentially fill the role (and the argument that they shouldn't constantly be trying to fill the role anyway, because it never seems to work out all that well for anyone other than Steve Rogers).

Falcon got the role because he was Cap's main black friend at a time when they were trying to diversity major characters. With the added bonus that he had newfound visibility because of his appearance in the MCU. That's pretty much it. About the best I can say for the run is that it wasn't quite as out of left field as Jane getting the power of Thor, and it wasn't as poorly handled as Jane getting the power of Thor, but that's a very low bar.

Marvel's been kind of shit across the board since the 2011 soft reboot. And while the consistency of the shit has varied from time-to-time and from title-to-title, there really isn't much good coming out of the "House of Ideas" lately. Which is a shame, because they were having a clear renaissance in the 2000s after the dark age of the 1990s.

How was Falcon Captain America a "Hamfisted choice" though? He deserved the title more than Bucky did.

In the comics?

Cap and Falcon hadn't really been a close team since the 70s. And not only was Bucky always sort of portrayed as the one sidekick Cap was always really close to (to the point where it kind of colored his relationship with Nomad in the 80s), but after they brought Bucky back as the Winter Soldier he'd become strongly tied to Cap in a lot of stories. It seemed almost a given that Bucky would become the new Cap if Cap retired/died/etc (even to the point where he was literally Cap for a while after Civil War), and going "lol no, Falcon's his true successor" felt awkward as fuck and blatantly forced.

If anything, there were multiple other characters in the comics that felt like they had way more claim to the legacy of Captain America than Falcon ever did (and keeping in mind, Falcon already has a long and established identity of his own), so it comes across as feeling more like Marvel going "Okay, we need a diverse character to fill this slot", and then just grabbing Cap's only real black friend and quickly trying to establish him as the One True Successor than it ever felt like anything that grew organically out of the actual stories being told.

In the movies/shows? There's maybe more of an argument in favor of Falcon because Bucky's a bit crazy/has a criminal record and Falcon is one of Steve's few good friends in the present, but even that's a bit weak because Falcon was rarely presented as being that good a friend - if anything, he and Cap are almost presented like casual friends while the first two Captain America films paint Bucky as being even more of Cap's bestest friend ever than the comics ever did.

If anything, as presented in the films/shows Sharon might have had more claim to the role/shield (at least until they arbitrarily turned her into a villain for no good reason).

maybe because Thor isn't a title, like Green Lantern....

That was the biggest problem with the comic storyline, IMO. It wasn't that they'd made a woman Thor. It was the piss-poor writing and blatant virtue signaling.

They'd done stories where Thor lost his hammer and someone else gained "The Power of Thor" before, and people never flipped their shit over it. But when you write a story where Thor stops being "worthy" (without actually bothering to explain what he supposedly did wrong), so you could give the hammer to Jane Foster instead (who hasn't really been a major character in the Thor comics for nearly 50 years), then have Thor literally stop calling himself Thor (as if it was a title and not, you know, his fucking name), it's going to piss people off. And when your response to people complaining is to make a bad shoehorned "ethics in hammer wielding" joke in the comic itself, your motives and intentions are kind of blatantly clear.

It also didn't help that it happened at a time when Marvel was deep-sixing a lot of major characters one after the other so they could pander to Twitter in the desperate hope that someone would actually buy comic books again (spoiler: it didn't work). So it became obvious that it wasn't a case of someone at Marvel coming up with a good story they wanted to tell, as much as because there was a mandate to diversify as quickly as possible, which led to it mostly being a sloppy and poorly-written mess.

(It's kind of telling that the only "diversity characters" they've come up with over the last 20 years or so that actually kind of succeeded are the ones that didn't shit all over existing characters to justify their existence. People liked Miles Morales and Kamala Khan were extremely popular - even with cis white male fans. It was the hamfisted replacements like Jane Thor or Falcon Captain America or black teenage girl Iron Man that annoyed people.

Hell, the X-Men have been flooded with strong female characters and ethnic diversity for decades and it made them the most popular franchise Marvel had for nearly 40 years. Comic fans aren't automatically opposed to diversity when it's actually written well.)

When it comes to the Thor movie, I think the biggest problem is that they've kind of made Thor a joke (something a number of people have already complained about), while Natalie Portman already comes across like she doesn't actually want to be in the movies. So it feels like there's a good chance the film is going to be terrible. Doubly so if they actually use the comic story for the script.

My first memory used to be trying to escape a playpen and crawling around on the floor of my original house, which I moved out of when I was 2. So my first memory was somewhere around 1-2 years old.

But as you get older, older memories start to fade, and all that you're really left with are memories of your memories. In other words, I can still remember that I used to remember that, but I can't actually remember it itself now. I mostly just remember me telling the story (like I am now).

This is one of the ways that liars come to believe their own lies - if you tell the lie often enough, you remember the lie but can forget the original truth. So stories and memories can slowly change over time as we accidentally edit our memories in our own brain. This is also how some people will "remember" things that they've been repeatedly told happened - they don't actually remember it, they remember other people telling them the story, and their brain sort of fills in the gaps (ie, if enough people tell you that you smashed your face into your birthday cake on your 2nd birthday, you might start "remembering" that you did it, even if you don't actually remember that you did it).

At this point in my life I'm not actually sure what my oldest real memory is. A lot of my childhood memories just feel like echoes and summaries of what happened rather than actual vivid memories of the moments themselves. But most of the little stories and anecdotes I tend to tell come from around 4-5 at the earliest because that's around the time most of my stories became coherent enough to repeat and reinforce over time.

I know I've definitely forgotten tons of things over time, because I can remember where the holes are. Like how when I was younger I used to be able to name every single kid in my class pictures, or name every teacher I ever had in school, but now I can't. Generally, if you don't reinforce memories over time through use, they fade.

It's because Columbus thought he found India or some shit

Ehh. There's some debate about this. Some people assume he believed that (or more precisely, believed that he'd found new islands not that far from the coast of Japan), and that it was essentially an outgrowth of his initial mistake (namely, miscalculating the size of the Earth and steadfastly refusing to accept the truth when pretty much everyone else he ever met told him he was wrong - he basically blundered into the "New World" by total accident). So he used terminology that reflected his belief that the Americas were basically just islands not that far off from India and China.

Others assume that insistent about the terminology because he'd realized he'd fucked up at some point - and was desperately trying to cover his own ass by pretending he hadn't. Which would also explain why he kept calling the odd little spicy plants he found "peppers", in spite of the fact that they neither looked nor tasted like actual pepper did. Basically, pepper was a spice that came from the Indies, therefore, he needed to explain why none of the plants he found looked anything that was actually found in Asia. His answer being that things like pepper looked different in the wild and when harvested fresh than they did after being processed and shipped over vast differences (which is kind of obvious bullshit in this case).

Basically, it depends on whether or not you think Columbus was a delusional weirdo or a deliberately manipulative liar. There's evidence for both opinions.

Most? Ehh... not for the last three years or so.

Unless you mean the Thor movies specifically, in which case they only have a 66%-33% success rate depending on who you ask. So maybe still no.

Pretty much, except instead of going west he canonically went up.

So did Gandalf.

After the end of the Second Age and the Bending of the World, "going West" doesn't mean literally going west, as much as you follow "The Straight Road" sort of upward, over, and into another dimension. At least part of the trip is described as traveling through the air as if on an invisible bridge.

It's why people sailing west from Britain eventually just hit North America and not magical heaven land. To sail West is an entirely different thing.

Or to translate Tolkien's mythos into "real world" speak, the world used to be flat and Heaven used to be a place on Earth (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NOGEyBeoBGM), but then the men of Atlantis fucked everything up so God turned the world into a globe and hid Heaven in another dimension. So to get to Heaven you basically have to magically sail into outer space.

Maybe it's actually an alternate universe.

Like, the series finale ends with a parallel universe cybernetic Walter White stepping out of a glowing time portal, having traveled back to set right what once broke bad.

I got the Medium-Destroy ending... although in all fairness I think the Refuse ending might be the "good" ending. Yes, this galaxy is destroyed by the reapers but all future cycles end with free will for everyone intact

Nah. Destroy is better. Because you preserve this cycle without dooming the future galactic civilization to have to potentially fight their own desperate war with tons and tons of casualties before eventually winning. On top of preventing literally everyone you've ever known and every current culture being wiped out. And being able to survive yourself (the only ending where that's possible) if you got the best version of Destroy.

Plus, it makes your surrogate father figure Anderson happy. So it's clearly the best ending.

Lokarin posted...
No idea why I got the Medium ending since I had like 6700 military strength... I think there could be one or two artifacts I missed and that's about it.

You had 6700 military strength, but you need 7400 for the best ending (I'm assuming you're playing Legendary Edition). And you missed a lot more than one or two artifacts - there's something like 7500 war asset points in the main game, but the DLC adds up to 1100 or so more (depending on which ones you're willing to play).

The whole thing is an absolute mess because one of the major stupid decisions they made when developing the game (probably forced on them by EA) was essentially forcing players to play multiplayer, by linking "Galactic Readiness" to your military strength in the single-player game. Default Galactic Readiness is 50% - which means only half of the war assets you collect actually count as "Effective Military Strength" (which is the score that technically matters). In the original version of the game it was literally impossible to get the best ending (because you needed 4000 EMS, but there was only 7500 possible war assets available, so you literally couldn't have an EMS higher than 3750 without playing multiplayer).

The Extended Cut of the original game helped (it lowered the requirement for best ending down to 3100 EMS), and the extra war assets in the DLC could help you pass the threshold sooner, but it was mostly a jury-rigged solution, when what they should have done is just remove Galactic Readiness entirely. Because it was stupid in the first place and almost no one wanted it.

The Legendary Edition continues the half-assed jury-rig fixing of the problem by doing away with "Galactic Readiness" (because there's no multiplayer anymore) and removing EMS from the game (because there's no Galactic Readiness to base it on), but also rebalancing all of the ending thresholds (with the best ending requiring 7400 - which essentially would have been an EMS of 3700 in the original version of the game). So they've made it harder to get again for no good reason, likely based on the assumption that players will deliberately play ALL the DLC. Which sort of defeats the entire purpose of the DLC being fun extra content and instead forcing you to play it.

BioWare's basically a shit company now, and every decision they make at this point is generally wrong.

If anything, Marvel Thor has always been waaaaay more mellow than actual Thor.

Ironically, Marvel Thor is more like mythological Hercules, while Marvel Hercules is kind of more like mythological Thor.

almost agree, but I'm pretty sure that "fruit" meaning "(plant) offspring" is a lot older than "fruit" meaning "sweet plant" (if "fruit" has ever meant that...).

It's not.. The English word traces back through Latin, and in Latin it basically meant "something satisfying".

Vegetable, on the other hand, comes from "something that grows".

Basically, "cooking and eating food" existed as a concept looong before the science of botany. And that's generally reflected in language. And the original differentiation between fruit and vegetable was originally mostly just separating the sweet and enjoyable edible plants from the ones that were edible and sustaining still but not quite as delicious.

Thats fine. Its what I signed up for but keep in mind that it wasnt like this before. So Im paying more for less.

You've just described most media content providers.

And most producers in general these days.

HornedLion posted...
Blatant greed, and I called it the moment people kept dumping Cable for OTT(over the top) services. I said, Theyre cheap now but as soon as the majority of people jump on them theyll increase the prices. Now, if you have all the OTT services youre paying more than if you just got cable.

I don't think it was inevitable as a consequence of people switching away from cable, but it was definitely inevitable once multiple streaming services entered the marketplace. Because content gets spread out across different platforms, forcing you to either pay for multiple services or settle for a single service that has less worthwhile content than it used to.

People's FOMO plays a huge role in why media companies do what they do. Because you're essentially complaining about an unnecessary luxury good that you in no way need to pay for in the first place. But people's desire to see all the popular shows means it's become commonplace to pay for multiple streaming services (and thus pay much more per month).

My assumption has always been (and continues to be) that cable will eventually evolve into a distribution platform for streaming services - so, in essence, you pay for Comcast or Optimum and it automatically gives you access to the Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, etc services with a unified GUI/menu system to simplify things. Because the way the ecosystem is evolving it seems unlikely any one service is going to be able to survive on its own long-term.

HornedLion posted...
Anyway, Im thinking about just restarting my HBO MAX subscription and cancelling Netflix.

You're going to experience the exact same issue there eventually.

It might be better for you in the short-term (especially if HBO/Warner has more shows you want to watch than Netflix does), but they're not inherently or objectively better than any other streaming service.

HornedLion posted...
And so is the general population. We keep getting fucked by these companies and people just take it.

As long as you're essentially just demanding access to something completely optional and unnecessary to life, this is never going to change.

People love to complain about capitalism and imply it's the root of every modern problem, but they also tend to ignore the fact that it's the only reason many of these services only exist in the first place. Profit is the only real motivation to create and distribute hundreds of channels worth of content (or massive streaming libraries). Entertainment media is a luxury, and the luxury market is fueled by profit (and exploitation).

The answer isn't to just demand that everyone else give you everything you want the way you want it (because that just makes you an entitled shit). The answer is to have principles and to reject things you object to. Even if that means refusing to support a service (and losing all access to its content).

Most people refuse to give things up though. Which is why people usually either just shrug and keep paying, or just switch to piracy of some kind.

From a culinary standpoint, that is.

So many of the things we call "vegetables" are actually fruits. People assume the debate is just centered around tomatoes, but that's not the case. Peppers, avocados, cucumbers, olives, CORN!??

From a culinary standpoint, the point of differentiating is because fruits and vegetables have different flavor profiles and tend to be cooked in different ways as different parts of a meal.

From a strict scientific standpoint, the differentiation between the two helps you understand how the plant grows and why it grows the way it does.

So a scientist will say that a tomato is a fruit because of how it grows and its function in plant reproduction, but a cook will say it's a vegetable because of how it tastes, how you eat it, and what sort of dishes you cook with it - and which definition is more useful depends on why you're asking the question.

If anything, the real problem is that science chose to use terminology that already had thousands of years worth of established assumptions and expectations that ran counter to the scientific nature of things, so if anything, science is the one that's wrong.

So fuck you, a tomato's a vegetable.
